Issue No 66, Summer 2015

In early June 2015 the Planning Committeeof Thurrock Borough Council grantedplanning permission for the development of a new six bed Hospice and enablingdevelopment at Malgraves Farm, LowerDunton Road, Langdon Hills. Later in themonth we received the exciting newsthat planning permission had also beenagreed by the National PlanningCasework Unit. This means that the newHospice now has full planning consent.

We are delighted that ourvision for this developmenthas been approved and we extend our thanks to all involved for their support.

The decision to expand St. Luke’s has not beentaken lightly. Our current Hospice site in Basildon, has 8bedrooms and is uniquely placed and embedded in the localcommunity. Development of any kind (service or buildings)

needs to work satisfactorily forALL the people we serve in both Basildon and Thurrock. Because of its close proximity to ourFobbing Farm site, when the new building is completed, the two sites will be able to operate seamlessly as one 14 bedroom Hospice.

This will enable us to minimise costs whilstmaximising available expertise and be to thebenefit of our patients and those who use ourservices.A development of this nature would not be possible if St. Luke’s was to undertake the task alone. This is becausedevelopments in end of life care are happening quickly andthe time required to raise the capital needed for a new facilitywould be lengthy. Consequently this would not deliverimprovements in care as quickly as desired. St. Luke’s has been fortunate in forming a partnership withCountryside, a local developer based in Brentwood, to take the project forward. Building work is scheduled to start inspring 2016 and regular progress reports will be included in

future editions of St. Luke’s News. Meanwhile here are some artistic impressions of the new building.Visit www.malgravesfarm.co.uk for further information and to view the plans. If you wish to discuss this project with us please telephone St. Luke’s on 01268 524973 and speak to Marilyn DeBattista.

What a difference ayear makes by our Chair of Trustees Gerry Peaty When I last wrote in St. Luke’s News a yearago, I reflected upon how we had justopened our new extension, and that wewere starting to solve our accommodationproblems. I must admit to a little feeling of envy towards some of ourstaff who moved into our new building with light, recentlydecoratedrooms, andspace! Theydeserved it ofcourse, after somany years ofbeingcramped. Italso gave staffin the oldbuilding a littlemore room tomanoeuvre. It didn’t last for long however. Along came our OneResponseand Fast Track Teams, our new 24 hours a day, 365 days ayear, Support, Assessment & Advice Service. It’s made ourworking environment very cramped again, but it’s worth it.What a phenomenal success they have been!I, along with a few others, doubted the need for the servicesat first, but the statistics have proved me wrong. Not only is

there a need, but wehave managed to runthe services very well.Nothing gives me morepleasure than seeingrelatives of patients we care for writing to the local press to praise our services, and that is what has happened inrecent months. Our new services have also given us the opportunity towelcome new staff to the hospice, which is always nice.Interestingly some of them have never been in a hospiceenvironment before, and they all seem pleasantly surprisedwith what they have found. Finally, I would like tomention our recent 25thanniversary service. It waslovely to see so many oldand new friends andsupporters there. We mayall be 25 years older now,but none of ourenthusiasm or passion forSt. Luke’s has waned over that time and our team of staff andvolunteers in all areas of both the Hospice and SLH Tradingcontinue to perform to the highest level, to support those whoneed our help. It is wonderful to be part of such an amazingorganisation and team and I look forward to the future withgreat excitement.

St. Luke’s Hospice has always valued thesupport given by volunteers, who play animportant part at every level of Hospicework. As a special tribute to our volunteersand to celebrate our 25th Anniversary YearSt. Luke’s Hospice launched a ‘Long Service Awards Scheme’ to coincide with‘Volunteer Week’ in June. Award badges and certificates were presented tovolunteers who have given 5, 10, 15, 20, & 25+ years ofservice and this will now become an annual event. Duringthe week 108 volunteers received awards – 9 of which were

for 25+ years’ service to St. Luke’s. More LongService Awards will be presented later in 2015.Across the three Hospice sites some 290 volunteerssupport Hospice care each week with a further 156volunteers helping out in Hospice shops and thewarehouse. St. Luke’s has a formal and structured volunteerprogramme which trains, supports and mentorsvolunteers in the role they undertake. An integral partof the programme is to ensure that both parties aresatisfied with the role being undertaken, be itgardening, working in the kitchens, the Day Hospice orthe In-patient Unit, administration, counselling, driving,or fundraising. Volunteers come to us for manyreasons. It may be to make friends, give somethingback to the community or even to learn a new skill orgain experience. Whatever the reason, theircontribution to our work is valued and appreciated.

