Why did Southington Choose
the Search Institute Survey? While this survey does measure drug use,
violence and other problem behaviors, itsprimary focus is on Youth Developmental
Assets By measuring the 40 Developmental
Assets, the survey results provide direction
for community collaborations aimed atimproving Southington¶s investment inour children and creating a more positiveenvironment for our children to grow in.

The 40 Developmental Assets
The 40 Developmental Assets
The 40 developmental assets are basic building blocks of human development. Assets are crucial
for the healthy development of all youth. The more of the 40 assets kids have the better.
Youth with high asset levels are less likely to engagein high-risk behaviors, and more likely to engage inthriving behaviors
Asset building is about relationships²we all can doit. You can make a difference and help a young
person succeed!

Common themes on the importance of assets:
Assets give young people the strengths they need to make positive choices in life.
Assets divert youth from risky behaviors andincrease civic engagement.
Assets promote academic success.
Across the United most young people now experience fewer than half of the 40
Developmental Assets.

Survey was administered in March 2010 The administration of the Attitudes and
Behavior Survey was voluntary, confidentialand anonymous
1,399 7th, 9th, & 11th grade youth completed thesurvey
Only 3%* of surveys were discarded for at least1 of 4 factors to ensure high quality data.
*Typically, between 5% & 8% are discarded
