Parish Mission Statement
Our Parish Family, under the influence of the Gospel, strives to be bold and fearless disciples of Jesus Christ. We witness to our Catholic
faith by living the Eucharist. We are the hands and feet of Christ in our service and in our joyful proclamation of the goodness of God.

Continued from last week
I had been at Futamatagawa
Church (the church is named after the
26 Japanese martyrs of Nagasaki) for
a year and a half. Living in the big
city of Yokohama, I began teaching
about Christianity at a local
Community College in downtown
Yokohama. I was involved with youth
and young adult ministry with the Japanese Bishop’s
Conference. Things were on a roll for me (living the dream??).
Then one day in mid-November, I received a letter from the
PIME Superior General. He was asking me to go to the States
and work for a while. There was a great need, especially in the
Mission Center. This was one of the most difficult decisions I
ever had to make. After a week of praying and talking it over
with others, I decided to give him a positive response. I would
go to the States after Easter the following year.
I think it was more difficult readjusting to life in the States
than it was adjusting to life in Japan. For the first six months, I
would think in Japanese and then translate into English. I often
found myself thinking, “Silly Americans. Why do you do it this
way?” The first year back, I was the director of our Mission
Promotion Center in Detroit. We have a fundraising center
which produces a magazine, programs for sponsoring children,
seminarians, projects such as clean water, etc. in mission
countries. After a year, I was elected the regional superior of
the PIME Missionaries in the United States (at that time, which
included Mexico).

Vacation Bible School The fun
begins Monday evening at 6:00
p.m. Pre-schoolers to pre-teens
are invited to join the Jurassic
Journey and Discover God’s
Everlasting Love.
Kindergarten We are excited
to be able to offer religion
readiness sessions for
Kindergarteners on Mondays.
These will take place from 6:00-
7:15 pm. Please let us know of
any eligible children.
Registration for our new
catechetical year is ongoing. We
would like to have the forms and
baptismal certificates back by
the end of August. Sessions
begins early this year: Sept. 12.
Catechists and Helpers are
asked to attend a plenary
planning meeting on August 22
at 5:30 pm. Does that include
YOU?
Liturgy of the Word with
Children will be offered on
Sundays if we get enough
interested Leaders and
participants. We are looking for
a new, shorter name for this
wonderful ministry. What is
YOUR suggestion?
The Bottom Line An ordained
minister was stationed aboard a
U.S. Navy battleship. He was
concerned about the morale of
some of the sailors after the
announcements he heard on his
first Sunday morning aboard:
“Religious services commencing.
Maintain silence about the
decks. Knock off all
unnecessary work.” An hour
later this announcement
followed: “Resume all
unnecessary work.”

IN FORMATION Fr. Ken (continued from pg. 1)
For the next ten years, I continued as “provincial”. Along with the administrative work, I
also got a chance to visit some of our missions: Mexico (numerous times), India, Thailand,
Myanmar, Colombia and, to attend numerous meetings in Italy. I racked up the frequent
flier miles easily. During that time, we also did a total renovation of our Headquarters and
Mission Center building in Detroit, which includes the mission offices plus living quarters
for residents and guests with 23 bedrooms. Since most of what I did for these ten years was
“administrative”, I was graced to be the unofficial weekend assistant at St. Blasé Parish in
Sterling Heights. It truly was a blessing, helping me to remember that I was still a priest
even though I sat behind a desk most days. The part of my heart that I didn’t leave in
Atsugi remains there.
My third term ended in May, 2015. I asked and was granted permission to take a
sabbatical, during which I did some travel, study and spiritual formation. I also wanted to
take time to spend with my elderly father. My mother had passed away in December, 2014.
My sabbatical ended at Easter this year. There were many possibilities before me; of
course, PIME had some plans in mind for me. My father went to join my mother in
heaven on April 12. I had been praying for months for some direction from the Holy
Spirit, and it came in the shape of a weekly email from the Archdiocese. Three weeks in a
row, this parish (no-name Westland parish) was listed. PIME’s current regional superior,
Fr. George, says that the members of PIME are “a race of men who go where no one else
wants to go.” So here I am and this is my past, that which has formed me, as a human and
especially as a priest. Happy to be with you, the people of God of St. Mary, Cause of Our
Joy.
Fr. Ken
WORLD YOUTH DAY
Our St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy Pilgrims are safely home. We experienced Poland, Slo-
vakia, Hungary, and Austria as part of our 2 week journey. Our partners on the journey
were teens and young adults from St. Thomas a'Becket in Canton, Our Lady of the Lakes
in Waterford, and Sacred Heart Parish in Ely, Nevada. Rev. Brian Meldrum from Our Lady
of the Lakes Parish also accompanied us on our journey.
It was an amazing two weeks and sometimes a pilgrimage can be challenging and hard at
times. There is sickness, tiredness, and sometimes patience is at an all time low but you
push through and carry on.
Pope Francis said so many powerful things in his homily at the Papal Mass but this quote/
statement is one we will always remember.
"I always like to link the Gospel Beatitudes with Matthew 25, where Jesus presents us with
the works of mercy and tells us that we will be judged on them. I ask you, then, to redis-
cover the corporal works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the
naked, welcome the stranger, assist the sick, visit the imprisoned and bury the dead. Nor
should we overlook the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, teach the igno-
rant, admonish sinners, comfort the sorrowful, forgive offenses, patiently bear with trou-
blesome people and pray to God for the living and the dead. As you can see, mercy does
not just imply being a “good person” nor is it mere sentimentality. It is the measure of our
authenticity as disciples of Jesus, and of our credibility as Christians in today’s world."
It is something that we are examples of in our parish today and it important that we expand
on it.
Over the next few weeks some of our pil-
grims will be sharing their experiences in
the bulletin and we would like to share a
slide show of our journey with our parish
family. More to come on that as we figure
out those details.
Thank you for you prayers and support for
our one in a lifetime journey.

The Jubilee Year of Mercy With Pope Francis
Is Church Like a Football Match?
Each one of us can ask himself or herself today: How do I live in the
Church? When I go to church, is it as though I were at the stadium,
at a football match? Is it as though I were at the cinema? No, it is
something else. How do I go to church? How do I receive the gifts
that the Church offers me to grow and mature as a Christian? Do I
participate in the life of the community, or do I go to church and withdraw into my
own problems, isolating myself from others?
- General Audience, October 9, 2013
Reflection: In order to experience God’s mercy, we have to actively seek to receive
it from God and give it to others. Pray about the ways God might want you to get
involved in your parish. What active role can you play?
RCIA: WHAT IS RCIA?
Do you know someone who wants to
become Catholic? Have you completed
all the Sacraments of initiation? Are you
interested in a refresher course? Would
you like to journey with someone inter-
ested in becoming Catholic? Would you
like to be a sponsor for someone becom-
ing Catholic?
SHARING If you can answer yes to any
of the above questions, please give the
Parish Office a call at 425-4421.
