Educator of the Year and Ed-ucational Service Professional of the Year from each school were honored with a special Mexican-themed luncheon on Wednesday, May 15. Principals stood up to speak about the 22 honorees’ dedication to their schools and students, after which Superintendent Danny A. Ro-bertozzi presented each with a certificate and gift. The event was put together by a committee led by School No. 8 Principal Michelle Rodriguez and Supervisor of Student Services Annabell Louis, with generous support from the Linden Education Association and

Linden School Administrators and Supervisors Association. Guests enjoyed food donated by Chevys Fresh Mex, Meson Tropical, and

LINDEN PUBLIC SCHOOLS - SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

The Linden Board of Education unanimously approved a bud-get on Thursday, April 25, that calls for no tax increase on city residents. The budget also includes no new or existing debt. The total operating budget of $134,673,315

covers all educational, personnel and other spending for the 2019-20 school year. The budget is sup-ported by $30,940,458 in aid from the state, an increase of $3,668,890 over the 2018-19 school year. “I don’t know if it’s the first time

in history, but this is my 20th budget, and it’s the first time we’ve had a zero tax levy increase,” said Business Administrator Kathleen Gaylord, who prepared the budget for the board’s approval. Click here to read more.

Linden High School’s 109th Commencement Ceremony will be on June 21 at Tiger Stadium at Cooper Field.

McManus Principal Peter Fingerlin, paraprofessional Karen Kocienski, and Superintendent Danny A. Robertozzi.

The Linden High School NJROTC held a Change of Command ceremony on May 13, revealing the commanding officer for the 2019-20 school year, as well as the regimental staff, which will lead the unit through the next school year. Commanding Officer Cadet Capt. Gilbert Nolasco was relieved by junior Mario Rodriguez. The Change of Com-mand followed the annual awards cere-mony. The top honors of the night went to cadets Gladylise Mendez and Maurice Faulk, who were named Cadets of the Year. Faulk was also honored along with cadets Erik Hernandez, Onelvi Martinez and Andrew Lopez for their enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corps. Click here to read more and see video of ceremony.

NJROTC welcomes new cadet leadership

School No. 5 poet among topYoung Writers of Union County School No. 5 student Adriana Fer-nandez won first place among all fourth-graders in the “Young Writ-ers of Union County” poetry con-test celebrating Arbor Day. Adri-ana’s poem is titled “My Pear Tree” and centers around how much joy the tree brings her. “I tried to talk about how pretty the tree was,” she said. The contest was sponsored by

the Union County Board of Free-holders and Union County Shade Tree Advisory Board. The aim was to give students “an opportunity to obtain a greater understanding of Arbor Day by allowing them to portray the importance of trees in our natural environment and man-made landscapes.” Click here to read more.

Students at Soehl Middle School created an Autism Awareness Tree in the front lobby of the school to help raise understanding. Under the leadership of language arts teachers Jennifer Mac-Donald, Mackenzie Anderson and Jamie Pierson and student teacher Christina Muha, the students researched autism, learning about famous au-thors, inventors and mathe-maticians who were diagnosed with autism. They created puzzle pieces with statistics on autism, quotes, and informa-tion about how to be a friend to someone who has been diagnosed.

The “Make Cancer Disappear” magic and comedy show at McManus Middle School on May 3 raised over $4,700 for the families of two students fighting cancer. Magician Joe Holiday and comedian John Pizzi, who donat-ed their time and talents, amazed and delight-ed the audience, which included the guests of honor: School No. 1 third-grader Arion Mamudi, who is fighting osteosarcoma, and School No. 8 second-grader, Isabel Domin-guez, who is battling leukemia. The show was organized by School No. 8 and School No. 10 technology teacher Kim Kefalas, who is a breast cancer survivor. Click here to see the video.

A magical night to help two families

School No. 2 getsto see the view frominside a hot-air balloon Even after their trip to see a hot-air balloon in action got rained out on May 14, School No. 2 students wouldn’t let it dampen their spirits. Instead, repre-sentatives from RE/MAX brought their balloon into the school, where students learned about how the balloons fly, and got to explore the inside of one after it was blown up in the gym. Hands-on safety lessons for seniorsThe Linden Municipal Alliance and the Linden Police Department brought the Save a Life Tour to Linden High School on May 15 to urge seniors to be safe as they prepare for year-end celebrations of prom and graduation. Driving simulators and DWI goggles demonstrated for the students the dangers of drinking and driv-ing and texting behind the wheel. Click here to see video.

Three Linden High School senior athletes are being honored for excelling on the field of play as well as in the classroom. From left are Samuel Aristizabal-Sanchez, Brooke Beyer and Kyle Lipscomb. Beyer and Lipscomb were honored by the Union County Interscholastic Athletic Conference on May 22 at The West-wood in Garwood, and Aristizabal-Sanchez was honored by the New Jersey State Inter-scholastic Athletic Association on May 19 at the Pines Manor in Edison. “These three epit-omize the term scholar athlete,” said Athletic Director Steven Viana. “They share similar characteristics in that they are truly gifted athletes, but what strikes me the most is how well-rounded, humble, and respectful they are. We couldn’t ask for better representatives to carry the flag for Linden athletics.” Click here to read more.

Teacher flash mob pumps up School No. 8An inspiring speech by School No. 8 Princi-pal Michelle Rodriguez exploded into a staff flash mob on April 29, led by English as a Second Language teacher Eloy Delgado.
