New Beginnings –

jfjf

Good times with a busy start to the school year

We welcomed our youngest students to the "Shark family" at a very successful Grade 8 Camp on September 13-15 at Camp Stillwood near Cultus Lake. The main purpose for our annual camp is to help our youngest students make a successful transition to high school. This year our 200 Grade 8s and 32 Camp Leaders went to Camp and our students learned about "being organized for success & setting goals"; “social responsibility”; “getting involved and leaving a legacy”, and participated in many fun activities. Most importantly, all the Grade 8s made new friends and began to come together as a group – a great start for the SLSS grads of 2022! Thank you to the staff who came to camp - Ms. S. O’Neill, Mr. T. Jarvis, Ms. H. Sullivan, Ms. B. Schneebeli, Ms. A. Wu, Ms. M. Henrickson, Ms. A. Levin, Ms. J. Girard, Ms. R. Lewin, Ms. I. Guidone, Mr. B. Hockley, Ms. A. Shearer, RCMP Cst. H. McKean, and Ms. A. Kwon. Congratulations to the student camp leaders who organized the 3-day event: Mark Cam, Jennifer Cen, Athena Chen, Jessalyn Chen, Joshua Chew, Andrea Chiang, Alex Chow, Ashwyn Dholliwar, Emily Fuchiwaki, Sophia Gu, Prem Gundarah, Bandan Jaswal, Parker Johnson, Eve Katayama, Kim Kerdsumran, Dylan Kobankiat, Kathleen Kong, Sara Lee, Harrison Liu, Emily Mu, Jonathan Nakhleh, Megan Saez Co, Yana San Pedro, Tianaa Sequeira, Marcus Su, Celine Tsai, Charles Van, Joshua Wang, Aaron Wee, Marco Wong, Justin Wu, and Catherine Xu. Thank you also to the 15 students who led an in-house camp at the school: Merveilles Amisi, Brian Ang, Isabelle Beggs, Otto Chen, Jessie Hsieh, Angela Hu, Ryan Huang, Bertina Lee, Cameron Lee, Michelle Li, Sharon Low, Jessie See-Fernandez, Lily Wang, Brandon Yuen, and Annie Zhou.

Cops for Cancer is an exciting annual event that takes place each fall, when over a hundred law enforcement and emergency services personnel from across the province brave all types of weather as they cycle up to two weeks across the daunting terrain of Vancouver Island, Northern BC, the coast of British Columbia and the Fraser Valley.

World Teachers’ Day Thursday, October 5th was World Teachers’ Day. The United Nations celebrates the role teachers play in providing quality education that enables children and adults of all ages to learn to take part in and contribute to their local community and global society. Thus teachers are global leaders and have earned an international day during which their efforts are recognized and applauded. At SLSS, we extended our appreciation to all staff as we know “it takes a village to raise a child”. Many thanks to the SLSS PAC for organizing breakfast for SLSS staff on Thursday, October 5. The items were plentiful and became snacks for the rest of the day.

SLSS Parent’s Corner – What’s new? Welcome! Stay Connected and Keep Informed and Get Involved!

PAC News – Next meeting is Wednesday, October 11 All parents of SLSS students are members of PAC and everyone is welcome to attend. PAC meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month. A wide variety of school, district and Ministry of Education topics are discussed, as well as, the latest trends and issues with teenagers. It is a great opportunity to meet the principal as well as other parents in an informal and welcoming setting. Our first PAC meeting was held on September 16. PAC chairs, Michèle McLean and Roisin Clenachan-Johnson, welcomed over 30 parents to the meeting. Carol-Lyn Sakata, principal, talked to parents about school organization and class size and class composition at SLSS and beginning school events and activities. The next meeting is Wednesday, October 11 at 6:30 PM in the school library. Ms. Sakata will be speaking about learning support at SLSS and ways that parents can support students in their learning.

DRY AFTER GRAD 2018 – Message to Grade 11 & 12 Parents: I am the out-going co-chair for the 2017 DAG (Dry After Grad). DAG is the parent hosted celebration for the Grade 12s held immediately after their June Dinner/Dance – June 29, 2018. DAG meets once a month to plan the event. I would like to invite you to attend the next meeting. For Grade 12 parents, the committee would like to hear what your child's interest are, what he/she may like for entertainment/food, etc. For the Grade 11 parents, it is a great opportunity to learn about the event to gather ideas for when it is your turn to host. In October, we will be meeting the new co-chairs plus discussing themes and entertainment for DAG 2018. Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 11th at 7:30 PM in the library at SLSS.

SLSS Fine Arts Music & Theatre

All the World’s a Stage The Drama department has started things off with a bang! After some great read throughs last June, Ms. Kosar and Directing and Scriptwriting student, Isaac Hoyland, have finished writing the script for “High School Confidential”, which is an episodic drama that the Drama Club plans to produce through the month of November. Each episode will be performed at lunch to student audiences with cliff-hanger endings leading to the next instalment! After all the episodes have been presented to lunchtime crowds of students, the club plans to present the entire sequence to evening audiences in late November.

Auditions for the play were held at the end of September and it was gratifying to Ms. Kosar to see so much great talent in all grades at Steveston-London. Rehearsals start in the first week of October. With cast and crew, it looks like over sixty students will be taking part in producing the play! It’s an exciting new project for the enthusiastic students of the Drama Club and we all hope to be able to provide a hard-hitting look at various aspects of student life with this very realistic and dramatic show! Stay tuned for dates!
