Cuban President Raul Castro “Willing To Talk To US”Cuban President Raul Castro “Willing To Talk To US”Cuban President Raul Castro “Willing To Talk To US”Cuban President Raul Castro “Willing To Talk To US”Cuban President Raul Castro “Willing To Talk To US” GUANTANAMO, Cuba,Thursday, July 26, 2012: In an impromptu address todayat a Revolution Day ceremonyCuban President Raul Castrosaid that he is willing to holdtalks with the United States. Mr. Castro, who had not spokenat the event for the past twoyears, grabbed the microphoneto address the crowd in theeastern province of Guantanamo. He said he would hold talks withthe US, as long as it was “aconversation between equals”. The two countries have not haddiplomatic relations for fivedecades. President Castro said the offerhad already been made throughdiplomatic channels and that notopic was off limits. “Any day they want, the tableis set,” Mr Castro said. The ceremonies began at 7 amto avoid the burning heat and, inthe new, post-Fidel style, it wasall over by 8:20 am. Raul Castro had not spoken atthis event for the past two yearsbut today, looking sprightly, cracked jokes.

In defence of the CubanRevolution, Castro was full ofdefiance against the US. There was however, no bigannouncement for those Cubansfrustrated by the slow pace ofeconomic and social reforms. The message was change“without haste”. As for increasing the average$20 monthly salary, that will nothappen, they were told, untilthose changes make the economyproductive. He said he was prepared todiscuss “the problems ofdemocracy, human rights etc.But on equal terms because we

are no-one’s colony”. Cuba will remain independentand free, he said, and nothing likethe uprisings in Libya or Syria, backed by foreign forces, willhappen in the country. If the US wanted confrontation,he quipped, then it should be inbaseball or some other sport. “Preferably baseball whensometimes they win, sometimeswe do,” he said. Turning to internal matters, hesaid that social and economicreforms within Cuba would go on“little by little”. The annual ceremony marks the59th anniversary of the failed

storming of the Moncada militarybarracks, often considered thebeginning of the revolution ledby his brother Fidel Castro. Fidel Castro frequently usedRevolution Day addressesto make major policy announce-ments. This year’s main celebra-tion began at dawn with music andspeeches. First Vice President JoseRamon Machado Ventura saidin a keynote address that Havanawould continue efforts to shutdown the US naval base there. “We will continue to fight sucha flagrant violation... we willnever stop trying to recover thatpiece of ground,” he said

The March 2011 earthquakeand tsunami contributed topushing life expectancy figuresdown in Japan. Japanese women have fallenbehind Hong Kong in global lifeexpectancy rankings for the firsttime in 25 years. This was partly due to thedevastating earthquake andtsunami that hit the country inMarch 2011, said an annualreport by Japan’s health ministry. The expected lifespan forJapanese women dropped from86.30 years in 2010 to to 85.90years in 2011. The official life expectancyfor women in Hong Kong lastyear was 86.70 years. Japan has topped the women’srankings for a quarter of acentury, with longevity attributedin part to a healthy traditional

diet. The magnitude 9.0 earthquakeand tsunami that left more than20,000 dead or missing pushedthe life expectancy down. However the report notedthat even without the disasterJapanese women would still havedropped behind Hong Kong inthe statistics. Other factors contributing tothe dip included a rise in the num-ber of suicides among Japanesewomen, disease and othernatural death causes, the reportsaid. The life expectancy for men inJapan also declined from 79.55in 2010 to 79.44 last year. Few symptoms are morealarming than chest pain. In the minds of many people, chest pain equals heart pain. Andwhile many other conditionscan cause chest pain, cardiacdisease is so common – and sodangerous – that the symptom ofchest pain should never bedismissed out of hand as beinginsignificant. The purpose of this article is tohelp you understand chestpain – what it feels like, whatmight be causing it, how it shouldbe evaluated, and when to treat itas an emergency.

