Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 9, 2018
I read in the newspaper last week that the renowned singer Aretha Franklin died without leaving a will. By law in Michigan, where she lived and died, all property, assets, and money, go to her family, in this case, her four children. But the article noted that it will take years to sort it out. Profits from royalties, real estate, bank accounts, stocks, etc. will have to be determined. Then the IRS will take its cut, lawyers and accountants will take their share, and, finally, her children will get some
money. I think much of this hassle could have been avoided if she had filed a will.
One of the issues that priests frequently encounter in Intensive Care Units is the anguish spouses and families face as they decide to end all medical support for their loved one, or, in other words, “pull the plug.” “Should we?” they ask. “Is it permissible, or are we sinning as we take our loved one off of life support machinery?”
If and when they do, if their spouse, parent, or child is called Home by God, then people will ask what they must do next. “How do we arrange a funeral? How do we schedule a Mass?”
These end-of-life issues are not things that anyone is eager to discuss. They’re not decisions easy to make. But, if they are not dealt with they can cause problems and/or increase anxiety.
To help you with these situations the South County Deanery and the Archdiocese is sponsoring a program entitled, “The Conversation: A Catholic Perspective on End-of-Life Issues.” This four hour program will present priests and lawyers who will discuss the medical, spiritual, financial, and practical matters that families confront with serious illness and death. This is an excellent way to learn about these important realities and to grow in your knowledge of what our Catholic Church teaches. I encourage any person of advanced age and any person whose parents are of advanced age to attend. Be prepared to have answers for when these end-of-life circumstances come.
This presentation will occur at the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Center on Saturday, October 6, 10:00 am—2:00 pm. To register, visit rcfstl.org/the-conversation or call 314-918-2892.
Fall Festival 2018 is approaching quickly. Have you signed up to help? Did you buy/sell your raffle tickets? Are you praying for nice weather? I hope you answered yes to all those questions. Your support and participation in the Fall Festival will insure its success. Thanks for the help you will give us.
Have you asked a relative or friend to consider joining the Catholic Church? Have you offered to accompany them on this journey? Our R.C.I.A. team is ready to work with all who express interest. We would love to have you and those close to you join us.
We welcome today the three students from Kenrick-Glennon Seminary who have been assigned to St. Mark’s for this academic year. Coming to us from the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese are Deacon Emmanuel Lopez and Theology II student Benjamin Armentrout. Coming to us from the Knoxville Diocese is Theology III student Alexander Hernandez. We are glad to have them at St. Mark’s. Please welcome them to our parish.
God bless all of you. Father Hambrough
