We can no longer wait for our congregations to just show up at church,

but rather we need to go out to where our congregations and all people who

are hungry for mercy and love and hope are, and bring Jesus to them!

SACRED MUSIC

Beginning July 26, and continuing through August,

join me as we travel around the world exploring the

roots of our Anglican musical tradition. We'll start

in Paris, around the year 1000, and hear the earli-

est beginnings of polyphony (music with more than

one melody at a time). Then we'll go to Renais-

sance Rome, and hear how that polyphonic tradi-

tion had evolved over 600 years. At that time,

some in the church called for a radical rethinking

of music, because they felt that it had become so

complex that the texts being sung could not be

understood. So, we'll hear how two Reformation

churches (the Church of England, and Martin Lu-

ther's church in Germany) changed music. We'll

hear Lutheran chorales (many of which Martin

Luther borrowed from drinking songs), and their

culmination in the music of J.S. Bach. And we'll

hear the musical beginnings of our own Anglican

tradition, as composers William Byrd and Thomas

Tallis attempt to navigate the politically turbulent

time of the reign of King Henry VIII and his succes-

sors (when the official Church of England changed

back and forth from Protestant to Catholic). We'll

also watch a recent BBC documentary that fea-

tures singers singing all of this music in the places

for which it was written.

Sept. 13 – Oct. 11

A Study of the Gospel of Mark

St. Mark’s Gospel, the shortest and earliest, of the four Gos-

pels, tells us “the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”

(Mark 1:1) It includes parables, tales about miracles, some

teaching, and an extended account of the last week and the

passion of Christ. It is a story of relationships, good and bad,

local and universal. We will explore this Gospel over five Sun-

days, focusing upon its history, structure, and themes; para-

bles and miracles; friends and enemies; the passion of Christ;

and the way it speaks to us in our 21st Century world. You

are invited to bring your own Bibles to this class, which will

include presentations and opportunities for discussion.

Facilitator: Dr. Gillian E. Cook, O.P. is a Sister in the Anglican

Dominican Order of Preachers, and a member of St. Mark’s

Episcopal Church. A teacher for all her adult life, she has

worked with children, young people, and adults in England,

Canada, and the United States. She taught at the University

of Texas at San Antonio for 22 years, training teachers and

educational leaders. In retirement she enjoys reading, teach-

ing, volunteer work, and being with people.

Sarah Kates

Director of Children, Youth

and Family Ministries

All are called to serve and we can do anything God

calls us to do with His help.

What a special day is was at Camp Capers on the morning of Fri-

day, June 12! Senior High Camp A along with Bishop Lillibridge and

friends gathered on the hill near the entrance gate to dedicate the

new cross given by beloved Sara Goebel, employee of Camp Capers

since 2012. Sara loves to work and serve the campers, staff, and

visitors of Camp Capers. One of Sara’s many important summer

jobs is organizing the mail and care packages each day. She was

deemed the “mail fairy” during one of the sessions last summer.

This title fits Sara perfectly because fairies leave fairy dust on what-

ever they touch and wherever they go. Sara’s joy and exuberance

touches the hearts of everyone she meets and serves. Just like the

Holy Spirit, Sara’s spirit is contagious and unforgettable. Camp

Capers is blessed beyond measure to have Sara as a part of the

staff. She gave out of the goodness of her heart a symbol that will

always remind us and those to come that we are indeed very good

and worthy of the love of our heavenly Father. After the Bishop

Lillibridge blessed the new cross, those gathered sang and danced

to “It’s a Happy, Happy Day.” In that moment, I was deeply humbled

as I sensed the kingdom of God on earth.

Meet Bright Beginnings Director Jennifer Ekberg St. David’s Church is thrilled to begin a new early childhood care pro-

gram, called Bright Beginnings for children ages 3 months through 16

months. This program will begin in August across the hall from the

church office in the former Parlor and Music Room. Because St. David’s

Day School begins accepting students at 14 months of age, this pro-

gram will be a perfect complement to our desire to provide the highest

quality Christian education for children and their siblings even from the

earliest age. Jennifer Ekberg will serve as the director of the program

and has been working tirelessly last spring and through the summer to

make sure the program is off to a perfect start!

Q: Tell us a little about yourself… your background, family and interests.

A: I am originally from Hutchinson, Kansas where I lived until I married

my husband Ed and moved to Ft. Riley, Kansas where he was active duty Army. We have moved many times over

the last 19 years we have been married. The Army is what brought us to San Antonio. Ed was stationed at Ft. Sam

and he retired last year after 24 years in the military. We bought a home and decided to retire here in San Anto-

nio. We have two kids Samantha (18 years old) and Jacob (13 years old). Samantha just graduated in June and

will be attending SAC and Jacob attends Cole Middle School on Ft. Sam. I love to camp, read, kayak, hike and ex-

ploring state and national parks. I have owned my own in-home child care home for 8 years as well as being an

Assistant Director of a day care center. I have worked in other preschools over the last 20 years and also worked

as the receptionist for the St. David’s Episcopal School for 3 years.

Q: What appeals to you most about your new job as Director of Bright Beginnings?

A: I am so excited to welcome these newest children into the St. David's Community. Watching them continue all

the way into the Day School and possibly all the way to Kindergarten here at St. David's warms my heart. I am hon-

ored that the families have chosen the Bright Beginnings Program to be their child's first experience with "school".

Q: What is the enrollment of Bright Beginnings?

A: We will have two classrooms with 8 students in a classroom at a time. The students can enroll for different days

and also different times during those days so, as of now, we have 28 students enrolled.

Q: What can the church community due to support this exciting new program?

A: We still need an after-school teacher and substitute

teachers. We would love to have volunteers who

would help the teachers rock, feed, and play with the

children. They should contact me to get information

about these opportunities We would love to have do-

nations of two refrigerators which need to be big, col-

lege dorm-sized (about 4.5 cubic ft.). We also need

someone who loves to sew because we need covers

made to place on our new sinks when they are not in

use. You can contact me at [email protected]

or call the church office.

As you can read, St. David’s is truly blessed to have

Jennifer’s leadership. Please call or email Jennifer or

Rev. Lisa if you can help!
