Parish Mission Statement

The Parish of St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy, inspired by Mary’s “Yes” and led by the Holy Spirit,

strives to be a faith-filled community, joyfully welcoming all to witness and to celebrate the Gospel.

From the Pastor’s Desk

This week we celebrate Thanksgiving,

the holiest non-holy day of the year. In

additional to the traditional family get-

togethers, the big meal and football, there

is a religious meaning of the holiday that

has been present since its origins.

According to tradition, in 1691 about 50

pilgrims celebrated together with a group

of 90 Wampanoag Indians to thank God

for the abundances of this continent. It

was a harvest festival. More than 150

years later, President Washington called

the day an official holiday of sincere and

humble thanks. President Lincoln

proclaimed it a national holiday in 1863.

It is a day to give thanks, and as we

gather together with family and friends

this week, let’s not leave God out of it.

The word Eucharist, as you may know,

comes from the Greek word Eukaristein,

which means Thanksgiving. Each time

we celebrate the Eucharist, we are

thankful to God. We are called to

continually live in thanksgiving.

Everything we have and we are comes

from Him.

We are grateful to God for our parish and

for the bountiful graces showered upon

us in the past 2 ½ years. Thank you for

all that you share to make our parish

alive and joyful. The Eucharist on

Thanksgiving Day is at 9:00 am. It’s a

great way to start your day of

thanksgiving to God by being present

with your parish community.

Fr. Ken

Thanksgiving Greetings and Salutations,

Just wanted to let families know there is a new

weekly Sunday resource for children on the

information shelf in the gathering space. It is

called “Explaining God’s Word.” It is a colorful

booklet filled with the Sunday Gospel message

and a few activities. Please take one for your

children to look through before or during Mass

time. It is a new resource, so please let me know

if the kids like it. Thank you!

So Thanksgiving is upon us. Blessings to All

families for a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.

Have a great week everyone and just for

laughs…Why can’t you take a turkey to church?

They use FOWL language. LOL!!!

DONATIONS

If you are interested in making a

Thanksgiving food donation as a way of

giving “thanks,” feel free to drop off

your donations of nonperishable food items in the

shopping carts in the back of church. As always, this

food will be sent to the food pantry at St. Thomas the

Apostle Parish in Garden City. The other way to help is

to drop off a gift card that we can give to a family in

need this Christmas (we recommend nothing larger than

$25). Donations of gift cards can be dropped in the

offertory basket during mass; please place them in a

marked envelope

HOLY NAME FRATERNITY

This weekend we are starting our Giving Tree. There

are opportunities to buy gifts for children and the Home

-bound of our Parish; gift certificates for Christmas

dinners, and donations for our local St. Vincent de Paul

Conference (SVdP). We are asking that all gifts be re-

turned under the tree unwrapped in a gift bag, with the

original tag somewhere visable. Gift cards and dona-

tions can be dropped in the offertory basket during Mass. We also ask

that all gifts be returned by the weekend of Dec. 15th and 16th, though

if you can get them back earlier we will also be able to get the presents

to the families sooner.

This time of year is not all about money and gifts though. You can also

give the gift of your time. This next week we will be helping to serve

Thanksgiving Dinner at the Newburg United Methodist Church. There

are a range of opportunities; from prepping food on Wednesday to the

final clean up on Thursday. In late January and early February we will

also be helping the Methodists with a dinner and a breakfast during the

week that they host the rotating Homeless Shelter. A little closer to

home, our St. Vincent de Paul could use some help returning phone

calls, and following up with clients that are seeking help. This group

has done amazing work in the last 9 months since they have started

helping people who live in our parish boundaries. If you think you

could help our SVdP with their work, you can leave a message for

them at 734-425-4421 ext. 219, or look for them at the monthly Pan-

cake Breakfasts between 11 and noon. This week I will be saying a

prayer of thanksgiving for all of the great things you do.

Community Lunch AND Thanksgiving

We have had two wonderful Community Lunches on the fourth

Thursdays of the last two months. In November, the fourth Thursday is

of course Thanksgiving! Instead of holding our own event, we are once

again teaming up with Newburg United Methodist Church to serve

dinner on Thanksgiving Day to anyone in our community! All are

invited eat and/or serve at this feast.

If you would like to eat: RSVP to Newburg United Methodist Church at 734-422-

0149 or you can register online at (newburgumc.org). This meal has nothing to do

with income, it is about spending time with others on Thanksgiving. So please come

and join us at either 1:00 or 4:00 pm for a good meal.

If you want to help:

Please see Paul Z. after weekend Masses for the sign-up sheet, or call our parish office

(734-425-4421).

Other Ways to help:

Monetary donations for turkeys. Cash or checks made out to Newburg United

Methodist Church. You can put your donation in an envelope marked with “Turkey

Donation” and put in the collection basket or drop off at our parish office by Monday,

Nov. 19th.

Donate a pie from our Choir Pie Sale. Location: Newburg United Methodist Church –

Guthrie Hall 36500 Ann Arbor Trail (between Newburgh & Wayne Roads) 734-422-0149

This year we will start our Giving Tree on the

weekend of Nov. 17th and 18th. Even though this

is before advent, we wanted everyone to have a

chance to go sales shopping on Black Friday if

they liked. We will ask for all of the gifts to be

returned by the weekend of Dec. 15th and 16th, so

that we can get the gifts into the family's hands before Christmas. We ask that all gifts

be returned unwrapped in gift bags, with the original tag attached someplace visible.

This should help us make sure the correct gifts are getting to each family, and will

give the parents the chance to wrap their children's gifts if they like.

This year you will see four types of tags on the tree. The first two, are tags for gifts

(toys and clothes) and for grocery store gift cards, for local families in need. There

will also be tags for a gift for homebound members of our parish. The last type of tag

will be for donations that will go directly to our St. Vincent de Paul. St Vincent de

Paul will use these donations to help families with things like rent, utilities, and medi-

cal help. As a final note, if you know a parishioner who is homebound please let Paul

Zbytowski know. We want to make sure no one is missed.

RCIA Right of Acceptance

Please pray for our Catechumens and Candidates in the RCIA program.
