CANDLELIGHT WALKING TOUR

December 6, 2014

Granville Volunteer Band (4:00 pm)

Duo Celeste (7:00, 7:45, & 8:30 pm).

St. Luke’s sponsored Christmas Candlelight Walking Tour event takes place in three 30-minute sets, at 7:00, 7:45, & 8:30 pm, and features Duo Celeste. The Duo is Valorie and Jim Hildreth, a husband-wife team on the flute, piano and violin. Valorie and Jim are not strangers to St. Luke’s - Valorie has played on the walking tour before, and Jim has accompanied the choirs on many occasions for Evensong. Their program will feature attractive arrangements of favorite Christmas and classical melodies.

Additionally, St. Luke’s will host the Granville Community Band at 4:00 pm. Come support residents of Granville who enjoy playing musical instruments, presenting this concert for the community!

THE ANGEL TREE

EVENSONG

The Angel Tree, located in the Undercroft, provides gift opportunities for individual children in need through Job and Family Services and is a great example of outreach focused on family participation. Please choose a tag, shop for the items on the wish list and have the unwrapped items back by December 7 along with a roll of wrapping paper.

Choral Evensong for Advent on Sunday, December 21

On Sunday, December 21 at 4:30 pm, the men of St. Luke’s Choir will sing Choral Evensong for Advent. The music will be predominantly plainsong – simply chanting the canticles and psalm, with the congregation joining the choir for the prayers and responses. Join us for this brief, quiet evening service on the fourth Sunday of Advent.

CHRISTMAS CHOIR INVITATIONAnyone interested in singing for the 11:00 pm Christ Mass on Christmas Eve is cordially invited to join us for two rehearsals in preparation for the service. We’ll sing a mixture of old favorites, our “standards” for Christmas Eve, and new pieces. The schedule is:

Thursday, December 18 - 7:30 - 9:00 pm

Saturday, December 20 - 10:30 am - Noon

Wednesday, December 24 - 9:30 pm - Warm Up, 10:30 pm - Choral Prelude, 11:00 pm - Christ Mass

Anyone is welcome, but the ability to read music is very helpful, as we move very quickly. Music can be supplied in advance if requested. Please RSVP to the church office or [email protected], by Sunday, December 14 if you wish to join us!

THANK YOU!

What these increased pledges and

notes say is that the mission and ministry

of St. Luke’s are a high priority and elicit broad support.

That’s the first order of business. Thank you to the many people who have engaged one of the Wardens, Bill Dargusch and Michele Layman, a member of the Vestry, or me in healthy conversations about money. Healthy conversations about money in church communities are rare, and I am grateful that we can have them at St. Luke’s. You have asked thoughtful questions about the projected deficit, sought clarification when you weren’t sure that you understood, and – most of all – pitched in to help. When I wrote last month, St. Luke’s was facing a projected year-end deficit of $24,639. As of this writing, our projected deficit has shrunk to under $9,000 as the result of gifts and pledges that you’ve made to close the gap. This is an extraordinary response from any congregation, but then this is an extraordinary congregation!

Thanks, also, for the response to the request the Stewardship Committee has made that each household consider increasing its pledge giving for 2015 by 1% of annual income. A large number of pledge cards have been turned in with significant increases. Several who have not been able to increase pledges sent along notes explaining individual circumstances. What these increased pledges and notes say is that the mission and ministry of St. Luke’s are a high priority and elicit broad support. If you have not returned your 2015 pledge card, please do so as soon as possible so the Finance Committee can prepare next year’s budget in advance of the December 9 Vestry meeting. With the generous support of our mission and ministry as we come to the end of this year, and the faithful response to the request for that support in 2015, each of us has additional reason to be hopeful and joyful as we enter what is, for most of us, an already hopeful and joyful holiday season.

Now to the “little more business” part of this letter: At its November 11 meeting, the Wardens and Vestry decided not to proceed with the proposed addition to St. Luke’s church building. Working with David B. Meleca Architects, LLC, the church solicited bids from three reputable contractors.

