ST. MARY & ST . BONIFACE CATHOLIC CHURCHES
I may have been awarded the Miami County Senior Citizen Award,
but I didn’t do it alone. There were always wonderful, caring
individuals that made it possible for me to attend all the volunteer opportunities and to work with these groups. I want to thank the
many people that called, sent a text or card, and those who saw me
and said congratulations. I appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Most of all, I want to show my appreciation to my family and friends for being my taxi service. Thanks to Gretchen Roeth and
my daughter Cheryl Stiefel-Francis for nominating me.
Memories of my volunteer work go back a lot of years. I have fond
memories like helping once a month head cook Bernice Lewis serve lunch to the students at Piqua Catholic School. We all worked hard, but it was always a joy. My
son Craig worked for Lehman Catholic High School and asked for help. The most gratifying was
working with the late and beloved Nancy Wiford. A few nights each year, we would get on the phone
and sell tickets for the school’s Harvest Auction. Who could say no to Nancy?
Former Police Chief Wayne Willcox enlisted my late husband Paul and me to help form a neighbor-
hood organization. The North Parks volunteers were some of the hardest-working people I know. We
prepared homes to paint and painted them. We mowed grass at abandoned houses, installed roofs on city park shelters, sold mulch and used the proceeds to purchase playground improvements for Das
and Kiwanis parks. God bless each one of these hard workers. Unfortunately age, relocations and
deaths have reduced our membership and projects. If there are residents that want to revive our
efforts, call the City of Piqua Parks department at 778-2051, and they’ll get in touch with me. It is
very rewarding; come join us.
Ruth Koon offered me the chance to help form Friends of the Piqua Parks. We were able to secure the
501 (c)(3) for the group, then raise funds to erect the statue of William Pitsenbarger and improve the
McKinley Avenue park entrance. We are currently adding more trees and aiding the Four Seasons
Garden Club to beautify Das Park. Thank you, Ruth, it continues to be a “labor of love.”
I always enjoy the City Wide Clean-Up, but being 81 years old with some
leg problems has made it necessary to bow out of helping this year.
The YWCA is another love of mine. Leesa Baker makes it possible to help in so many ways. I always say the YW is Piqua’s best-kept secret. It is
great for youngsters and women of all ages and membership is affordable.
Visit the YW, you might like it. I sure do.
The Piqua Chamber of Commerce, United Way, different City of Piqua committees, Piqua Catholic School’s Dollars for our Scholars, Taste of the
Arts, youth and school sports teams, etc., have filled my life with much
pleasure.

