Start ANSYS10.0Check Structural and FLOTRAN CFD in ANSYS main menu.

    Read input file

GUI Path: Auxiliary menu>File>read input from.Browse for input.txt file in the dialogue box.

ANSYS reads the file and executes the commands written in that file.

    input.txt file contains APDL commands

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    6/27

the keypoints look like the figure shown.

Now to draw splines at leading and trailing edge of the blade so that we may Fillet thelines.

GUI Path: Preprocessor> modeling >create>lines>splines>spline through keypoints

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    7/27

check the radio button in front of Min,Max,Inc

    and enter 1,10,1 click Apply.

the B-spline is drawn from kp#1 to kp#10.

Again in the B-spline dialogue box, check List of items and enter 1, then check

Min,Max,Inc and enter 64,70,1 and click ApplyA b-spline is drawn form keypoint 1 through 46 to 70.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    8/27

Now zoom in the front edge of the blade by right mouse drag.Draw spline through kp# 55 to kp# 63

And another spline through all the kps between kp#100 and 107 and to the kp#63

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    9/27

Now to fillet the leading edge of the blade

    GUI Path: preprocessor >modeling>create>lines>line fillet

    Pick both lines and Apply

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    10/27

Line fillet dialogue box opensEnter value for fillet radius 1.25e-3 (its in meter units!!)

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    11/27

The lines after fillet look like this

now fillet line at the trailing edge ,as fillet diameter is 0.0013meter, we enter in fillet radiustab 1.3e-3/2.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    12/27

The lines after fillet are shown in figure.

Now delete the splines which were used for creating the fillet, dont delete the lines

    GUI Path: preprocessor>delete>lines only

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    13/27

Pick the lines to be deleted by mouse picking.

To draw concave surface of the blade

    Create a spline through the kp# 110,64 to107 and 109

To draw the convex side of the blade create three splines (three!! Because during meshing

we will use quadrilateral meshing elements in the region between the blades)

Create spline using key points 111,3 to 27

    Create a spline using key point# 27 to 47

    Create a spline using key point# 47 to 61 and 108.

Now the blade profile is ready.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    14/27

Now delete all unnecessary key points using command

    APDL command: Kdel,all

GUI Path: preprocessor>modeling>delete>keypoints> pick allIgnore any Error or warning messages ! just keep proceeding

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    15/27

    compress keypoint numbersGUI Path: preprocessor>Numbering Ctrls>compress numbers>

In the dbox select keypoints and click OK.

Hurrah !! now there are only six keypoints.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    16/27

    Now create area of blade

    GUI Path: preprocessor> modeling>create>areas>arbitrary>by lines

Check the Loop radio button and pick any line in graphical window by mouse all thelines will be selected and click OK. Blade area is created.

Now copy this area along y axis

GUI Path: preprocessor>modellig>copy>areas>graphically select the area click OK . next in the dialog box enter 6 for number of copies

and 0.04 for DY click OK.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    17/27

    Six blades are created.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    18/27

now copy the concave side line of the uppermost blade a distance of 0.04cm above along y-

    axis.

And the convex-side lines of the lower most blade a distance of -0.04cm along y-axis.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    19/27

now copy the left-end keypoints of the uppermost and lowermost lines toward the left to

    make inlet duct.

Pick keypoints and copy to 24cm i-e 0.24m at an angle of 12 degree.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    20/27

now create lines to make inlet duct.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    21/27

similarly copy the right-end keypoints of upper and lower most blades toward right hand

side a distance of 12cm at an angle of 60 degree.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    22/27

now join these keypoints such that the outlet duct is created.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    23/27

Now create the lines between blade passages so that at a later time we can do mapped mesh

    in that regular(4-sided) areas.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    24/27

now create areas by picking lines using mouse.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    25/27

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    26/27

Now to make volume from areas use extrusion technique.

Create two keypoints to define a line along z-axis.Kp,1000,0,0,0

    Kp,1001,0,0,0.097

    Then

    L,1000,1001

    Creates 9.7cm line along z-axis.

Now select all the areas and extrude along this line.

GUI path: ansys main menu>modeling>operate>extrude>areas>along lines

select all the areas and then click ok.Then select the line drawn just now.

    And click OK.

    Volumes will be created.

  • 8/2/2019 Step1 of 3D Geometry Creation

    27/27

until now the geometry is complete.
