THE BREAD OF LIFE In the Gospel for the last several weeks we have been hearing the Sixth Chapter of the Gospel according to Saint John. We often call it the Bread of Life Discourse because Jesus is speaking about Himself as the Bread of Life. This means He is the one who sustains and nourishes us. We experience being sustained by Christ in dif-ferent ways, of course. One way is by true catholic teaching. The culmination of Him nourishing us is in the Eu-charist, the Bread of Life. It’s one of the reasons He commands us to go to church on Sunday, because when we participate in Mass, we receive Him. Even if for some reason we are not able to receive Communion, we still are fed by Him at church on Sunday. We should always be ready to receive Him in the Eucharist, especially by go-ing to Confession on a regular basis. We want our soul to be ready to receive Him. If we are not ready, He might think we don’t really believe or that we don’t think He needs a proper place. He tells us: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

SOME PEOPLE FOUND HIS TEACHING TOO DIFFICULT Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.” Jesus was preparing his listeners for the teaching, articulated fully at the Last Supper, that He is truly present in the Eucharist. And when some heard this, they decided to stop being His followers. Jesus did not change His teaching because His followers had a hard time believing. In fact, he “doubles down” on His teach-ing. He turns to the ones who had been with Him from the start of His ministry and asks them if they will also leave Him. Peter, the representative of that group (the Apostles) responds for them and says: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” To me, this is a life changing answer and one that is so help-ful. Peter professed belief in Jesus, even when he didn’t completely grasp every aspect of His teaching. Peter was a humble man.

SOMETIMES IT’S WHAT YOU DON’T SAY

For me, what's so helpful is what Peter does not say. He doesn’t say: “Yes, Lord, I understand the whole thing. I completely get it. You are asking me to eat your Body and drink your Blood, and that makes perfect sense to me. And therefore, I will follow you.” No. Peter rather places his trust in the Person of Jesus, even when he does not completely understand His teaching. This should be helpful to us. Sometimes we do not completely under-stand the teachings of Jesus through His Church. His teachings and those of the Church are one. It's not like Je-sus teaches one thing and the church teaches something contrary. In fact, Jesus teaches us these days through the Church. We should be careful of an attitude that proposes we can believe in Christ, but not His Church. That would be insulting to Him because He and His Church are one, and He established the Church to be His teacher on earth in these last days. It’s very freeing when we trust and believe in Christ through His church, even when we find a specific teaching difficult. I have experienced this in my own life. I found it requires humility. It also requires the smarts neces-sary to acknowledge that there are others who know better than we do, even when they appear to be a countersign of the very teachings they profess.

God Bless, Fr. Dan

MOTHER TERESA EUCHARISTIC MINISTRY TO THE HOMEBOUND

Bringing Church to the Home Our Homebound Ministry focuses care on those who can no longer attend Church service. Many times, the circumstances of one’s health will prevent individuals from enjoying their customary fellowship of their church family. The Mother Teresa Ministry to the Homebound attempts to “bring the church home” to you, by remind-ing you that you are not alone and that you remain a part of our family through sharing in the Eucharist. Father Hennessey, Father Hocurscak, and members of their Mother Teresa Ministry team are eager to bring the Eucharist to the sick and homebound of Saint Agnes and Saint Rose Parishes, and to offer empathic support, a listening ear, prayer and reflection. If you, or someone you know, would like to arrange a visit, please contact Debbie Jones, 978-774-1958 or 978-887-5505 or email [email protected] OR Cynthia Johnson, coordinator Mother Teresa Eucharistic Ministry [email protected]

PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION CARDS AVAILABLE NOW! Each week we have several hundred people watch Mass on our Livestream who otherwise would not be able to partici-pate. We are very thankful that parishioners from Saint Ag-nes and Saint Rose parishes, and from all over, can take ad-vantage of this resource. For those who are not able to attend in person and receive the Eucharist each day or each week at Mass, the opportunity to ask Jesus for Spiritual Communion exists. We have some prayer cards with the prayer for Spir-itual Communion available for any person who would like one. The prayer is written here also. Please contact us at the parish office if you would like a prayer card or know of a pa-rishioner who would appreciate it. PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to re-ceive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment re-ceive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and I unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen PRAYER REQUESTS To send Father Dan Hennessey a personal and confiden-tial prayer request, please see our website to fill out prayer request form or go to https://agnesandrose.org/connect/prayer-requests

