Steven Galloway was a tenured Associate Professor in the Creative Writing Program
in the Faculty of Arts at the UBC Vancouver campus !e held that ran" commencing
#uly $% &'$( Prior to that he was an Assistant Professor% )ecturer and Sessional)ecturer from Septem*er &''$ !e was also the Chair of the Creative Writing
Program from &'$(
+n ,ovem*er &'$- UBC received serious allegations of misconduct against Steven
Galloway Given the serious nature of the allegations% he was placed on suspensionwith pay e.ective ,ovem*er $/% &'$- until the investigation was completed
Additional complaints were received in ,ovem*er and 0ecem*er &'$- Given the
comple1ity and serious nature of multiple allegations and the need for a fair%thorough and timely process% on ,ovem*er &'% &'$- the 0ean of Arts% 0r Gage
Averill% engaged the !onoura*le 2ary 3llen Boyd% a former 4ustice of the BC
Supreme Court% to conduct an investigation She provided her report to the 0ean
on April &-% &'$/
0ean Averill reviewed the report with Steven Galloway% and Steven Galloway did not
dispute any of the critical 5ndings +n addition to the allegations investigated *y the
!onoura*le 2ary 3llen Boyd% 0ean Averill also too" into consideration other
allegations After ta"ing into consideration all of the relevant information% 0eanAverill made his recommendation to the President on 2ay ('% &'$/
As re6uired *y Article $''( of the Collective Agreement with the UBC Faculty
Association% the President met with Steven Galloway on #une (% &'$/ to canvass a
num*er of matters As a result of the 5ndings in this meeting% coupled with the0ean7s recommendation and the investigative 5ndings of the !onoura*le 2ary 3llen
Boyd% the President concluded that there was a record of misconduct that resultedin an irrepara*le *reach of the trust placed in faculty mem*ers *y the university% its
students and the general pu*lic She made her recommendation to the Board ofGovernors on #une &$% &'$/ Steven Galloway is no longer employed at the
University of British Colum*ia
8hese "inds of cases are always very di9cult for everyone involved 8he university
ac"nowledges the community7s need for information and assurance that itsprocesses have *een applied fairly At the same time% the university must *alance
the need to respect the personal privacy of *oth complainants and respondents and
to provide them with a safe space in which to *ring forward their concerns and
perspectives