St. Mary Altar Society
St. Mary Altar Society hosted the Combination Dinner with St. Mary and St. Boniface
Ladies in the NSC Cafeteria on April 20. A delicious meal and great music was enjoyed by
all. The society was also in charge of a very successful Cake Booth at the St. Mary Church Festival. Thanks to everyone for your wonderful food donations. The next business meeting
will be on September 11. Further details will be in the church bulletin
St. Boniface/St. Mary Adult Faith Formation Commission
Past activities:
Lenten Retreat: Fr. Ben Luedtke presented a
retreat on March 26-29. His topics were “Time
and Eternity,” “Forgiveness,” “The Holy
Eucharist,” and “the Blessed Virgin Mary and the
Cross.” All were well attended.
Feast of Our Lady of Fatima: In honor of the
100th anniversary of our Lady’s appearance to
three Portuguese children at Fatima, Portugal,
parishioners were invited to pray the rosary at
St. Mary on Monday, May 15th. Afterwards the
video Fatima: A Message of Hope was shown in the North Street Campus cafeteria. The video is
available at the parish office for interested parishioners to borrow.
Feast of Pentecost: In honor of Pentecost, parishioners wore red in the honor of the Fire of the
Holy Spirit that came upon the Disciples at the first Pentecost 1,984 years ago and nametags with
their Confirmation names. Also the churches were decorated with red balloons.
Future activities:
Faith Offering: Beginning on September 27 for seven weeks, parishioners will participate in a
study group using the DVD Untold Blessing, Three Paths to Holiness. From Bishop Robert
Barron’s “Word on Fire,” Bishop Barron paints a beautiful and mysterious image of what it takes to
be a follower of Jesus Christ. Two sessions, an afternoon and an evening, will be offered at the
Downing Street Campus.
Christ Renews His Parish: Women and men of Team Four are now in formation for
the next CRHP retreats to be held at the Downing St. Campus at no cost to
participants. This is a great opportunity to deepen your faith and get to know fellow
parishioners. The women’s retreat will be November 4-5, 2017. The men’s retreat
will be January 20-21, 2018. For questions contact Ann Bradl (937-329-0897) for the
women’s and Fr. Tom Bolte at the parish office (773-1327 or 773-1656) for the
men’s.
Missionary presentation: In conjunction with the Mission Committee, the AFF will host a potluck
dinner after the 5:00 PM July 15th Mass for visiting missionary, Fr. John Converset, in the
cafeteria of the North Street Campus.
Parish Activities
Fr. Ben with members of Adult Faith Formation Commission.
Coffee and Doughnuts: Will resume in September after the 9:00 and
11:00 AM Masses. From September through May, this event is hosted
by various parish organizations, coordinated by the AFF, and funded by
our parishes’ Family Life groups. Anyone wishing to host, please
contact Barb Kohl (773-9205).
The Adult Faith Formation Commission is comprised of members from
both St. Boniface and St. Mary parishes: Ann Koehl, Barb Kohl
(chairperson), Jim Niswonger, Cathy Oda, Tim Pawlaczyk, Nancy
Peltier, Gloria Stonerock, Chuck Tyler, Julie Tyler, Bill Wattercutter,
Noreen Wendeln, Diane Mengos and Fr. Bolte. Anyone interested in
being a part of this commission is welcome. Questions concerning any
of our activities, please contact Barb Kohl.
St. Boniface/St. Mary Mission Committee
The Mission Rummage Sale will be coming up soon -- on Saturday, July 8 and
Sunday, July 9!! If you have any items to donate please call Don Stonerock at
773-2400 to have them picked up or take them to Piqua Store N’ Lock; go to
the office and ask in which unit to put the items.
We are asking for HELP to set up, tear down, and
work some hours of the sale. This has become a
HUGE project for us, and we need many people to help us. We feel that if we don't get the commit-
tee are getting up in years, and we need adults and
young people to help. We only have two days to set up and one day to tear down. Please call Don Stonerock or the parish office
if you can help. The hours needed will be beginning at 8:00 a.m. on July 6 &
7. The hours needed for help with the sale are 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on July 8 and 7:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on
July 9. Please pray for the success of this project, and that it may continue.
In October, we will have the annual Fall Mission Raffle. More details on this later in the year. Thanks to all
the people who support our Mission Committee.
We would truly like to see more people join our group. You will find that we have a very good, hard working
group. Our meetings usually are on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. and only last from 1/2—1 hour. Look in the bulle-
tin for our meetings
Charismatic Mass Celebration
Join us in the joyful celebration of the special Charismatic Mass on the first Monday of
each month, beginning at 7:30pm. This mass gives us the opportunity to "raise our hands
and voices to the Lord our God". The music and songs are upbeat and you will feel the
presence of the Holy Spirit! (The music starts at 7:15pm) .
If you would like, immediately after the mass, you may stay for the special laying of hands healing service with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit entering into those asking for healing.
Miracles of healing have taken place for those whom have opened their minds, body, and
spirit for special healing in these services.
Note: This service is open to all persons of any faith in need of healing.

