Chapter 1: Setup overview

Standard Parts requires a version of Microsoft SQL Server or SQL Express be installed on themachine where the Standard Parts Administrator is installed.

If a version of SQL Server is not present on the machine Standard Parts Administrator setup willinstall SQL Server Express 2008 SP1 as a prerequisite.

Solid Edge recommends SQL Express 2008 SP1 or higher and SQL Server 2008 or higher to runproperly.

The installation of the Master Part Files on the server machine with SQL Express 2008 SP1configures SQL Express such that the Administrator and Master Part Files are available to use.Installation of the Master Part Files is on by default.

The Master Part Files include free sample content and a sample SQL Database. It is recommendedthat if this is the first time you are installing Standard Parts Administrator to install the sample files. This will create a database and configure the system so it is ready to use.

Note

If the Master Part Files are not installed you will have to create a database and configureStandard Parts manually after installation is complete.

Standard Parts Administrator and SQL Server do not need to be installed on the client machines thataccess the components in the Standard Parts Database. They only need to be installed on the server.

You will need to manually configure SQL so Standard Parts can create and connect to the databaseif you have installed:

• A version of SQL Express other than SQL Express 2008 SP1,

• A standalone version of SQL Server,

• Or if you did not install the optional Master Part files with Standard Parts Administrator.

Once SQL is properly configured, use the Standard Parts Configuration Wizard to create andconnect to a database.

Instructions on how to manually configure Standard Parts are located in the following chapters.

Chapter 2: Installing Standard Parts in anunmanaged environment

Follow these instructions to install Standard Parts in an environment where you manage files withouta PDM system. Later sections describe how to install Standard Parts in environments wheredocuments are managed with Insight or Teamcenter.

Standard Parts Administrator installation

1. Install Standard Parts Administrator on the workstation used for Standard Parts administration.Set the destination folder for Master Part Files. It should be a local/network location accessiblefrom other workstations (for example, \\Server\Public\SEStdParts). Full access permissionsare required for the target location.

• The Master Part Files feature installs only a free sample set of standard parts. Nevertheless, installing this feature creates necessary Solid Edge Standard Parts installation folderstructure. This structure can also be created later by installing Machinery or Piping StandardParts library or using the Solid Edge Standard Parts Configuration Wizard.

• It is best to identify the destination folder by typing the UNC address rather than by browsingin Look in. Nevertheless, local paths or mapped disks are supported.

2. Complete the installation.

After completing these steps, the Solid Edge Standard Parts installation folder structure is created(in this case at the location \\Server\Public\SEStdParts). For more details about folder structure, see the section Solid Edge Standard Parts Configuration Wizard.

It contains the following folders:

• Html

• Standard Parts (containing theFree Content parent parts: StandardParts\3D-Standard_Parts_V9.45\Parent_Parts)

• Working folder

Chapter 2: Installing Standard Parts in an unmanaged environment

• SMAPINIFile.sac

Note

If the Master Part Files (Free Content) is not installed, the folder structure described aboveis not created. To create it, some Standard Parts Library (Machinery or Piping) must beinstalled or Solid Edge Standard Parts Configuration Wizard must be used.

Standard Parts workstation setup

After you have set up the administration workstation, set the Standard Parts SAC file location onother workstations . The SAC file must be located in the UNC path that you defined during theStandard Parts administration installation.

Set the Standard Parts SAC file location

Step 1: Start Solid Edge and open an Assembly file.

The assembly file can be an existing document or a new one. It does not matter, becauseyou will not save any changes to the document, you are just using it to get into theAssembly environment.

Step 2: On the Application menu, click the Solid Edge Options button, which is located atthe bottom of the menu.

Step 3: In the Solid Edge Options dialog box, click the File Locations tab.

Step 4: In the list of file types, click Standard Parts SAC file, click Modify, and browse to thelocation of the SMAPINIFile.sac file in the installation folder created when you installedthe Standard Parts Administrator.

Chapter 3: Installing Standard Parts in an Insight environment

This section describes how to fully or partially migrate your local or network system, located at UNCpaths, to a SharePoint URL location. Direct installation and configuration with SharePoint from theStandard Parts setup is not possible with this version.

For more details about Solid Edge and Insight installation and workflows, refer to the Solid Edge andInsight documentation. Some Standard Parts themes are described in the Solid Edge help file.

All Insight server and client installation requirements must be met prior to performing these migrationsteps. For more details about installation and working with Insight, see Microsoft documentation forSharePoint, and see the Solid Edge Insight Implementation Guide for information about Insightservices. The minimum supported role at SharePoint is Contributor for all users.

The Solid Edge Standard Parts system has many limitations for Insight localization that are derivedfrom SharePoint and Insight limitations and rules; most important are:

1. Global limitations:

• There is a limitation for filename and path lengths, and some special characters are notsupported.

• Mandatory Insight properties must be added to all Document Libraries at the server, prior toimporting files to the library.

2. Workstation limitations:

• Proxy must be disabled or bypassed for LAN.

Insight Modes

Solid Edge allows the use of Insight in two different modes:

All on InsightPlaces the entire Standard Parts folder structure, including the SAC file but excluding thedatabase, on Insight.

Generated parts and working folder on InsightUses Insight only as the location for generated parts and working folder.

All on Insight mode

Standard Parts Administrator Setup

Step 1: Install Solid Edge on all workstations.

Solid Edge software must be installed. Solid Edge Insight Server or Insight Connect onlyinstallations are not supported.

Step 2: Install Standard Parts Serveron the workstation you want to use for remote StandardParts administration. Set the destination folder for Master Part Files. It should be a

Step 3: Complete the installation.

Step 4: If you need to install the Standard Parts full version of Libraries, follow the stepsdescribed in the Installing Libraries section (but you don’t need to register your parts inthe database).

Step 5: Create a target SharePoint document library (for example,http://isst3/SiteDirectory/example/StdParts). Do not forget to add Insight mandatoryproperties from Insight Server at this document library.

Step 6: Add a Network Place on your workstation pointing to the SharePoint URL. This stepis necessary for accessibility from some standard dialogs not customized for workingwith URLs.

Step 7: Launch the Configuration Wizard.

1. In Step 1 of the Configuration Wizard, browse to the Network Place you created inthe previous step.

This action can take several minutes, depending on the file size and number of filesthat you are attempting to upload.

Note

These instructions apply to the Standard Parts Server only.

If you did not install the Master Part files with Standard Parts Administrator and you do not have anSQL database, you will need to create and connect to one using the Standard Parts ConfigurationWizard.

Note

See the Standard Parts Users Guide, available from the Solid Edge menu, for information onadding parts to a new or existing database and converting prior databases to ST7.

Step 1: From the network machine running the Standard Parts Administrator, choose WindowsStart->All Programs->Solid Edge ST7->Standard Parts->Configuration Wizard.

In the Step 1 area of the configuration wizard, browse to or type the location of theStandard Parts folder. This location is commonly located on a system accessible to manyusers. It is suggested that you specify this location as a mapped location (for example,\\hsvnt407\STDParts, rather than a local drive mapped to that location.