What is chest pain? “Chest pain” is an impreciseterm. It is often used to describeany pain, pressure, squeezing, choking, numbness or any otherdiscomfort in the chest, neck, orupper abdomen, and is oftenassociated with pain in the jaw, head, or arms. It can last from less than asecond to days or weeks, canoccur frequently or rarely, and can occur sporadically orpredictably. With such a broad

definition, you can see why theterm “chest pain” is itself oflittle help to doctors. It is important to keep in mindthat chest pain is merely asymptom, not a diagnosis. Andbecause it can be a symptom ofanything from a catastrophic to atrivial medical problem, when aperson experiences chestpain it is important to try tocharacterize that pain as rapidlyas possible as being eithercompletely benign, or possiblysignificant.

What medical problemscause chest pain?

Chest pain is merely asymptom, not a diagnosis. Many

medical problems can causechest pain, and before the chestpain can be adequately treated, the actual underlying cause needsto be identified. The following is a list of themore common causes of chestpain, roughly in order of thefrequency in which they are seenin the emergency room. Click on any of these causes ofchest pain for more details:

angina due to coronary artery disease

heart attackheartburnbenign chest wall painanxiety or panic disorderasthma, bronchitis,

pneumonia, pleuritismitral valve prolapsepericarditisrecent chest traumapeptic ulcer

artery spasmangina due to cardiac

syndrome Xaortic dissection

In young, healthy peoplepresenting with chest pain, thecondition “benign chest wallpain” is particularly common. This is a diagnosis that doctorsdo not understand very well, and

consequently neither do theirpatients. Because this conditionis completely harmless, the lackof understanding on the part ofpatients as to what is causing thepain often leads to monthsor years of needless worry oranxiety.

How should chest pain beevaluated? If the chest pain is

acute in onset: When you arrive in theemergency room with chest pain, doctors can usually get to theroot of your problem quiterapidly by: 1) taking a directed medicalhistory, 2) performing a physicalexamination, 3) getting an ECG and cardiacenzymes. If the diagnosis is stillin doubt, further testing will beneeded, depending on whichconditions are being considered. The first order of business isto rule out a potentiallylife-threatening cardiac problem– heart attack usually being themain concern (aortic dissection- a tearing of the wall of theaorta - is also life-threatening,

Chest Painbut far less common). Rapidly diagnosing heart attackis especially important sinceimmediate treatment can signifi-cantly limit the heart damage thatoccurs, and can prolong overallsurvival. Almost as important isthe diagnosis of unstable angina, since rapid and aggressive treat-ment of this condition is alsonecessary to prolong survival. Once a life-threateningproblem is ruled out, mostemergency room doctors willmake a presumptive diagnosis(i.e., “This is probably what’scausing your pain,”) and referyou to your own physicianfor follow-up evaluation andtreatment.

If the chest pain is amore chronic, recurrent, or

non-acute problem: Angina due to coronary arterydisease is the chief concern here.Often, stress testing with thalliumwill be needed to rule out thisdiagnosis, and not infrequently acardiac catheterization will alsobe necessary. The importance ofdiagnosing angina is not to

relieve your pain, but insteadto deal with the long-termimplications of angina. Namely, the coronary artery disorder thatcauses angina is a progressivedisease process that gets worseover time, and – if untreated –often leads to heart attacks, disability, and death. It isvitally important to make thediagnosis so that treatment canbe optimized not only to relievethe pain, but also to slow or haltthe progression of the underlyingcoronary artery disease. When something other than“routine” coronary arterydisease is causing your chest paina diagnosis also needs to be madebefore the pain can be adequatelytreated. Depending on whichproblems might be suspected byyour doctor, you may need x-rays,endoscopy of your GI tract, orpulmonary (lung) function tests.

When is chest pain anemergency?

