ST. JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH
From the Pastor’s Laptop
Father Mark Wagner Today is the Feast of
the Ascension and the readings speak about time and our use of time. J u s t b e f o r e J e s u s ascended into heaven, His disciples asked whether He would establish His Kingdom "at this time." Then Jesus responded: "It is not for you to know the times or seasons…." Jesus then proceeded to tell them how they should use their time on Earth: "You will be my witnesses."
T h e R i s e n J e s u s appeared to His disciples for only a short period of time (forty days) before He ascended into heaven. God preferred to leave it to
us here on Earth to go "everywhere" and be His witnesses "to the ends of the Earth." Eventually heroic witnesses like blessed Junipero Serra came to the "end of the Earth" which is California!
Others bore witness by giving their lives (the Greek word "martyr" means "witness" ).
The world is big; Modesto is big. How can we make good use of our time to convince everyone of the truth? I hope everyone will attend our free "Time Management Seminar" which will help each of us to be good stewards of the precious gift of time. If we learn to use time more efficiently, we will transform our world more effectively!
"It is not for you to know ..."
MODEST DRESS IN CHURCH With the hot weather here, we need to remind
everyone of the importance of dressing appropriately in the house of God. Please avoid short dresses or shorts, spaghetti straps, and any other immodest attire which
does not cover the shoulders, back, and cleavage. We ask that men avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless
shirts. Thank you for wearing your Sunday best!

I n addition to the promptings of St. Juliana and Our Lord to develop a special worldwide feast day in honor of the
Blessed Eucharist, Pope Urban IV was also presented with a miracle in 1263. The Miracle of Bolsena. Peter of Prague, a German priest, during a pilgrimage to Rome, stopped at the Church of St. Christina there to offer Mass. While he was a holy and devout man, he harbored doubts about the Real Presence - doubts which were completely resolved when the Host he consecrated during that Mass began to bleed. He rushed to meet Pope Urban IV in Orvieto, bringing the Host with him. The miracle was declared, and the Host is still on display at the Cathedral of Orvieto today. In response to both St. Juliana and Fr. Peter, Pope Urban IV published a Bull, Transiturus, in 1264, which made the Feast a part of the calendar. Processing through the community with the Blessed
Sacrament on the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ is now a venerable Church tradition and is still held throughout the world, with all the regal splendor and rich traditions of years past. In his Apostolic Letter, “Mane nobiscum Domine,” Pope St John Paul II, echoing the fervent devotion of popes past, urged all
Catholics to participate in Corpus Christi processions as a public profession of their faith in the real presence of Christ in the Holy Sacrament. We at St. Joseph’s responded to that call and began processions as part of our liturgical calendar. Though the feast was still celebrated, due to various reasons the procession itself fell to the wayside. Harkening to our sacred heritage and tradition, we are proud to announce that we have resurrected this feast’s procession in honor of the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist! We have answered the call to follow Him and moreover to evangelize to others through that call by a most public declaration of our love and faith. Show others that Christ, the Eucharistic King, in His most Real Presence, is here for them as well and through your communal expression of faith, love and kinship they, too, will see a most exquisite glimpse of Heaven!
"The Mother - The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral --- a dwelling place for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby's body. The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God's creative miracle to bring new saints to heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature. God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation. What on God's good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother."

Parish Stewardship — a way of life

A gift that God blessed us with is having as a part of St. Joseph`s music ministry our “Cherubim” Children`s Choir. For 13 years we watched these wonderful children, ranging from 7 to 15, singing glory to God! They work hard practicing every week with their leader, Madeline Deardorff, our new conductor and cantor, talented musician, to sing at the 12:00 noon Sunday Mass, Christmas and Easter pageants, First Holy Communion Masses, parish`s concerts, music ministry retreats and trips.
Just recently, on May 2nd, as her first big event at St. Joseph, Madeline Deardorff prepared and conducted the choir for “Blessings breakfast.” Cherubims entertained our parishioners for several hours with great success, presenting a program with the wide range of music from Catholic hymns and “Ave Verum” Mozart to the Broadway musicals and contemporary Christian songs. These 25 members of the choir, 3 cantors: Gabriela Nazareno, Iraya Cress a n d M e a g a n J o s e p h , a n d instrumentalists – flutist Madeline Wunschel and violinist Hellen Nuen, are to be commended for their great dedication to the church and love for music!
Thank you, Cherubims, for supporting our music department and all your work that you do for God and His people! “Cherubim” choir is inviting children to join our welcoming and joyful music family to bring gifts of song and inspiring music to our liturgy.
Also, we are very excited to announce that this summer, July 16-17 (Thursday-Friday), with the participation of Cherubim children`s choir we are planning to lead our first at St. Joseph`s Summer Music Camp. Children, ages 7-13, will learn sacred music basics, Gregorian chant and European notation, traditional church hymns and contemporary Christian music, and much more… Check at the church office regarding the registration for the camp.
