An Introduction to the Spiritual Life: Three Ways of Praying

For this Lent we will explore together what exactly is the spiritual life according to our rich Catholic tradi-tion. We will especially learn how to pray the scrip-tures (Lectio divina), the psalms, and the Jesus Prayer which is also known as the Prayer of the Heart.

This will be presented for two more weeks by Fr. John Monestero on Thursdays, March 1, and March 8, from 7-9 p.m. in the youth room.

The Obedience of Abraham and Jesus God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacri-

fice, which would have been a partial burning with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a holocaust, a total burning of the sacrifi-cial animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire of-fering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abra-ham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demon-strated his obedience, that was enough. This story from to-day's scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacri-fices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God's own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucha-rist. Abraham's obedience foreshadows the obedience of Je-sus to God's promise of salvation. The obedience of Abra-ham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. St. Justin Lenten Dinners Soup Suppers on the Fridays of Lent,

from 7-8:30 p.m. As part of our Lenten tradition of the three practices of fast-

ing, prayer and almsgiving, you are invited fast and pray for a particular charity every Friday in Lent and the break the fast with a simple soup dinner at the parish. This gives us an opportunity to join together for the devotion of the Stations of the Cross at 6 p.m., then share a meal and donate to a particular charity of the week.

The dinners will be served under the shelter, and will be pro-vided and served by different parish groups each week. Donations received from the dinners will be designated for a different charity each week.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The second Sunday of Lent every year recalls the Trans-

figuration of the Lord. Since the fourth century, Mount Ta-bor has been the focus of devotion to this event. As moun-tains go, it is not particularly lofty, rising about fifteen hun-dred feet, within view of the Sea of Galilee and very close to Nazareth. Scripture doesn't identify the mountain, but in the year 348 Saint Cyril of Jerusalem said he preferred Mount Tabor to Mount Hermon as the site of the Transfiguration, and his opinion won. It has long been a strategic military site, and ancient fortresses are visible on the heights. Over the centuries, churches and fortified monasteries rose on the mountaintop, only to be destroyed by various invaders. Six hundred years ago, local Christians started to decorate the ruins with flags and banners on the Feast of the Transfigura-tion. In 1631, the Sultan granted permission to the Francis-cans to live on Mount Tabor, and they have been there ever since, discovering the ruins of an old Crusader church and constructing the present church on the site in 1924.

The top of the mountain is divided into Greek Orthodox and Latin (that's us) zones. At one time, tourists arrived on the summit by bus, but this is no longer permitted. Some ride bicycles up a challenging and winding path, while others take the four thousand three hundred steps constructed for Christian pilgrims in the fourth century. It's hard to imagine the fishermen following Jesus up this craggy mountain with-out complaint. Visitors will sympathize with Peter's plan to construct booths and stay put with Jesus, Moses, and Elijah for a while, enjoying the view, and planning the trip back down. --Rev. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Regresando a los tres pilares de la conversión, el ayuno es mucho

más que el simple hecho de no comer, es aprender a negarme a mí mismo para que ya no sea yo quien vivo, sino Cristo que vive en mí. Es el negarme de ciertas cosas para dar vida a los demás.

El ayudar es poner en práctica la caridad y la justicia social. Es buscar el cargar con nuestra propia cruz y ayudar a los demás con la de ellos. En otras palabras, es practicar la misma generosidad de Dios quien hace caer la lluvia sobre los buenos y los malos, es amar sin dis-tinción de personas.

Contemporáneamente, el orar es entrar en conversación con Dios, es recogerse para entrar en la presencia de Dios, con todo lo que uno es y todo lo que uno tiene, poniendo todo en las manos misericordiosas del Padre que nos ama.

Esta Cuaresma procuremos hacer lo que debemos hacer todo el año: ayunar, ayudar y orar. REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA El plan de Dios

Génesis 22:1-2, 9-13, 15-18 Abraham vive en un contexto religioso en el que, al ofrecer a Dios su hijo, también recibía una des-cendencia numerosa y un territorio. El punto cen-tral de esta narración es el hecho de que el Dios que acaba de descubrir Abraham no es como los dioses circundantes y no pide sacrificios humanos. La prohibición establecida en Levítico confirma que esto sucedía en Israel, por imitación de otras religiones. Otra explicación es que el fin de este relato es plasmar definitivamente la idea de que Dios rechaza el sacrificio de niños, reemplazándo-lo por un becerro; sin embargo el texto parece lejos de presentar que lo que está en juego es un rito habitual. Se nota que el propósito es probar la fide-lidad de Abraham. Se podría decir que el mismo Abraham esperaba una intervención de Dios que frenara esta acción, cuando les dice a sus criados que regresarán; pero esta tensión entre confianza e incredulidad está presente en todas las narraciones sobre Abraham. Romanos 8:31B-34 Las preguntas hechas en estos versículos de la car-ta hacen énfasis en la iniciativa divina de salva-ción, que es universal. Este proceso de salvación consiste en reproducir en cada uno de nosotros la imagen del Hijo. No se trata de predestinación, sino de plan de Dios de que todos se salven; no obstante, se necesita la respuesta de la persona. Marcos 9:2-10 Se hace aquí un paralelismo con Moisés el liberta-dor del pueblo y la entrega de las tablas de la ley. Moisés representa la ley y Elías los profetas; am-bos sintetizan el Antiguo Testamento. La propues-ta que hace Pedro a Jesús de quedarse en la monta-ña responde al miedo de ir a Jerusalén donde les espera dolor y sufrimiento. En Éxodo 24:16, nos encontramos con el pasaje en que Moisés sube al Sinaí a buscar las tablas de la ley y allí la nube cubrió la montaña durante seis días. Los seis días serían una alusión a esos días previos al encuentro de Moisés con Yahvé. La gloria de Yahvé es la manifestación luminosa de Dios en medio de su pueblo. Esa luz es la primera manifestación de Dios en la creación y aparece como zarza ardiente en Éxodo. La nube es también signo de la presen-cia divina, como en Éxodo 24:18. Nuestra cultura Es importante para nosotros entregar a Dios los primeros frutos de nuestro trabajo y también pre-sentar a nuestros hijos reconociendo que son de Dios antes que nuestros.