As we have seen, the term“chest pain” encompasses manydifferent kinds of symptoms andmany different kinds of medicaldisorders. Some of these

disorders are quite benign andtrivial, but some are dangerousand life-threatening. So whenyou have chest pain, how do youknow when to treat it as anemergency? There are no hard and fastrules here. Sometimes even mi-nor chest symptoms can turn outto be due to coronary arterydisease (evidenced by the factthat up to 30% of heart attacksare accompanied by symptomsso trivial that the patient doesnot notice them). And youshould tell your doctor about anychest pain you experience. Buthere are some general guidelinesthat are useful for decidingwhether you need to go to theemergency room. Chest pain is relatively likelyto represent a dangerous cardiacdisorder - and should be treatedas an emergency - if any of thefollowing are true: · You are 40 years old orolder, and have one or more riskfactors for coronary arterydisease (family history, smoking, obesity, sedentarylifestyle, elevated cholesterol, diabetes). · You are any age and have avery strong family history of

early heart disease. · The pain can best bedescribed by the termstightness, squeezing, heaviness,or crushing. · The pain is accompanied byweakness, nausea, shortness ofbreath, sweating, dizziness orfainting. · The pain “radiates” to theshoulders, arms, or jaw. · The pain is more severe thanany you have had before. · The pain is accompanied bythe uncontrollable feeling thatsomething is horribly wrong(this is often called by doctors,“a sense of impending doom”). · The pain gets continuallyworse over the first 15 or 20minutes. · The pain is new – you havenever experienced anything likeit before. On the other hand, chest painis relatively unlikely to representa dangerous cardiac disorder ifeither of the following are true: · The pain changes withchanges in body position. · The pain is momentary orfleeting. · You have had similarpains in the past, and a cardiacdisorder was ruled out.

Family Connections Sends James Loco

Happy To Be Drunk

A psychiatrist visited the crazy house. She walked over to James and asked:"How did you get here? What wasthe nature of your illness?" James said: “It all started when Igot married and I guess I shouldnever have done it. I married awoman with a grown daughter whoautomatically became my step-daughter”. "My dad came to visit us andhe fell in love and married mylovely stepdaughter. And so mystepdaughter automaticallybecame my stepmother”. “My wife later had a son whowas, of course, my father’sbrother-in-law since my son is thehalf-brother of my stepdaughter,

who is my father's wife. "So when my stepdaughtermarried my father, she becamemy stepmother! Now, since mynew son is brother to mystepmother, he also became myuncle. This therefore makes mywife my step-grandmother sinceshe is my stepmother's mother. And since my stepmother is mystepdaughter, I am my wife'sgrandson. "But hold on just a few minutesmore. Since I'm married to mystep-grandmother, I am not onlymy wife's husband and grandson,I am also my own grandfather. “Now can you understand whyI am in this place?"

A completely inebriatedman was stumbling down BurnsAvenue. A policeman found himwith one foot on the pavement andthe other in the drain. A policemen said, "I've got totake you in. You're obviouslydrunk." The totally wasted man asked,"Aciffer, are ya sure, sure, sure

Discharged From Military Service His battalion was getting readyfor deployment in Afganistan. Private Jones J. was scaredof going to the frontline. Thestories of soldiers returning incoffins or in wheel chairs withone or both legs missing, weretoo much for Jones to handle. Jones knew that he had to getout of the army before the dateof deployment. His Commanding Generalnoticed Jones behaving oddly ashe walked around the compoundall day. Approaching every piece ofpaper on the ground, Jones would

bend down, pick up the paper, frown and shout "That's not it"and he would lay the paper backon the ground again. This went on for several daysuntil the General arranged to haveJones psychologically tested. At the end of the examinationthe psychologist concludedthat Jones was deranged andtherefore not fit for militaryservice. The psychologist promptlywrote out his discharge from thearmy. Jones picked up the paper, smiled and said, "That's it."

Mr. Garcia visited his doctorand said “Doc, I am not able todo all the things around thehouse that I used to do.” When the examination wascomplete, he said, "Now, Doc, Ican take it. Tell me in plainEnglish what's wrong with

me." "Well, in plain English," thedoctor replied, "You're just aplain old lazy bum." "Thank You." respondedMr. Garcia "Now give me themedical term for that, so thatI can tell my wife!"

