THE ANNIVERSARY GALA offered an exciting conclusion to the school’s very special 150th

Anniversary year. Nearly 670 patrons and supporters of the Academy joined together at the Sheraton Hotel at Crown Center in downtown Kansas City to celebrate this important milestone in the history of St. Teresa’s Academy.

The evening held many special and unique moments, highlighted by videos sent in from alums throughout the world, ranging from the Class of 1948 to the Class of 2015. These alums shared with the audience their love for STA and a wish for a very happy 150th birthday. Alums were also invited on stage that evening to personally share

a glorious conclusion

to our 150th anniversary year

their story of St. Teresa’s Academy and how the school impacted their lives in pursuit of careers and passions.

One highlight of the evening was a performance from Quixotic Cirque Nouveau. Following the performance, gala attendees raised their paddles in support of the school’s endowment and financial aid. Through event sponsorship, underwriting, the annual raffle, donations, and the online auction, over $1,023,000 was raised.

Congratulations to Babette Macy and Jerry Bauers, this year’s lucky winners of the annual raffle. The winning ticket was sold by their daughter, sophomore Macy Bauers.

Attendees enjoyed a live performance by Quixotic Cirque

Nouveau, celebrating the school's history through video and dance.

Alums from throughout the world who were unable to attend the gala sent video well-wishes. Watch their videos on our website: stteresasacademy.org/alumnae. You can also find them on the STA Facebook page.

The video's over 17,000 views and 182 shares illustrate the life-long "sisterhood" that begins at STA and grows over a lifetime.

Special thanks to the following (l to r): Gala Co-Chairs Dave and Denise Schloegel along with Ryan and Katie Duffy, STA President Nan Bone, emcee and KSHB anchor Christa Dubill, Laura Coates Samualson and Henry (Hal) Kugeler, the great, great grandchildren of St. Teresa's Academy's first student, Laura Coates.

nan's note

WHAT AN REMARKABLE YEAR THIS HAS BEEN! As the year draws to a close, I can't help but be humbled by the incredible community of STA parents, alumnae and friends. You are rock stars. Your generosity and enthusiasm to secure the very best for this school has been phenomenal to see. Your efforts will help ensure future generations of young women have the opportunity to experience a superior STA education, one founded in the charisms of love of God and service to the dear neighbor the Sisters of St. Joseph so firmly value.

A TRIP TO REMEMBER. On June 21, 2016, twenty-two alums and friends of the Academy traveled to Lyon, France, to visit

the birthplace of the Sisters of St. Joseph, the founders of St. Teresa's Academy. The group toured southern France on a river cruise down the Saone and Rhone Rivers, exploring many fascinating cities and villages along the way. By the end of the trip, everyone had became great friends and all agreed it was a wonderful way to celebrate STA’s 150th birthday!

As I look forward to the coming new year, I am re-energized by the prospects of our pending Academy 150 Capital Campaign. This effort, highlighted later in this newsletter, focuses on providing new learning environments and enhanced curriculum for our young women, while securing funds to preserve the Windmoor campus and ensure the growth of our endowment. If we thought the year 2016 and our 150th anniversary was exciting, hold on to your seat. You're about to experience a fantastic future at STA!

capital campaign swings into full gear. More definitely

starts here!”

THANKS FOR FLYING WITH US

Nearly 250 persons arrived “on time” at the Airline History Museum on September 22 for the pre-gala party. The full in-flight service included unlimited beverages and barbecue provided by Woodyard Bar-B-Que. Passengers, including numerous alums, parents, past parents, and friends of the Academy, enjoyed touring the classic propeller airplanes on display and reconnecting with friends and family—all in celebration of the school’s 150th anniversary.

Thank you to event Co-chairs Katie and Ryan Duffy along with Denise and Dave Schloegel, along with the Pilot and Co-Pilot underwriters who sponsored the special evening. Their generosity, along with those who attended, will support scholarships and financial aid for current and future students of STA.

OFTEN TIMES, academic departments operate on

a zero budget basis, meaning the amount of funds needed to operate their labs and classrooms throughout the year equals the amount of money available within their budget. What it also means is that there are no additional funds available to further develop curiosities and explore new ideas and possibilities.

Science teacher Mary Montag knows this all too well. Fortunately, she has

developing creativity and confidence

benefits of WCG funds

discovered the Women’s Circle of Giving (WCG), a philanthropic organization of women who collaborate to advance the mission of St. Teresa’s Academy by funding needs that lie outside of the typical operating budget.

“I consider grants offered by the WCG as “dream funds.” These funds allow our kids to explore ideas and concepts beyond the four walls of our classroom...to see possibilities and try new things that make kids

excited about learning,” says Montag.

The WCG has funded numerous items for the Science Department over the years, in addition to grants that support all aspects of the STA education, including Campus Ministry, Fine Arts, Athletics, and more.

