2007 International Conference on MDG Statistics

• 1-3 October 2007, coincided with the Philippines’ celebration of the 18th National Statistics Month

• Organized by the Philippine Statistical System, spearheaded by the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) with funding support from the Department of Foreign Affairs

• Jointly conducted with the following:- UN Statistics Division (UNSD);- UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific

(UNESCAP) Statistics Division;- Asian Development Bank; and the - Philippines’ UN Country Team (UNCT), including the UNDP.• In cooperation with the following:- UNICEF- UNDP/NEDA

• Follow up on the recommendations of the Workshop on Statistics for Monitoring the Achievement of the MDGs in the Asia and the Pacific conducted by the UNESCAP in Bangkok in 2006;

• Venue for a midterm evaluation since the Millennium Declaration in 2000

•The NSCB Technical Staff (TS) coordinated with the UNSD, international organizations, Regional Commissions, and national statistical agencies.

•The NSCB-TS distributed questionnaires to agencies which participated in the 2007 ICMDGS as well as in the 2011 ICMDGS to monitor the implementation of the recommendations of the former.

1. Initiate a study to investigate the reasons for discrepancies between national and international data, and for data gaps, for a group of two or three selected countries in their region

- Conduct of a series of workshops to identify data discrepancies between national and international databases

1) The first round of workshops has already taken place in all regions

2) Second round has just started, with a workshop carried out in coordination with ESCWA

3) One planned to be held in the ESCAP region early 2012

- DFID project on “MDG Labs”, through UNSD in coordination with NSAs to compile national data and publish it side by side with international data.

4. Metadata of nationally produced data should be provided and improved so that users at the international level can understand the methodology behind the data.

BangladeshOngoing. Metadata for nationally represented surveys are being done and will be hosted in BBS website soon.

Lao PDR30 out of 49 indicators are international MDG indicators which contain full metadata. The current ongoing DI Monitoring project is aiming to strengthen the metadata as well.

MalaysiaAvailable online. Metadata has been provided for 49 out of 68 indicators. It has been uploaded into “MalaysiaInfo” since 2010.

MexicoEstablished. Also includes a public calendar. By mid October , it has transformed 32 indicators into SDMX.

PhilippinesEstablished since 2004. The NSCB, as coordinator and policy making body on statistical matters in the Philippines, serves as the repository of the MDG indicators in the Philippines.
