WHAT IS DESIGN CREATIVITY AND TECHNOLOGY
When you go on a holiday and take pictures of yourself, your family and the environment that is Art.
When you take a photograph for the purpose of solving a range of people’s problems, that is ‘Design
Creativity and Technology’.

The production of objects made in Design Creativity and Technology is carried out through the
creative strategy called the ‘Design Process’. You will use the design process later to produce your
products, but before we do that, let's have a look at workshop safety.
WORKSHOP SAFETY
The goal of our workplace is for you to come in, have fun, enjoy yourself and most importantly,
for you not to suffer any injury. But we need your help to achieve that.
ASSESSMENT 3: WORKSHOP SAFETY
To make sure that the workshop is a safe place to be in we all must follow the safety rules of the
room.
How: Listen to your instructor, identify the important words he/she is saying, then write why these
practices are important in the design and technology classroom.

Hand-Sawing Tools
Hand-Sawing tools are tools that have the ability to cut through materials such as acrylic, timber and
metal. Sawing tools are different to cutting tools in that they have many small sharpened teeth that
work together and the user pushes and draws the saw back and forth. Most saws cut on the push
stroke and clear on the draw stroke.
Hand-sawing tools that you will be using in the technology room includes:
Coping saw
Tenon saw
Hacksaw
Coping Saw
Coping saws are used for cutting sharp of flat
curves in acrylic and thin timber such plywood. NOTE: A coping saw is different from other
saws. A coping saw is designed to cut
on the draw stroke only.

Tenon Saw
A tenon saw is a metal blade with a timber handle
on one end and a stiff metal backing along the top
of the blade with teeth cut into the bottom edge of
the blade.
The tenon saw is used in conjunction with a vice
and/or bench hook for cutting small pieces of
timber.

Hacksaw
A hacksaw is a metal frame holding a blade that is
tensioned within the frame.
The hacksaw is most commonly used in
technology for cutting metal.

T-type tap wrench
T-type tap wrenches have a small adjustable two-
jaw chuck on the end of a stem with a “T” handle.
The tap wrench is used to hold a tap so you can
put a thread into a piece of material.