WCG members meet twice a year, once in the spring to vote on the distribution of funds and once in the fall to see how the funds were utilized. Any teacher or staff

member may apply for grant money prior to the spring meeting.

Please consider becoming a member of this worth-while organization who believes in the positive effects women’s education has on society today. Members under 35 can join for half-price

Join us for the March 30, 2017, spring meeting and see for yourself the difference this organization makes for the young women of STA.

Conceptual Physical Science students study how individual properties of elements react when combined with other elements often found in everyday foods. The Science Department is just one of many departments who benefit from the Women's Circle of Giving grants.

A CHANCE ENCOUNTER at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Mo., in

2013, with the historian for The Leon Day Foundation, Inc., in Baltimore, Md., has evolved into one of the most meaningful service projects for alumna, Michelle Freeman.

Growing up in Kansas City, Michelle developed a love of baseball and community service from her maternal grandparents. She remembers spending Saturday mornings volunteering with her grandmother and taking care packages to elderly residents who were sick and shut-in. Her grandfather taught her about Negro Leagues Baseball greats such as the legendary Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson.

The Leon Day Foundation, Inc., provided the perfect opportunity for

serving the dear neighbor

Michelle to serve in West Baltimore. The foundation preserves the legacy of National Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Leon Day and provides opportunities for kids to engage in baseball in West Baltimore. Although baseball is America’s past time, it is virtually non-existent in income-depressed neighborhoods. Further, the percentage of African-American players in major leagues baseball is significantly lower than in professional football and professional basketball. Baseball is an expensive sport.

The lack of sufficient funding is an obstacle that prevents many inner-city athletes from playing. Through Michelle’s leadership, the foundation has been successful in winning community grants to sponsor a youth league baseball team, underwriting a summer instructional baseball program

for a high school baseball team, and providing funds for kids to attend baseball camps.

“Baseball is all economics driven. If you don’t have the money to play, you can’t advance to the major leagues,” Freeman says. The foundation’s mission is to eliminate the barrier to access and create opportunities for kids in West Baltimore to engage in baseball.

Learn more about The Leon Day Foundation at www.leondayfoundation.

org. Michelle can be reached at [email protected].

“I have been afforded a lot of opportunities and want to give back in some way. I'm always finding ways to help others and create opportunities for others.”

ST. TERESA’S IS SETTING THE STANDARD for educating today’s young women in unparalleled

ways. However, there is still much work to be done. The women we are working to prepare—what we teach them, the beliefs we instill in them, and who they become when they leave us—are exactly what the world is starving for today.

hello future

shaping the next 150 years

For this reason, we are launching the Academy 150 Capital Campaign in January 2017. Watch your mailboxes in January as we share further information about this exciting campaign. Please consider answering the call of the Sisters of St. Joseph as they continue their mission to empower young women through a superior education anchored in Catholic faith.

windmoor’s original entrance

WHAT BETTER TIME than our 150th

anniversary year to commemorate the historic legacy of the Windmoor campus. Over 100 years ago following the construction of M&A, the Sisters created the school’s first entrance to campus along Main Street at 56th. This year, this sometimes overlooked entrance was updated with new landscaping and signage that recognizes it as the original entrance to the Windmoor campus. Stop by and admire it the next time you’re on campus.

1992

KATIE ACKERMAN BUCHANAN recently finished her role with Viacom at CMT in Nashville where she was the head of programming strategy and acquisitions. She also helped oversee feature film and series acquisitions for Nickelodeon, Nick at Nite, TeenNick, and TV Land with the Viacom senior team in New York. Katie recently accepted a new position working for A+E Networks in New York City where she'll oversee the program strategy and acquisitions for the FYI network. Prior to departing Nashville, Katie was awarded the 2016 “Women of Influence” Award given by the Nashville Business Journal. She'll be relocating to New York with her husband, Michael, and their two daughters, Scarlett and Lucille.

1995

ALICIA BAILEY STACY had an amazing year. Not only was it the 150th anniversary year for STA and her 20th class reunion, it was also one of her happiest moments watching her senior daughter, Elaina Elizabeth, in her cap and gown graduate from STA. They will now forever share the bond of STA sisterhood.

2006

LAURA KEARNS WALTON was married on October 17, 2015. She and her husband just moved back to Kansas City after living in Bedminster, NJ, for 16 months and in Chicago, IL, for 11 months. They are happy to be back home with friends and family and are very excited to be building a house in Olathe. She recently started with FSC Inc., cross training on the fire protection team and code consulting team.

2006

KATHERINE SCHILLING CLARK and her husband Christian welcomed their first child, Henry Joseph Clark, on December 19, 2015. After three years in Cambridge, Massachusetts, they now live in New York City.

