Today’s Meditation “If you choose you can keep the commandments,” Sirach tells us. God “has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand” (Sirach 15:15, 16). This is a great mystery: God does not control us so completely that we cannot choose our own path. We have certain boundaries,

of course, but no one but we can choose our way within those boundaries. In today’s reading from Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us of our freedom and our responsibility for our lives. He calls us to look beyond the words of the commandments, all the way to their meaning. Look beyond the adultery to the selfishness that poisons our love. Look beyond the murder to the anger that eats away at our compassion. Look beyond the perjured testimony to the lies and deception that drive our behavior. Our vocation is to choose life for ourselves, and to choose a path through our part of the world that helps make life possible and more abundant for others as well. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal funds more than 40 ministries in the area of charity, evangelization and worship. The greatest area that your donations are used is through charity to those in most need. The Bishop’s Annual appeal provides one third of all funding for Catholic Charities. Last year alone, they served over 68,500 individuals; many of these multiple times in a year. In addition to food, clothing, and housing, Catholic Charities provides baby supplies, adoption assistance and immigration services. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal will provide over $7 million in the upcoming year to help those in physical and spiritual need.

To make a gift, donate online at GivetoBAA.org. Bishop’s Annual Appeal pledge envelopes are also available in the Gathering Area on the Information Table. Please make sure to fill out in pen, not pencil. The envelopes are pre-addressed and ready to place in the mail. If you need help, please call Rebecca in the office at 910-675-2336.

These excerpts each week come from the book Pillar of Fire Pillar of Truth.

Matrimony

Most people are called to the married life rather than to the religious life or to life as a single person. Through the sacrament of matrimony God gives special graces to help married couples with life’s difficulties, especially to help them raise their children as loving followers of Christ. Marriage always involves three parties; the bride, the groom, and God. When two Christians receive the sacrament of matrimony, God is with them, witnessing and blessing their marriage covenant. For Catholics, God does this through the priest or deacon who presides at the wedding as the Church’s witness. A consummated sacramental marriage is permanent; only death can break it (Mark 10:1-12, Rom.7:2-3,1 Cor. 7-11). This holy union is a living symbol of the unbreakable relationship between Christ

CEMETERY RULES FOR FLOWERS and WREATHS

All Flower arrangements from the Christmas season should by now have been removed. Also, please ensure that all artificial flowers are placed in a metal container or PVC pipe reinforced with Styrofoam to prevent the wind from blowing the arrangement around. If you would like to purchase a plastic vase that is easily secured in the ground please contact Charlene Pete at 910-675-9780. If the Christmas flower arrangements have not been removed we may need to have them removed for you. Thank you!