Dear Friends,Throughout this year we are celebrating the25th Anniversary of St. Luke’s Hospice. How exciting! It’s truly amazing to think back to the 5th June 1990 whenwe welcomed our very first Day Hospice patient, Joan. From 1983, when I first sharedmy vision for a home for patientswith life threatening cancer, untilthat day in 1990, our wonderfulcommunity in Thurrock, Basildonand the surrounding areas, aswell as family and friends workedso hard to raise the money weneeded! Our ‘Hospice journey’ had begunwith just 25p. Yes, 25p, a tokendonation from one of my DistrictNurse patients, Minnie. During this ‘Anniversary Year’ St. Luke’s is launching aspecial 25 years appeal. May I ask you to support this appeal to help us to continue with the care of our patientsand their families? I am very aware that St. Luke’s would not have become a reality without the tremendous support of our localcommunity. This support still continues to help us today and this wasuppermost in my mind when I was invited to attend apresentation at the Eastgate Shopping Centre.

The Hospice has been successful in obtaining grantfunding from Essex County Council under the‘Independence, Choice and Control’ scheme for a 3 yearproject to develop a Hospice Neighbours scheme. Thisis a community based volunteer service that providespractical support and companionship to people andfamilies living with a life limiting illness. This support caninclude a range of practical tasks such as taking the dogfor a walk, picking up prescriptions, light shopping, gardening or simply providing company for people whomay be isolated. Similar schemes are already operatingelsewhere and they provide a great way of helping toconnect communities. Comprehensive training and on-going support for Neighbour volunteers will beprovided by the Hospice. For more information aboutthis scheme, contact Sharon Quinn, ServiceDevelopment Manager at St. Lukes on 01268 524973.

The service also supports children and young people who have a life limiting illness.Susan Dodd, Family Support Service Manager explains“The main aims of the Family Support workers are tosupport children and young people in expressing theiremotions about their grief and loss, to reduce their senseof isolation and improve their resilience. 2015ALL YEAR

Event Calendar

Since the launch in 2010 to the end of our financial year in 2014,the trading company had claimed £250,000 in Gift Aid from HM Revenue & Customs. (HMRC)It can be seen from this that Gift Aid has become a veryimportant source of income for the Hospice and one which wewould like to build on.Gift Aid is a scheme operated specifically for charitableorganisations which enables them to reclaim from HMRC anadditional 25% of the sale value of an item sold in our shops at noadditional cost to the donor, provided the donor is a UK tax payer. Thus if a 3 piece suite is sold in one of our shops for £100, anadditional £25 can be claimed from HMRC if the donor of thesuite is registered with our trading company for Gift Aid.

As the ‘MeerKats’ wouldsay, “Simples! That’sexactly what it is, verysimple, straight-forwardand easy to operate. Ittakes approximately 1-2 minutesto register as a Gift Aid donor. So, the next time you donate an item for sale in a St. Luke’s Hospice shop, please ask aboutregistering for Gift Aid and make all your donations instantly 25% more valuable. It is intended that, in future, our Gift Aid scheme will be ‘DigitalDonor Sign-up’ and a working group is currently exploring thepossibility of introducing a fully digital scheme. Onwards &upwards there’s no escaping the digital revolution!

Whilst it is good to reflect on the past it is essential we look to the future. The Hospice has always embraced change and has been ableto do so because of the commitment of staff and volunteers whomake up our amazing team and the fantastic community whichsupports us.Each year seems to be busier than the next, both in the Hospiceand SLH Trading.Whilst the vision of our Hospice remains the same, undoubtedlythe way in which care is delivered has and will continue to alter.Looking to the future we know that our population is changingand we need to ensure that our services are structured to meetthe increasingly complex needs of our patients. Services willneed to be delivered in different ways and in a range of diversesettings including in people’s homes and the hospice.A priority for us will be to reach out to our community to raiseawareness of the value and scope of hospice care and to take aleading role in shaping that care.Key to our future development will be our continued work with

patients with illnesses other than cancer, to ensure we meet thediverse needs of all patients. As a Hospice we will continue to look outward and engage inpartnership and collaborative working to provide a betterexperience of care which is also cost effective. This is so clearlydemonstrated in our OneResponse service, which bringstogether a number of organisations to deliver seamless care.To sustain such growth and development places a heavy burdenon our accommodation so we will continue to explore options toimprove and expand our accommodation to ensure we are fit forpurpose and fit for the future. This began with our new extensionat Nethermayne which has enhanced our Day Hospice andOutpatient facilities and also includes our hopes to buildadditional facilities in Thurrock, and we were pleased thatThurrock Council supported this plan in June.As an organisation we recognise that even after 25 years there isstill so much to do. We look forward to the future and are forwardlooking to shape the future. Our ultimate aim is to ensure that St Luke’s is able to deliver carefor the next 25 years and beyond.

St. Luke’s HospiceShops & Gift AidIn May 2010, the trading company of St. Luke’s Hospiceadopted Gift Aid which operates differently to theHospice’s (cash) donation Gift Aid scheme.
