VISION: We, the St Liborius parish Community, seek to support each other in growing together in faith and sharing this faith with the wider community.

Next Week’s Readings Apostles 10:25-26,34-35,44-48 St John 4:7-10 John 15:9-17

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Live in me and let me live in you, says the Lord; my branches bear much fruit. Alleluia!

Responsorial Psalm I will praise you, Lord, in the assembly of your people.

Papal Prayer Intentions for April 2018 For Those who have Responsibility in Economic Matters That economists may have the courage to reject any economy of exclusion and know how to open new paths.

Life only fully makes sense when it is given as a gift. It becomes tasteless when it is lived for itself alone. 24th April

The Word Today Apostles 9:26-31 St John 3:18-24 John 15:1-8

THE VINE AND THE BRANCHES

Jesus wrote no books. He left no buildings or monuments behind. He

did something greater - he built a community. That was his

“monument”.

“I am the vine, you are the branches.” This was the image he used to

describe the community he had founded. It is a simple but profound

illustration of unity, closeness and interdependence.

The branches need the vine. That is obvious. Cut off from vine the

branches wither and die. Just as the branches need the vine, so we

need Christ.

But the vine also needs the branches. It is the branches that produce

the fruit. This means that Christ also needs us. We are his branches.

He depends on us to produce fruit in the world. Vines need to be

pruned every year if they are to bear fruit. If the courage to prune is

lacking, only leaves will grow.

Jesus didn’t ask us to be successful, only to be fruitful. In the Bible

the word success never appears. Instead we have the word “fruitful”

and the phrase “bearing fruit”. Success is a worldly term and comes

from strength and control. Fruitfulness, on the other hand, often

comes from the weakness and vulnerability, and frequently goes

unrecognised and unrewarded. A sick person may not be able to do

anything but could still be a very fruitful member of the community.

However, the most important thing of all is love. This is what makes

us fruitful. By this all will know that we are living branches of the

true Vine. By what exactly? By the bond that exists between us, and

the care we show for one another.

Many today ask, “Why should I go to church? Why can’t I just

worship God in my own way? Surely religion is about my personal

relationship with God?”

Yes, one can be a believer without the Church. And one can worship

God in one’s own way. But one will find that it is harder on one’s

own. Someone who joined the New York City Fire Department was

asked what difference it made to his life and he replied:

“Yesterday I had one brother; today I have fifty.”

From the earliest times, following Jesus was never just a

private, personal matter. Christians came together to profess

their faith in Jesus Christ, to witness to his resurrection, and to

live by his teachings. Belonging to a community enabled them

to support one another, by praying and worshipping together,

and by a loving service of one another.

The profound reason for this is given to us by Christ himself,

when he said, “I am the vine, you are the branches.” The vine

and its branches are one.

We are Christ’s witnesses. The witness of an individual is

powerful. But the witness of a community is more powerful

still. By this all will know that we are living branches of the

Vine - by the bond that exists between us and the care we

show for one another.

BENDIGO & DIOCESAN MATTERS

“Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.” – 1 JOHN 3:18 Regarding our Catholic faith, do you “walk the talk?” Do your actions reflect what it means to be a good disciple? Are you an active participant at Sunday Mass? Are you joyful when participating in parish ministry? Do you give gratefully and generously with your financial support to your parish and other Church needs? If not, it’s not too late to start!

MARIST SCHOOL Dear Friends and Families, Welcome back to all our families as we launch into Term Two. It has been quite clear from this first week that our students are keen to be back and have quickly settled back into positive work habits. Timor Leste - Our 10 students and two staff have settled into their pilgrimage to Timor Leste. After spending two days in Dili learning about the time of occupation by Indonesian Forces the group has now travelled down to Bacau and begun work with the students at the Marist sponsored school called Ponta Leste and with students at the Marist Teachers College. Today they travel up in to the high country to spend the next two days in the remote village of Kulugia where our fundraising focus will be. All reports are that they are having a very worthwhile experience. Basketball - Our basketballer s are cur rently on the road home from a very successful first National Marist Carnival. The girls went through the round robin program undefeated. They then progressed through the quarter finals and were beaten by Assumption College Kilmore by just one point in the semi-final. In the play off this morning for third the girls had a win against Sacred Heart College Adelaide. The boys did not get through to the finals after the round robin but in the lower section of finals they did very well and reached the final. They lost the final today so finished 17th overall. Combined professional learning day - Monday was an historic day at Marist as we hosted the staff of Catherine McAuley College for our first combined professional learning day. The day brought together over 260 staff. Marist staff gave the CMC staff a tour of our facilities and then all staff participated in two rounds of workshops conducted by their peers. After lunch we came together to celebrate the Eucharist which was led by Monsignor Frank Marriott. It was a very positive day and I am sure that many shared initiatives will grow out of the experience. Opening and 125 year celebrations - Monday is an exciting day at Marist. At 12:00pm we will conduct the blessing and opening of the extension to the Montagne Centre. Bishop Leslie Tomlinson will again join us to bless the facilities and the opening will be performed by our local state member Ms Maree Edwards MP and Provincial of the Marist Province of Australia Br Peter Carroll. Following this ceremony, we will move to our scared space for a special ceremony to celebrate 125 years of teaching by the Marist brothers in Bendigo. This will include an unveiling of a sculpture commissioned by the Marist Old Collegians and then our wonderful Sacred Space will be blessed by Bishop Les Tomlinson. Building update - The holiday per iod enabled us to move forward with some more landscaping. There is now more beautiful green grass around the Village green, the playground has been reconstructed, the shade sail is in the discovery garden and the new four square area is now completed. The transformation of the Village Green is now really taking shape. Construction has also begun on La Valla. Staffing updates - You may have noticed that we are currently advertising for some Educators to join us at the beginning of Term 3. This is to replace Mr Ian McArthur who is retiring and Mrs Kate Grange who has decided to step down from her position as Literacy Leader to allow more time to focus on family. Thankfully Kate will remain with us as an Educator. Today we say farewell to Mr Dan Williams. Mr Williams joined us in Term 3 last year and has been instrumental in setting up our Footsteps program for some of our disengaged young learners. Mr Williams has done a wonderful job in setting this up and we wish him well as he moves on to a new challenge at Girton Grammar. I am very pleased to announce that Mr Phillip Molloy will return to Marist at the beginning of Term 3. Mr Molloy left Marist at the end of 2017 to pursue a teaching role in Cairns. This has not worked out for the family and so Mr Molloy will return home and join us back at Marist. We welcome him back with open arms. Yours sincerely, Darren McGregor - Principal

ROSTERS

If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it was, and always

will be yours. If it never returns, it was never yours to

begin with. If it just sits in your living room,

messes up your stuff, eats your food,

uses your telephone, takes your money,

and never behaves as if you actually set it free in the first place,

you either married it or gave birth to it!