FROM THE RECTORCANDLELIGHT WALKING TOUR

Although there was some variation in the bid prices, all three bids came in over $1.2 million. As Bill Dargusch, our Senior Warden, put it so eloquently, this is simply “a bridge too far.” The Capital Campaign Committee, chaired by Bill

Wilken, recommended that the Vestry not proceed with what we are now calling “Plan A” and that it authorize the committee to develop a “Plan B” to be submitted by its December meeting. The Vestry voted unanimously to proceed on this basis.

The Vestry and the committee both feel strongly that a scaled-back plan can still meet the needs of the mission and ministry of the parish. Such a scaled-back plan will be accomplished within the existing footprint of the

building and will take into account the input that was gathered during the design charettes done before “Plan A” was created. The committees report at the December 9 meeting will include five proposed components:

– a building plan (Plan B)– a fundraising plan to garner support– a timetable– a communications plan– a budget for activities

“Plan A” included many changes and improvements to the church building. The Vestry believes that much can still be accomplished without asking the parish to over-extend itself financially. Initial disappointment at not being able to proceed with Meleca’s elegant design was quickly replaced by an optimistic sense that “Plan B” will meet the needs of our growing parish in a constructive way and without incurring long-term debt that might burden future members of the parish.

As always, the Wardens, Vestry, and I welcome your questions. We promise to continue to communicate frequently and thoroughly as we move quickly and efficiently to present a plan to the entire parish family.

Blessings, Stephen Applegate

Coffee: Grounds for Discussion

Sundays from 10:00 am – 10:45 am

December 7

MEET THE AUTHOR: KATHARINE KENAH Local children’s author Katharine E. Kenah grew up on an oceanographic observatory among scientists and cats, developing an interest in the environment, physical science, and the creatures of land, sea and sky. Having spent the early part of her career on numerous scientific research vessels, Kenah settled with her husband and family in Granville, Ohio. Turning her efforts to children’s literature, Kenah has written a number of books intended for children from kindergarten to age eight. In this session she’ll share information on sources of information for her work. Children welcome!

LISTENING TO HANDEL’S “MESSIAH” IN A DIFFERENT WAY In 1990, the late Jaroslav Pelikan, who served as Sterling Professor of History at Yale University, attended the annual performance of George Frideric Handel’s Messiah by Musica Sacra under the baton of Richard Westenburg at Carnegie Hall in New York. Westenburg was a longtime friend of Pelikan’s and had asked the eminent scholar to write the liner notes for the program. The essay in the program notes bore the title “Whose Bible Is It?” – an essay that Pelikan later expanded into an entire book by the same name.

In the Coffee: Grounds for Discussion session we’ll listen together to excerpts from Messiah looking at the texts Handel used as the libretto for his music. Here’s a hint – most of the texts are from the Hebrew Scriptures/Old Testament, texts that have been taken not to have valid meaning in their own right within the Jewish context, but only within the Christian. How do we understand these texts? Or as Pelikan’s Aunt Vanda once asked him in her heavily-accented English, “Tall me, vot do you tink of Bible?”

The Search for God at Harvard

Ari L. Goldman

In 1985 Ari L. Goldman took a year’s leave from his job as a religion reporter for The New York Times and enrolled in the Harvard Divinity School. What began as a project to deepen his knowledge of the world’s sacred beliefs turned out to be an extraordinary journey of spiritual illumination, one in which Goldman reexamined his own faith as an Orthodox Jew and opened his mind to the great religions of the world. Join us in the Undercroft at 7:00 P.M.

The Middle School Youth Group will meet on December 13 for a Christmas service project and party. Bring a friend and join us at 7:00 pm upstairs in the Parish House. We will assemble soup kits and ornaments for clients of the Market Street Pantry, followed by a movie and treats. (Ugly Christmas sweaters are optional!) For more information, call Sally McClaskey at 740-587-0506.