Making It Difficult For the Wife

During a visit to the CrazyHouse, a visitor asked theDirector what was the test usedto determine whether a personshould be institutionalized ornot. "Well," said the Director, "wefill up a bathtub, then weoffer a teaspoon, a teacup anda bucket to the person andask the person to empty the

bathtub." "OK, I understand," said thevisitor. "A normal person wouldmost naturally use the bucketbecause it's bigger than thespoon or the teacup." "Actually," said the Director,"A normal person would justpull the plug. So tell me, doyou want a room in the back orone in the front?"

What A Normal Person Would Do

The New York banker wasrecently arrested and chargedfor embezzling $100,000 topay for his daughter's collegeeducation. As the policeman, who also

had a daughter in college, wasleading him away in handcuffs,he said to the banker, "I havejust one question for you.Where were you going to getthe rest of the money?"

The High Cost Of Education

Two women came before wiseKing Solomon, dragging betweenthem a young man. "This young man agreed tomarry my daughter," said thefirst woman "No! He agreed to marry MYdaughter," said the secondwoman. And so they began arguing untilthe King called for silence. "Bring me my biggestsword," said King Solomon,"and I shall cut this youngman in half. Each of you shallreceive a half." "Sounds good to me," said the

first woman. But the other woman said, "OhSir, do not spill innocentblood. Let the other woman'sdaughter marry him." The wise king did not hesitatea moment. "The man mustmarry the first woman'sdaughter," he proclaimed inagreement. "That does not seem right”exclaimed the king's court. Shewas willing for you to cut him intwo!" "Indeed," said wise KingSolomon. "That shows she isthe TRUE mother-in-law."

Olympic Torch Arrives In LondonOlympic Torch Arrives In LondonOlympic Torch Arrives In LondonOlympic Torch Arrives In LondonOlympic Torch Arrives In London

Up to now if you asked me howI felt about the Olympic GamesI’d have responded, “I cannotwait until they are over”. Having to put up with thetransport unions going on strikebecause they wanted a bonusduring the Olympic for doingtheir job, the Mayor of Londontelling people to stay off busesand trains so the Olympic visitorscan get around (I do have a jobI’d like to get to) and thedisappointment of having thegames on your doorstep and notbeing able to get tickets, I’d feltlike I should have been intraining for how to cope withdaily living in an Olympic HostCity. On the 17th of May, 2012 HRHThe Princess Royal (PrincesAnne to you and me) along withLondon Mayor Boris Johnsonand footballer David Beckhamarrived in Athens Greece toreceive the Olympic Flame afterit’s 1,864 mile, eight day journeyaround Greece. I continued to be irritated by theconstant news reports, picturesand newspaper coverage of thisdamn Olympics to the point ofwanting to scream every timesomeone mentioned the wordOlympics. But all that changed earlyMonday morning when I quicklygot up and out of my house tostart my own Olympic journey tosee the Olympic torch relay andcatch the Olympic fever that wasgripping London. So how does one get theOlympic Flame from Athens toLondon? Is it really the same flame thatyou see lit during the ancientceremony performed in Greeceevery time there is an Olympicgame? And what’s the big deal aboutthe Olympic Flame anyway youmay ask? Well, STAR Readers grab a seat

and a cold drink while I share withyou a little history, don’t worryI’ll try not to bore you, some funfacts and my personal experiencewith the London 2012 OlympicTorch Relay!

THE OLYMPIC FLAME The Olympic Flame is thesymbol of the Olympic Gamesand commemorates the theft offire from the Greek god Zeus byPrometheus for the use and theadvancement of human kind. Today the lighting of theOlympic Flame follows a veryspecific ritual. It is lit from thesun’s rays using a mirror at thetemple of Hera the goddess oflove and marriage. This site is saidto be the home of the ancientOlympic Games. Once lit, the flame goes on ashort relay around Greece beforebeing handed to the host City inanother ceremony. In moderntimes the Flame made it’s firstappearance in 1928 at theOlympic games in Amsterdam. So how do you get the flame toLondon from Greece you may beasking? Well when you’re thebiggest celebrity on the planet, private plane of course.Seriously, no joke and if you stilldon’t believe me check out thepicture above. Yes even theOlympic Flame is required towear a seat belt.

