A Note From Fr. Patrick Welcome (Back) Students! For more than 50 years, St. Paul Catholic Center has served as the spiritual home for Catholic (and many other) IU students. We exist because of and for the students of IU. We are grateful for your presence. It is my sincerest hope that no matter what the circumstances our world presents us that all stu-dents, Catholics particularly, are known and loved members of the St. Paul Community. Our student community has grown by leaps and bounds the past few years because we prioritize the person in front of us, his/her journey, and the gift of accompanying each other to encounter Jesus. I am so happy you have found us and even more excited to walk with you these next however many years you are with us. However, this year, to be sure, is certainly the most challenging and different of our 50+ years of serving students. We as a community each share the responsibility this year not only for outreach and welcome, but also the added responsibility of social-distancing, face-covering, and all the other neces-sities of building and maintaining a safe and responsible community in a time of pandemic. These are interesting, challenging times, but thanks be to God for them! He made us for great-ness and for eternity and the only way from here to there is through the Cross. Together, as a commu-nity of faith, hope, and love, we can emerge from this changed for the better, for the greatest good.

Catholic Social Teaching Mini-Course Fr. Dennis will be leading a six-week online faith formation class on Catholic Social Teaching. The course will meet September 16, 23, 30, and October 7,14, 21. This course will be geared toward adults but it would be suitable for those 13 and older. Catholic Social Teaching is often described as the Church’s “best kept secret.” In an election year, during a pandemic, as we are having difficult conversations and protests on issues of racial jus-tice, immigration, and so many other issues, our Catholic faith offers a treasure chest of resources that help to form us to respond as Christ in the world. Fr. Dennis has worked extensively in areas of social justice throughout his priesthood. Conse-quently, he brings a wonderful range of experiences to this topic which will serve to benefit those who participate. If you would like more information, please contact Fr. Dennis ([email protected]).

Praying for Each Other In her book, Start with Jesus: How Everyday Disciples Will Renew the Church, Julianne Stanz writes, “If Eucharist is the heart of parish life, then prayer is the heartbeat. Prayer is the food and fuel of missionary activity.” During these tumultuous times, we can build the Church and even strengthen it through prayer. I hope you will join me in daily prayer for the needs of each member of this community and invite the Ho-ly Spirit to enlighten and enliven your hearts to be the person the world needs right now. Sincerely yours in Christ, Fr. Patrick

Welcome to the Church!

During a time of prayer on Sunday or while viewing the Mass on TV or online, the faithful

are encouraged to make an act of Spiritual Com-munion. This beautiful devotional practice in the Church is a real source of grace in Com-

munion with our Lord. Below is an example of a prayer for Spiritual Communion.

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love you above all things, and I desire to re-ceive you into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacra-mentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and

unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you.

Amen.

Parish & Community News

We are happy to announce a new Dominican Laity chapter, Mary Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, was received into the Dominican Laity on July 18th, 2020 at St. Paul Catholic Center. The members received include Jennifer Faris, Mi-chael Faris, Robert Kravchuk, Paul Marion, Michael Ware, William Schwab and Mary Sue Veerkamp-Schwab. The core group, started in 2016, evolved and grew, with the guidance of the St Paul’s Dominican com-munity, and by following the Dominican charisms of prayer, study and apostolate. Together they strive to live the “evangelical life,” in the spirit of the Beati-tudes as laid out in the Dominican Rule. Through this community, members have experi-enced the true friendship and the genuine warmth of Christ’s presence in each other while sharing and deepening our faith. “The Dominican Laity is a pow-erful spiritual group, grounded in the apostolic spirit of St. Dominic…professing [that is, carrying into practice] the evangelical life as adapted to our lay state.” says Mary Sue Schwab. “We study, discuss, and drink wine! It’s the best of all worlds!” According to Jennifer Faris, “Being received into the order has been a blessing, this is now a real part of my life and pushes me to pursue study and contem-plation even more.” Michael Ware relates, “For me, I finally have a port in the Catholic Church where I can drop anchor. When I knelt to receive the Scapular and Fr. Justus’ hand on my shoulder, I felt Dominic embracing me as one of his children; my mother was in joyful tears. St. Mother Theodore Guerin has always re-minded me to put myself in God’s Providence, and my hope is that, by being a Lay Dominican, I will be able to reach out to young adults who don’t feel welcomed by the Church. Praise be Jesus and Mary!” “Being received as a Lay Dominican was an amaz-ing experience. I feel now that I am a part of an or-ganization that will help me become a better Catho-

lic. I hope to live my life in prayer, study and minis-tering in the world while being a part of the Domini-can community,” says Michael Faris. Paul Marion adds, “Many years ago, my parents took me to church to give me to God. It has been a long trip but the Lord has guided me along the way. Becoming a Dominican is a big step, taking me home.” To Bill Schwab, it is an opportunity not to be missed. “St. Dominic famously exhorted us to not hoard, but sow the seed. In a world that so desper-ately needs spiritual revitalization, how can we avoid his words? The life of a Lay Dominican gives us the opportunity to make our own humble answer to Dominic’s call.” Whether married or single, Lay Dominicans enrich the Dominican Community here at St Paul’s and the Dominican Family throughout the world. They invite you to join and share a passion for the Truth, love of prayer, and apostolic zeal.
