In our first reading [Deuteronomy 4:32-34.39-40] Moses challenges his people to appreciate the working of God in their lives. He reminds them of the fact that God had taken them from among the nations and made them his own people. He suggests further that because of this selection they should know that God is ‘God indeed’. The Trinity tells us of an ever-loving God who is Creator, Redeemer and Empowerer – a God who is love and who invites us to share in this community of love. I draw your attention to an icon painted by the 15 th century artist Russian Rublev, and which is hanging on the wall of the Cathedral Hall, above the stage. It depicts a scene taken from Genesis 18:1-15 when Abraham and Sarah are visited by the three angels announcing the birth of Isaac. It shows the angels sitting around a table. Each figure in the icon represents a Person of the Trinity. In the foreground is an empty space. Rublev painted it in such a way that, in meditating on this icon, we are drawn into the symbolism of the icon - challenged to take up the empty place at table with the Trinity, and so become one with God in this community of love. Sunday, 27 May 2018 The Most Holy Trinity Year B

From the Dean’s Desk

Dear Friends,

We have just completed the Easter celebrations

with the great solemnity of the outpouring of the

Spirit at Pentecost last week. Today and next

Sunday we are presented with two enormous

mysteries of our Catholic faith: the Trinity and the Eucharist (The

Body and Blood of Christ). Both of these celebrations challenge

us not so much to a full understanding of their meaning, but of the

appreciation and significance that they should have in our spiritual

lives.

This Sunday our liturgy provides us with what must be one of the

most difficult of all aspects of our faith – that of the Trinity. It

challenges us to recognise our relationship with God rather than

our understanding of God. The Trinity is a mystery that can leave

us a little baffled as we struggle with terms such as co-equal,

consubstantial, one substance, one God, three Persons.

Thankfully the readings for today’s liturgy allow us some

knowledge of the life of the Triune God, since they speak to us of

how God has made himself known to us throughout Salvation

history.

In our first reading [Deuteronomy 4:32-34.39-40] Moses

challenges his people to appreciate the working of God in their

lives. He reminds them of the fact that God had taken them from

among the nations and made them his own people. He suggests

further that because of this selection they should know that God is

‘God indeed’. And because of this they need to ‘keep his laws

and commandments’ so that they and their children may prosper.

This is an image of a God who journeys with his people, guiding

them and instilling in them his laws and ways.

In the second reading [Romans 8:14-17] we have Paul reminding

us of the fact that through the work of the Spirit we have been

called children of God and therefore we can pray to God as

‘Abba! Father’. This fact is certainly reinforced through the

teaching of Jesus, who showed us the intimate and close

relationship that he had with his Father and beckons us to follow in

this way. The Gospel reading [Matthew28:16-20] reminds us of a

God who commissions us to minister in his name (Father, Son and

Holy Spirit) and who will always be present in our lives: ‘Know

that I am with you always, until the end of time.’

The Church reminds us that the Trinity is ‘the central mystery of

the Christian faith and life’ [Catechism of the Catholic Church

# 234], and yet we need to remember the fact that it was most

probably the first prayer that was taught to us as we learnt to bless

ourselves in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the

Holy Spirit. The Trinity tells us of an ever-loving God who is

Creator, Redeemer and Empowerer – a God who is love and

who invites us to share in this community of love. I draw your

attention to an icon painted by the 15th century artist Russian

Rublev, and which is hanging on the wall of the Cathedral Hall,

above the stage. It depicts a scene taken from Genesis 18:1-15

when Abraham and Sarah are visited by the three angels

announcing the birth of Isaac. It shows the angels sitting around a

table. Each figure in the icon represents a Person of the Trinity.

In the foreground is an empty space. Rublev painted it in such a

way that, in meditating on this icon, we are drawn into the

symbolism of the icon - challenged to take up the empty place at

table with the Trinity, and so become one with God in this

community of love. Am I prepared to take up that invitation?

Pope Francis has approved the Australian Bishops’ decision to hold a Plenary Council in Australia in 2020 and 2021. It is a significant moment for the Church in Australia to make decisions about the future. To prepare the agenda for the Plenary Council, all of God’s people are invited to reflect on the question: “What do you think God is asking of us in Australia at this time?” Find out more about the Plenary Council 2020 at the new website, now online: www.plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au

First Holy Communion - Sunday 3 June 9.30am Mass To encourage participation of all

members of our parish family in liturgy

in the parish, Family Mass is celebrated

on Sundays at the 9.30am Mass. At this

Mass, on 3 June, a number of children of the parish will receive

the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the very first time. Students

and teachers from St Patrick’s primary school will lead the singing.

It is hoped that this will be a great way of encouraging young

members of our parish to actively participate in parish liturgies

and other activities.

As in previous years the Cathedral reaches near capacity for both

parking and seating. Please leave plenty of time for both.

Change of Weekday Mass Time from 2 July Jury is in. Majority voted for the new Mass time of 6.30am on

weekdays. 92 voted Yes and 42 voted No. While we try to be

inclusive to everyone, sometimes change is needed to reflect

changes beyond our control. I do hope you will all be able to

attend the 6.30am Mass starting from 2 July.

Thank you for your input.

Do You Attend 9.30am Mass on Sundays? If the answer is yes, you may able to fulfil a ministry without too much effort. We are looking for approximately four people to hand out the collection bags during Mass. Please don’t be shy - it’s not too difficult a job. These collections help support the Diocese (1st collection) and the Parish (2nd collection) to maintain and continue their works in the community and parish. If you are able to help please call David on 0411 297 581.

Novena to Mary Full of Grace

When Thursday, 31 May 2018 Where Blessed Sacrament Chapel Time 7.00pm - 8.00pm

Please join us We will pray the Rosary’s MYSTERIES OF GLORY along with Scripture reflections, meditation and hymns.

Enquiries: Silvana Rechichi: 0478 510 324 or Marian Polizzi 02 9630 4019 or 0418 8730.

First Friday Devotions Are held in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel on the first Friday of the month from 6.30pm-7.30pm. The First Friday Devotions are a set of Catholic devotions to especially recognise the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and through it offer reparations for sins. In the visions of Christ reported by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century, several promises were made to those people who practiced the First Fridays Devotions, one of which included final perseverance.
