Parish Staff & Committee Chairs
Dear Parish Family,
We may be tempted to gloss over the most startling one-liners passed down to us from Jesus such as
the one that closes today’s Gospel: “None of you can be my disciple if he does not renounce all his
possessions.”
The statement reflects that basic human wisdom which tells us that “the corruptible body burdens the soul and the earthen she lter
weighs down the mind that has many concerns.” The issue, then, is true freedom, the ability to follow Onesimus (Second Reading) out
of slavery. The other issue involved here is true worship, the question of priority in our lives: who or what is more important. God or
our possessions?
Today’s liturgy encourages us to put God first, to long for God “like a deer that longs for running streams,” and to recognize that “in
every age, O Lord, you have been our refuge.” Moreover, it is not evil to want God to prosper the work of our hands. It is evil to
make a god of creatures and to replace worship of the true God with worship of worldly possessions. What is discipleship according to
Jesus? Discipleship is not just one more hobby or extracurricular activity. Discipleship is why we do what we do, mindful of the costs it
brings.
What Jesus commands is prioritizing him as the source of our life, and as its ultimate end. It is making our love for him the ordering
principle of everything else we do and how we use the things we possess.

September 8, 2019 / Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
As part of a 1935 initiative to recognize and celebrate the gift that catechists give to their parish
communities by volunteering their time for the education of children, the Church began what we
know today as Catechetical Sunday. On Catechetical Sunday, we come together as both a parish
and Church community to acknowledge the dedication of those who serve as catechists in our
parish family. On Catechetical Sunday, parents and guardians are also honored because they are
the true first catechists, sharing the Catholic faith with their families. Catechetical Sunday is an
opportunity for all Catholics to rededicate themselves to the mission of handing on the faith and
being a witness to the Gospel as community of faith. The day also provides an opportunity for us
to consider ways we are witnesses for Jesus Christ ourselves.
We will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 15 at the 11:00am Mass. Please join us.
Faith Formation
A Prayer for My Catechist
Thank you for your good work
Your words, your faith, your teaching;
May I grow to share what I have learned through you
And the Word of God
To turn the hearts of many
Toward the Lord
Amen.
Here is an idea for you to thank your child’s catechist:
Make a card for your catechist by using the prayer to
the right. Have your child decorate it.
As a family, decide some prayers you will say for your
catechist and make a “spiritual bouquet” for him/her.
Bring the card to your child’s teacher the next time
you see them.

September 12: Called out of the World
One of the first things Bishop Barron will teach us in this session is that
the Greek root word for church, ekklesia, means “to be called out of”;
that is, at church, during every Mass, we are called out of the world into
God’s Kingdom. This episode will focus specifically on the Entrance
Procession and the Introductory Prayers.

Parish News
September 8, 2019 / Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Our Parish Hospitality St. Rita in the Desert has always been known for its
welcoming heart. Just as the cowboys, ranch hands, and families
settling this area came from miles around to celebrate Eucharist
and to share their stories from the last week, we too, are called
be a family and Minister of Hospitality. That is partly why our
congregation continues to spend time before Mass sharing time in
conversation with folks we know and welcoming those sitting
near us whom we have not met. Another way we can be
welcoming at Mass is by moving to the center of the pew so that
those who come after us can easily come in and find a seat
without climbing over others. This also gives us the opportunity
to welcome them as they sit down beside us. We invite our
community to consider “scooting in” and then reaching out in
welcome to those who sit down next to you.
St. Rita’s Guild News Our monthly meeting wil l be held Wednesday,
September 11 at 5:30pm in the hall.
New members are welcome to come and see where
they can find their calling! “Membership” is open to any adult,

Our primary focus is serving the St. Rita’s Community.
LEARN TO MAKE ROSARIES St. Rita’s Rosary Makers resume meetings on the
second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Tuesday,
September 10 we will meet right after 8:00am Mass (about
8:30am) in the Verhagen Building. Our group provides
rosaries for St. Rita’s ministries and sends rosaries to
world-wide missions. Our goal is to advance the devotion
of the rosary and our Blessed Mother as she leads people
to Jesus. If you don’t know how to make mission (cord)
rosaries we’d love to teach you. Just come on over and
check out this fun group.
E-mail Irene at [email protected] with any questions.
Sewing Angels The Sewing Angels are heading back to their ironing boards and sewing machines, meeting every Tuesday at 9:00am in the hall. In

prayer line, or if you would like to participate in prayer, please
contact Leta Davis at 647-3572.
