ACTING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE As we near the end of Term 1 I reflect on the wonderful efforts, achievements and involvement of students at the College. As we continually strive for excellence in our learning, and our teaching, I am both encouraged and overwhelming proud of the genuine desire our students show to improve themselves. Furthermore, as a member of a loving catholic community, I am inspired by the commitment of our students to those in need. Our Project Compassion efforts in recent weeks have been outstanding. As parents and educators I know that we all hope our children and students become young men and women who make a difference in their community. Nothing makes me prouder then to be able to share a phone call I received last week about one of our students.

“Mrs X phoned to praise one of our students. Mali Gilbert in Year 9 was in the same store in Port Macquarie the same time as Mrs X granddaughter. The granddaughter become ill and started vomiting. Mali, who is a Surf Life Saving member, jumped straight in and performed First Aid, holding her head as she vomited, reassuring her and making sure she was safe and comfortable . Mali then insisted on waiting for the ambulance so she could tell the paramedics what had happened. Mrs X wanted to reward Mali but she refused to accept anything and Mrs X wanted the College to know that while “teenagers receive a lot of negative comments Mali was an amazing young girl.”

Congratulations Mali on showing such maturity and courage in a difficult situation. Congratulations also to ex-student Monica Oriel who had the honour of singing the National Anthem in front of 100,000 spectators at the world cup Cricket final in Melbourne last weekend. I would like to take this opportunity to also congratulate the College Student Leaders who have led by wonderful example throughout Term 1 and to thank all staff members for their tireless dedication to student learning and well-being. REAL SCHOOLS RESTORATIVE PRACTICES - EXCITING NEW PARTNERSHIP

We would like to invite parents to be a part of this wonderful partnership. Parents have the opportunity to learn the same strategies teachers are using and to gain a greater understanding of the approach teachers will be using with your sons and daughters. Come along and gain some valuable tips in raising sons and daughters to be caring young individuals who are able to develop positive relationships as they enter into young adulthood.

On Tuesday, 21st April at 6:00pm Adam Voigt, founder of Real Schools, will be presenting to parents here at the College. The previous day, Monday, 20th April (Day One of Term 2) will be a pupil free day so that Adam can work with all staff and on Tuesday he will be in classes working with teachers and students.

YEAR 7 2016

It is already that time of year where we begin the enrolment process for our 2016 Year 7 students. Students in our Catholic feeder schools will receive their enrolment packs prior to the end of Term 1.

This week Emiy Rourke, Zac Roach, Siena Grima and Cameron Hunt along with staff members Mrs Lisa Freeman and Mrs Claudette Stace visited St Agnes’ Primary School and St Joseph’s Port Macquarie.

Students attending non-feeder schools are asked to call into the College office to collect a pack. If you are aware of friends or siblings wishing to enrol please let them know as places have filled over the past few years. The Year 7 2016 Enrolment Open Night will be held on MONDAY 27th APRIL in the College Hall.

WINTER UNIFORM

A reminder that all students are to return Term 2 in full winter uniform.

- Both boys and girls shirts must have the top button so that ties can be worn correctly. This includes ties for both boys and girls.

- Girls are also asked to ensure their skirts are the correct length, i.e touch the top of the knees NOT above the knee.

- All students are reminded that jumpers must be in good condition and students are not permitted to wear jumpers that have frayed or holey cuffs.

- We would also ask that any student who began the year in incorrect shoes, i.e rubber toed and others that are not ALL leather, plain black, polishable shoes need to have the correct ones for the commencement of Term 2.

- Holidays are also a common time for piercings and new hairstyles. We remind parents and students to check the diary to ensure new trends meet college standards.

Finally I warmly invite all members of our College community to celebrate Easter in St Agnes’ Parish by joining in the celebrations listed on the following page. On behalf of Jim I wish students, staff and families a peaceful and happy Easter holidays. Cath Eichmann Acting College Principal

FROM THE LEADER OF CATECHESIS AND SCHOOL EVANGELISATION Baptism in our Chapel Last Friday afternoon the Hunter children, Tahlia (Year11) Torren (Year 8) and Jasmine (St Agnes’ Primary) were Baptised by Father James in our College chapel. Family, friends and staff members were there to welcome them into the Christian community. The outdoor fountain was used as the baptismal font.