When I looked at the torch forthe first time I thought to myself,‘it’s so simple so plain what’s thebig deal’, I was wrong. Throughout history the torch has had manydifficulties because of it’s designand function. The three mostimportant things to get right whendesigning a torch are, 1) make sure it’s light enoughfor the torch bearers to run with, 2) make sure the flame does notburn the person carrying it and 3) most important make sure itstays lit. It’s not brain surgery or nuclearscience so why is it hotly debatedand stress over? Let’s take a lookat the specs for the London 2012Torch. The Torch stands 800mm high, weighs 800 grams, light enoughfor all runners to carry. The 8,000holes representing the 8,000runners who will carry the torchand helps ensure the heat goesout of torch quickly not injuringthe runner by moving down thehandle of the torch. The holesalso provide extra grip and allowsyou to see the heart of the Flame, its unique burning system. But tryas they might some times oldmethods work best when keepingthe torch lit and this year is notexception. It will be kept burningusing the tried and tested decadeslong traditional butane and

propane gas. The torch also is meant tosymbolize the message of theOlympic Games. Three sidesrepresent; The Olympic motto, “higher, faster, stronger”; the threeOlympic values of “respect, excellence and friendship”; the3 times London has hostedthe Olympic, 1908, 1948 and2012 and also the Vision of theLondon 2012 Olympic Gamesto combine three bodies of work– sport, education and culture. Not Bad London.

THE TORCH RELAY The Torch Relay, while havinga sinister origin in the 1936Berlin Olympic games underHitler and the Nazi regime, hasbecome an all out spectacle witheach successive Host City tryingto out the other with new andcreative torch designs and waysof transporting the flame aroundthe Host City. Throughout history the Torchhas traveled by; Boat (1948),Airplane (1952), Radio Signal andlaser beam (1976), underwater(2000) and even by space ship(1996 & 2000). In 2004 there was the 1st

Global Torch Relay whichlasted 78 day, covered 78,000kilometers (48,467 miles)visiting every city that had everhosted the Olympic games goingas far as Africa and SouthAmerica before returning toAthens for the summer games. The London 2012 OlympicTorch Relay is no less spectacu-lar. Starting at Land’s End themost westerly point of the UnitedKingdom, the relay will lasts for70 days, covering approximately8,000 miles, and will end it’sjourney on July 27th when it willbe carried by the final of 8,000

Itwill also stay burning not to beextinguished until the closingceremony 2 weeks later signallythe end of the games.

MY OLYMPIC TORCHRELAY EXPERIENCE

After a ten minute walk to themain road I suddenly becamegripped with fear and panic. Whatif the rest of the neighborhoodfelt the same way I did and only asmall crowd turned out to see therunner carry the torch throughour streets? Reaching the cornerI turned left and found a space tosit on a wall waiting checking mywatch obsessively, 7:30am andonly four people not good. Thetorch passes at 8 where are all thepeople??? My stomach felt sick.7:45 and still only a few people10 by last count, fifteen minutesto go so till plenty of time forpeople to turn up.

Then like ants people started torun from all different directions, mothers with children startingtheir first day of summer schoolholidays, nurses and staff from anearby hospital on their coffee, Imean tea break (it is Englandafter all) started to push forprime viewing locations. A police car drove by withsirens blaring and behind me awoman shouted, “Well at leastthe handsome ones are on dutytoday”, everyone around meburst into laughter as the policein the car waved to the crowd. Ilooked at my watch it was 8:10. Ichecked my camera thensuddenly a little girls yelled “looklook”. I could not believe my

eyes, ten feet away from me wasthe Olympic bus with the torchbearers, the doors opened.A teenager named Lawrencestepped out in his shining whitetrack suit, the crowd went wild asfear and nervous appeared on hisface. I looked around andhundreds of people were clappingand waving at him. A few steps behind anothertorch bearer appeared torch litready to pass the baton. TheOlympic Marshal appeared for“the kiss” the moment when onetorch lights the other and then isturned out. I could only see themarshal’s mouth moving givinginstruction to the two runnersand they following his lead.