THE BREAD OF LIFE DISCOURSE

This is the final weekend that we hear from chapter 6 of John's gospel with Jesus speaking of himself as the bread of life. We started with the feeding of the 5,000 from 5 barley loaves and 2 fish. Then we found the people following Jesus wherever he went and were ready to make him king. Then Jesus starts to describe himself as the bread of life and this is where things start to break down. Many in the crowd were hoping that Jesus would give them food to satisfy their physical hunger for the rest of their lives so that they would have one less thing to wor-ry about. Instead, Jesus says do not worry about physical food, but to eat the spiritual food of him as the bread of life. At this, the people waver in hearing Jesus speak this way. They interpreted Jesus' words as cannibalism. Which was strictly forbidden under Mosaic law. Jesus was of course speaking of himself as the bread of life in what we would come to know as the Eucharist. Jesus was trying to get his hearers to make him the center of their lives to feed on his goodness as the source of our goodness in life. As a result of this teaching, we hear how many fall away from Jesus and even leave for their former way of life. At that, Jesus does not back away from what he said, but rather holds to it and even asks his closest disciples if they want to leave too? When we look at the Catholic faith today, there are some moral teachings of the Church that are unpopular in our culture. But the priests and bishops of the Church do not make up the teachings and rules of the moral teachings of the Church. Rather, we simply hand down the teachings that Jesus gave us. Thus, we say that we do not have the authority to change the moral teachings of the Church because they come from God. That does not mean that we will not struggle with some teaching of the Church in our life, but if we keep Jesus in the center of our life, even in the midst of our struggles, he does promise to walk with us in life and to lead us to a greater understand-ing of his teachings in our life.

God Bless, Fr. Karlo

MEET OUR SEMINARIANS FUTURE PRIEST OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF BOSTON

REV. MR. ROBERT LEBLANC, JR.WILL BE ORDAINED TO THE PRIESTHOOD

REV. MR. ROBERT LEBLANC, JR. CITY: YORK STATE: ME HIGH SCHOOL: LIBERTYVILLE HIGH SCHOOL - LIBERTYVILLE, IL SEMINARY ATTENDING: ST. JOHN’S SEMINARY CLASS YEAR: FOURTH THEOLOGY

What are some of the factors that led to your decision to enter the seminary and discern the question of a vocation to the priesthood? I discerned the question of a vocation to priesthood for three years prior to applying to seminary. The most important factor that led me to my decision to enter St. John's was the witness of several very holy and joyful priests in my life. None of them put any pressure on me to come to seminary, rather, they lived out their vocations with joy and simply let me know that priesthood might be an option for me. Who are some of the people who influenced your decision to enter the seminary? What is it about them that assisted you? Other than the priests I've already mentioned, my mom has influenced my decision the most because she passed the gift of faith along to me, and through Christ, has helped me tremendously on my faith journey. My dad as well has always support-ed me and provided me with everything I've needed in my life. Without their love and support, my decision to enter semi-nary would not have been possible. What would you say is the role of prayer in the life of a seminarian and what effect does it have on one's ability to see God's call? The role of prayer is a vital element to the life of a seminarian. Prayer keeps me close to Christ at all times, and the only way to see His call is to stay close to Him in prayer. What advice would you give to a man who thinking about his vocation and is considering that God may be calling him to be a priest? Be not afraid. Don't run from anything you feel God is asking of you. Stay close to our Lord in prayer. Be open to His will and seek to serve Him in all that you do. What do you like most about being a seminarian? My favorite thing about being a seminarian is this incredible opportunity to learn more about the richness of my Catholic faith in class everyday. What do you think is the greatest challenge facing a man who is considering the seminary? The greatest challenge a man considering seminary faces is simply his own willingness to do what every Christ asks of him. In the very moment when I truly meant it when I told Him, "Lord, I will do whatever you ask of me," I knew exactly what He was asking of me. What do you think is the best way to encourage vocations to the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Boston? The best way to encourage vocations in the Archdiocese of Boston is for priests and seminarians to live the Catholic faith prayerfully and joyfully, to be witnesses of Christ's love to everyone. What are some of your hobbies or pastimes? What are some of the things you like to do in your "free" time? I love sports. In any free time that I have at the seminary, I play sports and watch Premier League soccer on television. Other hobbies include: reading, traveling, Broadway musicals, skiing, and photography. What are some of your favorite authors/books/movies? I don’t have any favorite authors, books, or movies, because I enjoy watching and reading what other people think is good. The most recent book I finished was “Lumen Fidei” and my favorite series was Harry Potter. As far as movies go, I love Star Wars.
