People coming at you rom every direction, so many

aces and so many names - here comes a short in-troduction to some o the people behind this session.

    Organisers

When you come to an EYP session the rst groupyou meet are the Organisers. This weekend, youwill be served by thirteen very dedicated Organis-ers led by the two beautiful Head Organisers MsKatarina Warg and Ms Paula Kjelln. The Organ-isers are the ones it all starts from - they haveplanned the structure of the session. They are al-ways one, two, three steps ahead and ensure thatall activites run smoothly. They have set us up witheverything from the coffee served at coffee breaks

to the astonishing venues we are going to visit. As the Organisers tend to be very busy keeping thesession going according to plan, it will be dif cultfor them to be spend time with you. Do make sure

to be nice to them they are working so hard, andall for you.

    Journalists

A second group at this session is the team of Jour-nalists. Have you noticed people grinning widely, possibly almost to the extent of scariness, and

taking pictures of you doing embarrassing thingsduring teambuilding? They were most de nitely

the session Journalists. They are here to capture

the memories of the session and produce articlesfor the magazine, StockUp. Their objective is tocontribute to a positive session atmosphere andkeep everyone energised despite the lack of sleep. Each committee has their very own Journalist - butalways make sure to pose for anyone taking pic-

tures and you might end up becoming a sessioncelebrity.

    Chairs

The Chairs Team is the third and nal group of of -cials at a session, and probably the one that you

will spend the most time with. The Chairs Team isled by the sessions erce but lovable president,Mr Martins Dambergs. Chairs are the leadersof the committees. Most committees have twoChairs. Their task is to help you to get to knowone another through teambuilding, and later onfacilitate the intense discussions that you will haveon your topic during committee work. The Chairsare a source of nearly endless knowledge makegood use of them.

We have all had our frstday at an EYP session.

It has already been over 3 years since my rstEYP session, but I still remember the feeling of being surrounded by new enthusiastic faces andcustoms that seemed silly at rst, but served theirpurpose in the end. Riding a big fat pony or danc-ing like Michael Jackson are just a few things thatI learned that day. I felt a bit embarrassed andscared to share that many personal facts with aroom full of strangers. But then the magic hap-pened, the magic of building a functional team

that works together for one noble purpose towrite and present a resolution. Or so I thought.

Teambuilding was so much more than just forming a team for discussing political problems together,it was about getting the courage and motivation

to expect more from yourself. Hearing the dreamsand interests of young people like myself mademe feel extremely inspired to take up new chal-lenges and aim higher. Now I have been hookedfor 3 years but the magic of the rst teambuilding is still going strong for me and I hope you will get aglimpse of it as well.

    Triin

My rst encounter with EYP was nearly two yearsago. It all happened quite unexpectedly I went

to school on Monday to nd out that there is someevent going on in three days in my city and I wasgiven a chance to participate in it. Three dayslater I was standing in front of a youth hostel I hadnever heard of before and wondering whether Ishould enter the door or just turn my back and gohome instead. I really did not know what to ex-pect. I did not even know what it was exactly that Iwas going to participate in. But, I decided to go. At

rst it was a little overwhelming all those peoplerunning around and speaking in English to eachother. It got even worse when arrived to the venuewhere we were divided into groups and asked toplay some crazy games. Instead of focusing onwhat was going on around I was just trying not tobump into any of my local friends.

But at some point everything changed for amoment I forgot where we were and started toenjoy myself. I did not feel lost anymore. And so,step by step, I started to explore EYP. By the endof the day I was more than glad that I had decided

to come. By the end of the session I realized howmuch I had gained - fun, excitement and knowl-edge. This day was a tough beginning of a greatadventure - an adventure I intend to follow as long as possible.

First of all, in order to be able to discuss serious topics it is essential for a team to get to know andfeel comfortable around one another. Obviously,it is not easy to go from perfect strangers to nearbest friends. Therefore, teambuilding is hard workand generally requires you to run, jump, sing anddo lots of other things you would normally con-sider pretty strange. Guess what? In the European

Youth Parliament, these things are pretty normal. The fact that theyre maybe a bit odd will not onlybe a huge amount of fun, but also ensure that youare comfortable with your fellow committee mem-

bers and are able to speak your minds once theCommittee Work starts.

Teambuilding is about breaking the ice. Learn-ing names and getting to know general informa-

tion about one another, such as little secrets andhobbies, will play a prominent part at this stage.Secondly, teambuilding is about building andimproving the group dynamics through all differentkinds of problem solving games that stress theimportance of different group interactions such ascommunication and trust.

Almost every session adheres to the same structure o threemain components. These three elements will fll the coming days

o your busy Delegate lives, namely:

Committee Work is the part of discussing an as-signed current topic of political interest within theCommittee. It is on one hand about producing aresolution to solve the problem at hand, but at thesame time an opportunity to widen your horizon by

opening up to different ideas. Do not limit yourself during Committee Work by thinking about rightwing or left wing, socialist or capitalist, liberalistor conservative. In all situations there are multiplesolutions and limiting yourself to one speci c typeof reasoning will make you blind to the conversa-

    tions at hand.