Cameras were snapping childrenwere screaming and, as one torchlit the other, a roar came up fromthe crowd as Lawrence took uphis position. His torch began toshake and sweat started to pourdown his face. I ran in for a closerlook and steady my camera justin time to snap a picture when Iheard the marshal say “Ready”.It was then that I realized howclose I was standing. I move outof the way and Lawrence beganhis slow jog up the road with thecrowd cheering him on. I’m surethis will be a day neither he nor Iwill forget in a hurry. Ask me now if I have OlympicFever and I’ll say holding my twoOlympic quarter finals basketballtickets proudly, HELL YES.Thank God Belize did not send abasketball team or I’d really betorn on whom to route for. If anyone has any suggestionson how I can hold 3 flags (Belize, the USA and Great Britain)during the Men’s 400 meterhurdles and women’ 100 metersI’m open to suggestions. Stay tuned for my next articleon how the rich and famous travelto the Olympic. PREVIEW:London is being invaded byyachts.

Many people feel out of placewhen dining simply because theydon’t know how to follow tablemanners, especially if they havebeen invited to a nice place.Remember, good manners nevergo out of style.

1. Observe your host Follow their lead. The keyobjective in learning tablemanners (etiquette) is to feelcomfortable when dining withothers. The host is generally theleader at a dinner party or meal.If you are the host, don’t panic.Ensure you read up on etiquettebefore taking on the role ofhosting and operate within theboundaries so that you are easyto follow.

2. Wait for host to invite youto the table

The host may assign you to aseat. Stand behind the chair as theother guests get assembled. When the host sits, take yourseat. You’ll get extra points forhelping others, such as theelderly, into their seats beforeyou take yours. After you sit, pull your chair in to the table,

Eight Tips On Table Etiquittewithout dragging it over thefloor with a horrible scrape. Takeyour napkin from the tableimmediately, and place it neatlyon your lap. Then sit up straight, just like Mom always tells you.And keep those pesky elbowsoff the table, too.

3. Emulate your host Put your napkin in your lapwhen you see them doing it.Match their rate of eating.(After all, no one wants to havean empty plate when their hostis only halfway done with thedish.) If you see them eatingfinger food with a fork, followtheir lead - even if it seemsunreasonable. Assume that yourhost is always right; unless youcan definitely tell that they havebad manners, in which case youmay follow another guest.4. Use the appropriate cutlery

If there are many utensils inyour place setting and there ismore than one course, start onthe outside and work your way in.Again, observe your host if youhave any doubts.

5. Be polite Consider every action before

you do it and if you have theslightest doubt, don’t do it! Youmust consciously refrain fromembarrassing yourself and yourhost. Take small bites; do notchew with your mouth open; donot talk with food in your mouth;and do not place elbows on thetable.

6. How to pass items When someone says, “Pleasepass the _______,” reach for itonly if you are the closest one toit. Take the item and place it nextto your neighbor. Continuepassing the item in this manneruntil it reaches the person whoasked for it. Refrain fromhelping yourself along the way, before the person who askedfor it gets the chance. Waitpolitely until they have servedthemselves. Then ask for the bowlto be passed back to you.7. Take one roll or one slice

of bread only If you have a bread plate to theleft of your fork, put the bread onit. When the butter is passed toyou, use the serving knife to takea pat. Place it on your bread plate. Then pass the butter dish alongwith the serving knife to the nextperson. Use your fingers to tearoff a bite-size piece of bread.Butter ONLY that bite-sizedpiece. Then eat and repeat as

desired.8. Place your napkin next toyour plate on the table when

you wish to leave Wait for your host to indicatethe meal is complete. Then standup. Push your chair back in andthank your host for a deliciousmeal.