Funeral Luncheon Committees
We invite you to join our ministry to help support families during their
time of grieving for a loved one. Our parishes provides the families of the
deceased with lunch in the Downing Street Campus cafeteria. The Funeral Luncheon Committees organize the food donations to help keep the costs
of the meals down and coordinate the volunteers who help the day of the
funeral to serve and clean-up. Please consider assisting your fellow
parishioners and friends during such an important time in their lives.
If willing to donate food items (casserole, salad, vegetable, soup, dessert, buns, etc.) or help at the
luncheons, you will be called on a “rotating” basis every 3-4 funeral luncheons. If you are interested
in helping with this great ministry for funeral luncheon donations and luncheon helpers, please contact
the office, 773-1327 or Bernice Lewis, 773-8540 for St. Mary or office, 773-1656 or Rose Hemm at
778-8642 / [email protected] for St. Boniface.
If when called, it is not a good time for you to assist — just tell us you cannot help at this time.
Please direct any questions to Bernice or Rose. Many, many thanks to “ALL” of our parishioners
who have assisted with this ministry over the years!
Cursillo Movement
John 15:15: "I no longer call you servants because a servant does not
know his master's business. Instead I have called you friends, for
everything that I learned from my Father, I have made known to you. "
The Cursillo Movement is a movement within the Catholic church that begins with a weekend which provides an opportunity for a person to encounter Christ
through friendship. By learning to share and grow in faith through friendship, we
draw nearer to Christ daily. We celebrate our 55th anniversary in the Cincinnati Archdiocese this year. Our national encounter is being held this July in San Antonio, Texas, and Cincinnati will host the Regional En-
counter at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit center October 13-15.
A men's weekend is being held at OLHSC in Cincinnati September 7 - 10. Please pray for those men who
desire to attend. Check out our links: www.cincinnati-cursillo.org and www.natl-cursillo.org

PSC: Summer is here!! Everyone at Piqua Catholic school wishes students and staff alike a very
enjoyable summer vacation! Here is a look ahead at just a few things for next school year:
Piqua Catholic Cavaliers in Action will host their 2nd annual 5K run/walk on August 19th at the Lock 9
in Piqua. The race will kick off at 8am with awards and snacks to follow at the Knights of St. John hall. Please plan to register online at www.can'tstoprunningco.com or paper registration forms may be
picked up at the YMCA in Piqua or at the Piqua Catholic school office.
Kindergarten Open House is set for August 16th at 6:00pm in the
Piqua Catholic Cafeteria, and Open House for our registered
students is set for August 21st. This is usually a fun event with scavenger hunts, prizes, and full of Cavalier Pride! Bring your
school supplies, meet your new teachers, and we hope to see
everyone then!
We will be doing our annual Box Top promotion again this year
so clip those box tops as each one adds up. Last year we made
about $1,000 and this year we would like to top that by raising $1,500.00 for our school! Clip all summer long and bring them in
when school starts in August so we can beat last years record
amount!
This years fun events will include field trips to The Ohio
Caverns, Wright Patterson Air Force Museum, Brumbaugh's Fruit Farm, Piatt Castles, and many new places as well. We will
be hosting our 2nd annual Chili Cook Off in November so keep
an eye in the bulletin for more information this fall and get busy
perfecting those chili recipes!
We have many exciting things planned for this school year so we
hope everyone enjoys their summer and we look forward to seeing everyone in August!

Rev. J. B. Hemsteger—Piqua Civic Hall of Fame Award Winner
The Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce Civic Hall of Fame committee recently recognized three
outstanding Piqua citizens who significantly contributed to the Piqua community. Receiving this honor
was Rev. John Bernard Hemsteger, the first pastor of St. Boniface Church.
He was born in Germany and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1851. He completed his seminary studies in Cincinnati in 1854. He came to Piqua in 1855 as the first assistant pastor to the
English mission church (St. Mary) before founding the German congregation (St. Boniface) in 1855 and
promoting the construction of the first church on Adam Street. Father Hemsteger moved to Columbus in 1859 and became the pastor of Holy Cross Church where he remained until his death. In 1868 he
became the first Vicar General of the Columbus diocese.

The 17th annual Dollars for our Scholars fundraiser for Piqua Catholic School will be held again this year with one change. Instead of four luncheons,
there will be three luncheons. They will be held at the Miami Valley Centre
Mall Banquet Room and will be catered by Mrs. B’s Catering. We all
enjoyed our new location and certainly the food served by Mrs. B’s Catering
last year.
The luncheons will be on three consecutive Wednesdays starting with September 13, 20 and 27. All
luncheons start at noon and end by 1pm. The prizes will be the same as in the past and that is, $1,000 top prize, $100, $50, $25 and a bottle of wine for each 10th ticket drawn. The tickets are $100 each with
three chances to win prizes. Over the past 16 years we have raised over $140,000 for the students at
Piqua Catholic School. We hope you will join us in this great afternoon of friends, family and fun. Call
Ruth Koon, Chairman, for ticket information at 778-1288.