Reflexiones para la homilía Cuando viajamos a un lugar desconocido tomamos fotografías para preser-

var las imágenes por mucho tiempo. Muchas veces queremos así detenernos en momentos gozosos o importantes para nosotros y apresarlos para que no se nos escapen. La mejor cámara, sin embargo, la mejor manera de mirar y recordar las cosas, es el corazón. Recordar significa llevar al corazón algo y dejarlo ahí, en el afecto. No consiste tanto en mirar con los ojos de nuevo, sino en recuperar la memoria del afecto. El recuerdo de lo bueno que nos enseñaron los mayores y de los buenos momentos nos fortalece y ayuda para sobrellevar ciertos problemas y dificultades en la vida. El recordar lo que se ha hecho y logrado da esperanzas para hacer y vivir cosas buenas de nuevo.

Ese es precisamente el efecto de la Transfiguración. En la escena de la Transfiguración hay muchos recuerdos, aunque todo el mensaje está dirigido hacia el futuro. Primero, se recuerda la alianza en el Sinaí, la relación entre Dios y su pueblo. Se recuerda a los profetas con afecto. Es un momento tan importan-te y tan luminoso que los discípulos se quieren quedar para siempre, porque se sentían bien allí: en la seguridad del amor, la presencia y el pacto de Dios con su pueblo. Se trae al corazón toda la historia de Israel para que, por medio de reno-var esa presencia y contemplar la gloria de Jesús, puedan enfrentarse a la muerte. El recuerdo de la relación fiel con Dios y de la gloria en el monte de la Transfi-guración, ayuda al convencimiento de que la muerte no tiene la última palabra.

Quien ha mostrado tanta luz y es Hijo de Dios no va a ser sujeto de muerte definitiva. Por Él, que nos hace hijos de Dios, nosotros también podemos esperar el triunfo sobre la muerte. La Transfiguración es la prueba de la resurrección; es un primer gusto de lo que será la vida eterna en el cielo; es la primera constata-ción de que la promesa de Dios se cumple. Para eso no hace falta quedarse en la experiencia, sino llevarla en el corazón siempre. Como el recuerdo nos dice que Dios es fiel, nuestra respuesta ha de ser de fidelidad y de obediencia a su voz también. Los discípulos regresan a Jerusalén aunque temen lo que se avecina; pero la imagen de la gloria de Jesús, el recuerdo de la voz del Padre, ese momen-to de luz y cambio, los acompañará en los momentos duros que se avecinan para Jesús.

Para la reflexión ¿Qué momentos importantes de mi vida he querido detener para que no termi-nen? ¿Qué recuerdos de personas que ya no están conmigo me ayudan a mirar la vida con más esperanza? ¿Cómo los buenos recuerdos me han ayudado en momentos difíciles? ¿Cómo esa experiencia de bien me asegura que el poder de Dios puede vencer el mal y la muerte?

Reflexión sobre la Cuaresma

El Miércoles de Ceniza comenzamos el tiempo de Cuaresma. En la sociedad actual hablar de “tiempos litúrgicos” suena como algo distante, extraño. Si se hiciera una encuesta a pie de calle, nos encontraríamos con que bastante gente ignora qué es la Cuaresma…o a lo sumo le puede sonar a no comer carne los viernes. Por eso surgen varias preguntas:

1. ¿qué es y por qué de la Cuaresma? 2. ¿tiene sentido hablar hoy de Cuaresma? 3. ¿qué exige a un cristiano actual la Cuaresma? No se trata de hacer historia sobre la Cuaresma. Sí, de saber el porqué de la

Cuaresma. Podemos considerarla como un tiempo de preparación al acontecimiento

más importante para el cristiano: la Pascua de Jesús, es decir la celebración de su muerte y, sobre todo, de su RESURRECCION.

Por tanto la Cuaresma no es un fin sino un camino para llegar a la Pascua. Digo esto porque hay personas que dan más importancia a la Cuaresma que a la Pascua. Hay personas para quienes la Cuaresma significa mucho en sus vidas, por lo que aún hoy pueda significar para ellos el sacrificio, el ayuno por el ayuno y rezar mucho. Pero luego la Pascua del Señor pasa casi desapercibida.