THIRD ANNUAL

– opened with a devotional in honor of Veterans Day;

– received the following reports: Campaign Committee – After reviewing all three bids (that were very close to one another), they came to the realization that the addition project, as designed, was beyond our financial means. It was felt that, based on experience, another $600,000 – $700,000 that would be needed could not be raised. Accordingly, it was moved and seconded that the design phase be terminated on a going forward basis and that the Committee return to the Vestry with an alternative. The vote was unanimous with no abstentions. The Committee is already discussing Plan B that might include: the east entrance (pedestrian walkway access); front steps and cheek walls; west side windows and external pipes; accessible restrooms; sanctuary flooring; sanctuary cold air ducts; kitchen, nursery & pine room; parish house repairs. A new fund raising strategy would include the retiring of the Parish House debt. Rector – October is the busiest month in the life of a parish; St. Luke’s is on that dividing line between being a pastoral size parish and a program size parish, a difficult position. Average Sunday attendance is 170; Three financial matters are being worked on: closing the gap for the 2014 budget. With gifts we have received, that gap has been reduced to $10,000; the 2015 Stewardship Drive; the capital project as there will be several follow up matters to address as the result of the decisions made earlier tonight; Deacon Mary Raysa, along with Eloise DeZwarte and Harriet Stone, did a wonderful job of putting together a cocktail reception at Kendal. It was well attended by Kendal staff and the Eucharistic Visitors who serve many in that community. It was, however, a reminder of the number of parishioners we have who are aging and who can no longer come to church on Sundays; Property, Building & Grounds – The punch list from the recent walk-thru of the buildings is forthcoming. There has been a mouse problem in the Parish House and traps have been set. A downstairs Parish House toilet overflowed last week and a plumber was called in; Adult Education – The BYOB series has been canceled due to lack of participation from those who are not members of St. Luke’s, the target audience; Finance – The October 2014 Executive Summary was approved as submitted. It

was noted that response to the deficit reduction request has been good. A way to implement the Planned Giving program is being discussed. St. Luke’s 2015 Mission Share percentage (13.54%) remains the same as for 2014; Historic Preservation – The Committee is in conversation with the Robbins-Hunter Museum to co-host a lecture by Dr. Thomas Gordon Smith, chair of the architecture department at Notre Dame and a leading expert on Greek revival architecture.

How can you help? Three ideas!1. Consider a year-end gift to St. Luke’s to help close the budget deficit

completely. Please identify the purpose of your gift by putting “2014 Contribution” in the memo line of your check or on a note.

2. Make a year-end gift of appreciated stock – either to complete your 2014 pledge payment, make an additional year-end contribution, or pre-pay your 2015 pledge by December 31, 2014. Call or email the Parish Office – 740-587-0167 or [email protected] – for instructions on how to accomplish this. You may receive tax advantages by contributing appreciated securities.

3. If you haven’t done so already, return your 2015 pledge card. Lost your card? Unsure what you pledged in 2014? Call or email the Parish Office as noted above.

The Gift SeasonChristmas is the season of gifts. In the Twelve Days of Christmas we sing about gifts like a partridge in a pear tree, turtle doves and French hens. In O. Henry’s classic story we read about a young couple materially poor but rich in their mutual love. She secretly sells her beautiful hair and spends all the money on a stylish pocket chain for his prized watch while unbeknownst to her, he sells his watch to buy her a set of beautiful combs. These days we give each other many different Christmas gifts including the ever popular gift card.

The most meaningful gift of all was given to us 2,000 years ago when “God loved the world so much, that he gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him may not be lost but have eternal life.”

PEANUT BUTTER! PEANUT BUTTER! Just when you thought it was safe to let up on the peanut butter donations, the need is back with a vengeance. Can you help?

For our clients with dental issues we would like to stock oatmeal, cream of wheat, Rice Krispies, Chex cereals and any other cereal that would soften in milk.

(John 3:16). The best way we can honor Jesus during the Christmas season is to give one of the most important gifts He taught us to give – food for the hungry. There is no better gift we can give to our Market Street Pantry Clients.