2007

TRACY HADEN PETERSON was married to Geoffrey Peterson on December 19, 2015. All women in the bridal party were STA graduates so naturally a photo stop on the Quad was necessary. Tracy and her husband lived in

Dublin, Ireland, for two years prior to moving to Chicago last fall. Tracy currently teaches English as a Second Language at a charter high school on Chicago's south side.

DR. EMILY TUMMONS completed her Ph.D. in environmental engineering at Michigan State University in July and began working at Black & Veatch in Kansas City as a process engineer in the Water Treatment Group. Emily is giving back to the community by mentoring 5th grade students at many schools in the Kansas City metro area through the Black & Veatch/KCPT STEM Mentoring Program. Emily is excited to be a part of this program because it involves STA students who have the opportunity to learn from professional engineers and help lead hands-on, project based learning activities that focus on electricity, water, and structural design.

CHRISTINA FUERST HARRISON married Eric Harrison in August 2016 in Kansas City. They currently live in Washington, D.C.

THE 2016 ALUMNAE REUNION CELEBRATION was held on Saturday, October 8–a beautiful evening on the STA campus. The night began with Mass in the

M&A auditorium celebrated by Father Robert Stewart and accompanied by the STA Praise Band. Academy medals were presented to the Golden Girls from the Class of 1966 in honor of their 50-year class reunion.

More than 350 alums and guests enjoyed a buffet and cocktail reception in the Goppert Center. Classes in attendance spanned 75 years, from the Class of 1936 to the Class of 2011. Everyone enjoyed reminiscing, while many took advantage

of campus tours led by current and proud STA students. The strong legacy of St. Teresa’s Academy was certainly evident that night.

If you are in the classes of 1942, 1947, 1952, 1957, 1962, 1967 (50-year class), 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002, 2007 or 2012, mark your calendars for the Reunion Celebration on Saturday, October 7, 2017.

There will be a reunion planning meeting on Wednesday, March 8, 2017, at STA for all alums interested in helping organize their class in preparation for the event.

Peggy Gramlich Baker, Class of 1957, was recently honored at the Reunion Celebration. Peggy's story and her ac-ceptance speech can be found online.

AS YOU KNOW, LIFE GETS COMPLICATED. Often times, families at STA find themselves needing unexpected tuition support. On the eve of our 150th

anniversary year and during the 2016 Alumnae Reunion Celebration, STA introduced the first annual Give-A-Year Reunion Scholarship, designed to offer financial support to one deserving student. The scholarship was funded solely by alums from reunion class years and is one way all alums can pay forward their gift of an STA education to another young woman.

The funds raised during the Reunion Celebration in October

will be given to one incoming freshman with need in the fall of 2017.

Many thanks to all of the reunion classes who supported this new scholarship: 1946, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011, with special thanks to the Classes 1961 and 1966 with the highest percentage of giving. With each succeeding year, we hope to eventually raise enough funds to cover full tuition ($12,000) for one student. Keep up the good work! Together, you will change the life of a deserving young woman.

record coat drive

STUDENTS FROM THE STA SPIRIT and Social Justice Clubs wanted to help keep neighbors

in need warm this winter by collecting winter coats and jackets. To help bring awareness to this effort, they also thought it would be fun to set a Guinness World Record while doing so. And on Saturday, December 3, that is exactly what they did. Nearly 3,000 coats were collected in an eight hour time period for Kansas City's less fortunate. The coats will be distributed through Catholic Charities of Kansas City–St. Joseph, and the girls will have set a Guinness World Record for their efforts! Thank you to our parents and alums who made this accomplishment possible.

CROSS COUNTRY

Cross Country once again placed runners in the MSHSAA Class 4, State Cross Country Championships in Jefferson City, MO. This is the 28th consecutive year at least one STA runner will compete at State. Rose Crowe (middle) and Katie Donnellan (left) ran top-not races at the MSHSAA Class 4, Sectional Championships. Prior to Sectionals, Crowe, Donnellan and Addie Coppinger (right) were each named All-District runners.

This fall, STA was represented with State qualifiers in

cross country (state meet), golf (state meet), tennis (state quarterfinals) and volleyball (state final four). The softball team set the school record for the number of wins in a season, with their season ending to an eventual state qualifier.

GOLF

Congratulations to Bri Arello for her outstanding finish at the MSHSAA Class 2, State meet. After shooting a 94 the first day, she came back and shot an 89 the next day, including a chip-in for birdie on 16! Bri's finish is the best for any STA golfer since 2012. Prior to the State Championships, STA golf finished fourth as a team at the MSHSAA Class 2, District 7 Championships and qualified five players for the MSHSAA Class 2, Sectional 4 Championships.

VOLLEYBALL

The volleyball team made their second-straight appearance at the State Final Four in Cape Girardeau the end of October. Two of the three schools in pool play, Ozark and Lafayette Wildwood, have been to six-straight State final fours. The Stars faced Ozark in the consolation game. This was another outstanding year for the STA volleyball program and indicates the Stars will be State contenders for years to come.