Moreover, the European Youth Parliament doesnot worry about the matter of money. During Com-mittee Work it is solely important to come up withsolutions that are as a good as possible and willoptimize results, instead of thinking about the ra-

tio between nancial input and output of the plansproposed. Again, this would be a limiting factorand is therefore left out in the discussions dur-ing Committee Work and later on in the GeneralAssembly. In essence, Committee Work is aboutwidening your personal views by listening to thoseof others.

Last but not least we have General Assembly - the icing on the cake. During GA, each resolution

is debated in turn. Every Committee is allowed to explain and defend their own resolution. Thedebate is meant to be a productive and interac-

tive one similar to the one of Committee Work,in which people with different views guided bycommon goals try to nd solutions. Remember

that criticism is needed, but the way in which it isexpressed is essential to its success. Instead of

bashing a resolution, it is important to remember that the proposing Committee has put a lot of

thought and hard work into their resolution andconstructive criticism is therefore encouraged -

not only to carry the debate forward, but also outof respect for the proposing Committee. Finally,

the General Assembly is the perfect place to over-come the fear of public speaking and nd a love

for debating, so take your chance.

At your frst session, there are several things you need tokeep in mind. Just as any other association, EYP has its ownrules, both o fcial and uno fcial. This simple guide will ensurethat you stay out o trouble with the organisers.

Dos & DontsEnergize - There is nothing more important in asession than coffee breaks. You will notice thisby their quantity. Learn to appreciate and savour

them. If youre not a coffee-drinker yet - learn tolove it and this will bring you far within the EYP.

Facebook - If you do not have a Facebook accountyet - get one. Facebook is the unof cial meeting place of EYPers outside sessions, thus a crucialplace for keeping in touch and nding the mostembarrassing moments of the session in photo-graphs.

Say Thank you - especially to the Organisers. Youmight not always notice, but they work very hardfor you. One day you might be one yourself, but

that does not mean you have to wait until that day to appreciate the work the Organisers do.

Be late - there is nothing worse than people having to wait. If you, however, end up being late, do notbe surprised if the reaction is not lled with sun -shine and happiness.

Sleep in - See above, wake up calls are there toensure that you are not late there are no excus-es. Sleep is for after the session.

Disturb other guests - As you might have noticed, the hotel itself has many other guests. Make sure to respect them and their need for sleep.

Disappear and get lost - Do not wander off on yourown. The Organisers do not need the extra stressof searching for missing delegates.

Teambuilding:The dress code for Teambuilding is casual, ergo anything that youfeel comfortable in. Do, however, leave the sweatpants and ratherwear your jeans. Other than thatkeep in mind that you mighthave to run around outdoorsand do various exercises, whichmeans that heels and skirtsmight be rather uncomfortable.

Semi formal:During Committee Work you areasked to be dressed semi for-mal, which is half way betweeninformal and formal. This is arather exible dress code. Becomfortable but avoid trainersand t-shirts or jeans with holes- proper jeans are, however, ac-ceptable.

Why am I here? are the words echoing in yourmind as you manage to pull your luggage through

the sea of strangers and reach the hostels recep- tion. I could have spent the whole weekend in mycomfortable bed, you continue thinking as the

receptionist utters three unfamiliar names belong-ing to your roommates. Why? you ask yourself once again, What is this EYP really anyway? DearDelegate, luckily for you, I am here to help to ex-plain just that.

EYP was founded in 1988 by Just kidding. Anyway, the rst thing you should know about EYP is thatit is fun. Do not ever think that you have sacri cedyour time to come here for nothing. Reading this,

you have just nished Teambuilding, and hopefullyyou have had a good, although somewhat strange time. Ill inform you though, you have not even got- ten to the good stuff yet. Tomorrow, you will nd that there is no other feeling like realising that youridea actually could solve the unemployment crisisin Europe or save the environment. You will never

nd a place where you can learn as much without itfeeling like work. Speaking of producing ideas, you must know

that EYP is not your ordinary school debate club.Rather than constant quarrelling and trying to beatyour opponent, emphasis lies on cooperation andachieving consensus within your Committee. Thereis no opponent. This leaves more room for creating solutions and less room for you to be afraid to voiceyour opinion.

Moreover, as the name indicates, EYP is meant for the young. You are the youth - act natural, be your-

self. Just because you are discussing importantmatters, do not think that you are expected to bebig-shot politicians. Every fresh and unique ideayou put forth counts. And none is too stupid.

Lastly, although it will sound very cheesy, EYP isall about friendship. Meeting new people all the

time, you are bound to nd someone who you willget along with. Also, it is always a plus to add tensof more friends after each session on Facebook to

    show off with.

    ment, and, moreimportantly, what

are you doing here?Mehmet Can Burdu