Easter Liturgy The term ended with a moving liturgy presented by the students in Mr Ryan and Miss O’Brien’s Year 9 RE class. Students were involved with preparing a stained glass backdrop, readings and prayers, a drama presentation and choosing a video clip depicting the final days leading up to Easter. The focus was on the joy of the resurrection. We were pleased to host the residents of our aged care facilities in St Agnes Parish for the liturgy followed by a tour of the college and morning tea. It was wonderful to see our students being such wonderful hosts. Thank you to all the students involved, Mr Ryan and Mrs O’Brien and Jordan our Youth Ministry Officer.

Hastings/Macleay Deanery in partnership with the CSO is proud to present the first CSYMA “LEAD Conference “ for the Lismore Diocese. LEAD is an initiative started by CSYMA (Catholic Schools Youth Ministry Australia) and was first held in Canberra earlier this year with much success. LEAD invites student youth ministry leaders as well as CSYMA religion teachers with the aim of equipping them for youth ministry leadership. The conference is made up of two major aspects, the first being the enrichment and growth of faith within the individuals and the second being the development of skills used to portray faith and spread the gospel message to youth in new and engaging ways. The conference will be held from Sunday 26th – Monday 27th of April, at the St Agnes Parish Youth Hub Although the conference itself is open only to senior school students, there is a Youth Mass/Rally being held from 5:00 until 8:30 on the Sunday night, this is open to all and is a great way to meet the up and coming youth leaders from the Lismore Diocese. I hope to see you there! Yours Sincerely Jordan Hodge YMO, St Joseph’s Regional College

MESSAGE FROM THE PARISH ADMINISTRATION OFFICE EASTER When we hear the word “Easter” we probably think with delight about holidays, having a weekend away, Easter eggs and generally a time of celebration. At Easter we remember Jesus. We remembered how he suffered and was put to death and above all how he rose again. We remember with faith. God, our father loved us so much, he sent his son Jesus to live among us, to share our lives, to share our suffering and to share our death. Most importantly he was raised to new life. That is the joy of Easter. Despite the darkness of the suffering and death of Jesus, there is light and hope because of his resurrection. This is why we have a holiday. This is why we give each other the gift of an Easter egg – we are giving new life to each other. Wishing you a very happy Easter and the blessings of the risen Lord. John McQueen Coordinating Executive Officer Parish Education

PARENT ASSEMBLY YOUR SUPPORT OF PARENT ASSEMBLY ASSISTS

US TO CONTINUE OUR SUPPORT OF PARENTS

Through your valued input and feedback, we try to identify and address some of the needs of parents in our parish schools. Parent Assembly events are developed and provided in response to these needs. Please support these events so we can continue to reach out and support our school parents in the areas of Faith Enrichment, Networking and Support, Parenting Education and Advocacy. We would really appreciate your feedback on topics that may be of interest to parents or any other ideas that may help to continue to build our sense of community and partnership within our school. TUTORING UNSW MEDICAL STUDENTS TUTORS FOR STUDENTS We have just formed an exciting partnership with the University of NSW Rural Medical School students and the College. A number of parents often request details of tutors who are available to provide extra one-on-one tuition and support for their sons and daughters. Below is a list of University students studying Medicine here in Port Macquarie who are looking for tutoring opportunities. Parents may contact the student directly to make arrangements and negotiate fees, times, days, venue etc. All arrangements and agreements are between the parent and the tutor however we would advise parents to be conscious of ensuring the tutoring is in an open environment. For students in Years 7-9 we also have some Year 11 & 12 students available for tutoring work. Please contact Cath Eichmann for details. If a venue is required, University of NSW Medical tutors or current SJRC senior student tutors may use the College Homework Hub for tutoring between 3.30-4.30pm Monday -Thursday (ONLY). The venue must be arranged through Mrs Cath Eichmann (Assistant Principal - Pastoral) at the College prior to this commencing and necessary paperwork completed by the tutor. Unfortunately other external tutors cannot use the College as a venue.

NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NUMERACY 2015

In May 2015 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools. The results of these tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indication their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard. Background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained. The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 12 -14 May 2015.

For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school. Students should bring their calculator, a HB pencil and eraser to school for use on these days. Additional information about NAPLAN can be found at www.nap.edu.au/NAPLAN/Parent_Carer_support/index.html. 2014 Overdues This week, the office will start billing students for books overdue from 2014. If you find a billed resource, please send it in with a copy of your receipt so that a refund can be arranged. Thank you all for your cooperation in this matter. Sign-out Procedure If a student departs the College, they must collect a sign-out sheet from the College office.
