Are you a good detective? The Vocabulary Constabulary needs your help. This is all you have to do. You can often detect the meaning of a word by reading it in context, that is, by reading the other words around it in a piece of text. Find the page and the article in TPP and then detect the word or phrase that solves the clue to its meaning. The number of letters and the starting letter of the solution are in brackets after each clue.

Some statements to think about?

The public should have more of a say in how the budget is planned.

A sugar tax will not stop anyone from eating and drinking healthier.

Build more houses and give them to people for free.

Build new hospitals to cater for all the people waiting on trolleys.

In Have Your Say, we want to get you

talking. Actually, more than talking,

we want to get you discussing,

thinking and arguing (but in a

productive manner), so that you can

air your views on matters of the

world. And if you don’t have views on

such matters, now is the time to start.

Have your say!

This month’s topic: Budget 2018

In class groups, or in pairs, discuss the above statements and see how you feel about the budget and how it is planned. Have your say about how, if you were in charge, the budget would be planned.

Nobel Peace Prize 2016

The president of Colombia, Juan Manuel Santos, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2016

for his efforts to end a 52-year conflict in the country. In august, Mr. Santos sined an

agreement with FARC, who have been waging a civil war, to bring hostilities to a close.

However, in early october the agreement was rejected in a reforendum by the Colombian

people.

In announcing the award, Kaci Kullmann Five, the chairwoman of the Norwegian Nobel Commitee (NNC), praised Mr. Santos for starting the piece process. ‘The award should also be seen as a tribut to the Colombian people who, despite great hardships and abuses, have not given up hope of a just peace, and to all the parties who have contributed to the peace prosess,’ she said.

President Santos was born into a wealthy family in the capital bogotá and traned as an

economist in the US. He was Minister for Defence before becoming presadent and has spent

the last four years trying to bring the war to an end. He has said, ‘Making peace is much

more difficult than making war because you need to change sentimints of people, people

who have suffered, to try to persuade them to forgive.’

The NNC made its 2016 selection from a record number of canditates, 376 in all. They hope that the awarding of the prize to President Santos will act as a spur for a future agreement and peace in Colombia. the prize amount was 18 million Swedish kronor, or about €850,000. The prize-giving ceremony took place in oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel in 1896.

Did you know?

The following Irish people have received the Nobel Peace Prize: Seán McBride 1974,

Mairéad Maguire and Betty Williams 1976 and John Hume and David Trimble 1998.