The Center for Early Learning at Piqua Catholic School has been a true success story.
Erin Grant has become a great leader for the school, which is almost filled to capacity next year. According to Erin almost half of the prekindergarten class will be attending
Piqua Catholic School next year. That is exactly what the committee who established the
school hoped would happen.
The one comment that Erin has heard from parents about the Center for Early Learning is that the outdoor play area needs some improvement. That is the purpose of this article. We did meet with Erin and toured
the play area and one important aspect of the grounds was improving the raised gardens. We did meet with
two Master Gardeners, both parish members of St. Boniface and St. Mary Churches, and they are willing to
help upgrade the gardens.
We have a donor who is willing to donate the pea gravel, soil, and plants. Erin will be able to use this
garden in August when the 2017 school year begins. We would also like to address the following issues:
small storage shed for storage of bicycles and garden tools; recoating of blacktop in the fenced play area; more mulch under playground equipment; a shade tree; outside water hookup for raised garden area; a track
around the perimeter of the play area for bicycles.
We are asking that you consider donating something from the list above or provide funding for one of the
improvements. Any questions can be referred to Erin Grant at the CFEL at 773-3876. Checks may be made payable to St. Patrick School for the Center for Early Learning at Piqua Catholic School and mailed to 218
S. Downing St., Piqua, Ohio 45356.
Thank you, Kelly Earhart, Stacy Scott, Marsha Koon and Ruth Koon

SUMMER FUN!
Youth activities at the Piqua
Parishes have begun!
Our volunteers for the St. Mary
Festival were so helpful in many
booths.
Twenty-two students in grades 4
-8 enjoyed the Putt Putt Golf
celebration at Vandemark Farms to honor their service as servers,
lectors, and musicians. Thank
you for assisting at Mass with
dedication! We also thanked
our faithful high school lectors, servers, Eucharistic Ministers, ushers, and musicians with a dinner/movie.
June was busy with many Confirmation Spiritual Journeys, our First Communion Students lead the way in
our Corpus Christi Procession (June 18). Our young adults met to plan events at our Beppo Unos Night (June 22), our high school students attended the Fearless Festival in West Milton (June 24), and Children's
Liturgy of the Word began at 9 AM Mass on June 11!
July will include youth assisting at the Mission Committee Rummage Sale. Vacation Bible School — Maker Fun Factory — takes place July 17-21, and our King's Island trip for all of those wonderful youth
who help at Mass will be on July 25.
Special Recognition: We honored twelve high school students with the Parish Leadership Award
and Discipleship Pin on Sunday, June 25: Angelique LeMaster, Ethan Knapke, Gabe Knapke, Grace
Ryan, Jenna Zimmerman, Kirstyn Lee, Logan Copsey, Madi Guillozet, Mason Darner, Megan Tittering-
ton, Nathan Copsey, and Sylvia Mitchell. We thank these youth for their attendance and service at weekend
Mass, their faith learning with other parish teens, and their participation in service work through our
parishes. God bless you and continue your great leadership!
Encouraging Words for Women by Darlene Sala
“Encouragement often sets off a chain reaction. Those who encourage us, inspire us, in turn, to reach out
to still other people with words and deeds of encouragement.” Darlene Sala
This book is a wonderful read! I find that it's not just for women but anyone who needs a
boost of wisdom and comfort throughout their day. This author touches upon problems with
which we all deal, with common sense and inspiring scripture passages.
Both peace and that glorious hallelujah moment comes upon us when we realize that we are
not alone, and that inspiration is just a turn of the page away. It is all about finding in her
words that which touches our minds and hearts and souls. We can put the book down but
will want to revisit it again and again.
