St Michael’s Collegiate is renowned for its commitment to the performing arts. The School of Performing Arts (SPA) is a specialist program offering talented students in Years 7 to 12 a high calibre performing arts experience. The role of SPA is to help students develop as communicative artists. We aim for our students to be instilled with the dedication and understanding to reach within themselves to affect and move audiences. Year 7 SPA - Foundation Skills Students in Year 7 who are accepted into the SPA Program undertake a specialised training program that focusses on intensive skills development across dance, drama and singing. Delivery 1 x double lesson per week for 1 semester Learning Outcomes Students will: Gain specialist training in dance, drama and singing Participate in master classes with visiting and local industry professionals Have the opportunity to participate in an interstate trip to see a major musical production Compete in the City of Hobart Eisteddfod Present a showcase concert of their work at the end of Semester 1 The School of Performing Arts is located in the McNeill Performing Arts Centre. Years 8 to 12

SPA - Advanced Performance Skills

Students in Years 8 to 12 who are accepted into the SPA Advanced Performance

course will undertake intensive training in an area of Principal Study: Voice,

Drama, Dance or Instrumental. This course is designed to prepare students to

audition for a wide range of specialist performing arts schools, conservatoriums

and other courses at tertiary level. It will include solo performance work,

ensemble work, master classes and rehearsals for special events.

In addition, students also select from a range of ‘Associate Studies’ which

will be offered in the single period timetabled each week. Each unit runs for a

period of 1 term and students are encouraged to choose from a wide variety of

units during their time in the SPA program.

Delivery

1 x double lesson and 1 x single lesson all year (3 lessons per week in total)

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

• Gain specialist training in dance, drama, singing or instrumental

• Participate in master classes with visiting and local industry professionals

• Have the opportunity to participate in an interstate trip to see a major

musical production

• Compete in the City of Hobart Eisteddfod

• Perform in relevant SPA concert and performance evenings

• Perform in the Senior School Musical (every second year)

Showreel

At the end of each year, students in Year 10 will be given the opportunity to compile a showreel that highlights the skills gained in the SPA course. They may utilise footage taken of themselves performing,andcanarrangetofilmthemselvesdemonstrating any additional skills which they wish to include. If students choose to continue in the SPA program in Years 11 and 12 then they may defer the making of their showreel until their

finalyear.
