FAMILIAR INSIGHTS Spiritual teachers tend to repeat themselves, and to repeat other teachers. Maybe there really aren’t that many different truths to tell. Just a lot of slow, sleepy human beings—like us—who need to hear the basics over and over. Consider today’s readings. People complain God isn’t “fair,” and Ezekiel answers that God is more than fair. People choose their own fates, and people can change. Even evildoers can turn, do right, and live. “Actions speak louder than words.” A fresh new insight? Hardly. Paul tells the Philippians that he would truly be encouraged if those who claimed to be believers would, in fact, look to others’ interests and not their own. “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” A novel idea? I don’t think so. In Jesus’ story of the farmer and his sons, everyone knows that the one who said he wouldn’t work—but did—is way ahead of the one who said he would work—but didn’t. “Talk is cheap.” Heard that before?

STEWARDSHIP WAY OF LIFE

SUNDAY COLLECTION (9/20): $3,161.00 ONLINE GIVING (9/20): $1,385.00 WEEKLY AMOUNT NEEDED: $6,125.00 OVER/UNDER: —$1,578.18 # OF ENVELOPES & ONLINE: 99 (of 394)

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT In today’s Second Reading, St. Paul calls us to look out for the interests of others in addition to our own. What would the world look like if none of us cared for one another? As Christian stewards, we are called to share of our time, talent, and treasure with those around us. How can we work to think of others more, while still being respectful of ourselves? This is an important characteristic of any Christian community.

KEEPING SAFE AT MASS As we know, COVID-19 has been increasing again in our state. To protect ourselves and others when coming to Mass, wearing a face mask is very highly recommended. It is one of the best ways to help stop the spread whenever we are in public. If you are in need of a face mask or forgot yours, disposable ones are available in the Narthex. Hand sanitizer can also be found there. Safe distancing and proper safe environment protocols will be in place.

DISPENSATION FROM OBLIGATION TO ATTEND SUNDAY MASS The Catholic faithful who reside in the Diocese of Youngstown and all other Catholics in the diocese and especially those who are sick, or at high risk of becoming sick continue to be dispensed from their Sunday obligation until further notice. If not attending in person, parishioners are encouraged to view Mass on tv or online.

May these families find comfort and healing, knowing that their loved one now lives forever with our Lord.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The sacrament of penance has a long and difficult history. The Church sometimes struggles with how best to be faithful to the image of an all-forgiving God. Once a very public rite with publicly visible participation on the part of the penitent, it became in time a very private matter. By the fourteenth century, when a prayer of absolution and a laying on of hands was still required in sacramental confession, theologians were saying that even that was too much liturgy. All that was required was confession itself, and the sacramental words Ego te absolvo, or “I absolve you.” In 1614 the Council of Florence tried to flesh out this bare skeleton, requiring that if possible the priest should wear a stole, that the confession should be in church, and that there be questions about the person’s state in life, occupation, and last confession. This is the first time the Church recommended that the penitent and priest be separated by a grill, thereby eliminating the ritual laying on of hands once so central to the sacrament, substituting the priest’s raised right hand in blessing. This is the rite that remained in force until the sacrament became the subject of very stormy debates at the Second Vatican Council, leading to a major reform in 1974 that is still only partially received.

Parish Message Board

During these difficult times, human contact with our fellow parishioners is priceless. Even with churches cau t iou s l y r e o pe n in g , ma n y parishioners are staying away from public worship out of concern for their own health as well as the safety of others. Many are receiving the bulletin via email or online through our parish website.

To help keep the sense of community that we all so love about St. Joe’s, we’re offering this bulletin space for folks to share messages. This can be messages to each other or to the parish at large, words of encouragement, “how are you doing?”, “feel free to contact us”, announcement of a birth, special birthday, or other special occasion, or just saying how much you miss things. The possibilities are endless.

If you’d like to post something on this bulletin m e s s a g e b o a r d , s i m p l e e m a i l [email protected] or call the Parish Office (330-274-2253).

PORTAGE COUNTY DIGITAL DOCTRINE This year due to COVID-19 we are not going to have our traditional Dinner & Doctrine. The deanery got creative and created Digital Doctrine. Like the new Portage County Deanery Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/PortageCatholic) where it will be live streamed. Or you may contact our Director of Religious Education, Peg Haney ([email protected]) to receive a Zoom Link via email.

The first session will be held on Tuesday, October 13, at 7:00 p.m. Fr. John Jerek, Vicar for Clergy, Diocese of Youngstown, will present "The Catholic Conundrum ~ Vote 2020.” Faced with a complex election season, there is no single candidate that embodies the whole of Catholic teaching. How should the individual Cathol ic discern the faithfu l response when voting? Join us online for an interactive discussion on this important issue.

TRUST IN GOD During a time of crisis or uncertainty, we may find ourselves struggling with fear and anxiety. This is a natural reaction. But St. Paul reminds us in his Letter to the Philippians to “have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (4:6). Then, he assures us, “the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (v. 7). With steadfast prayer and thanksgiving, then, we do our best to put our trust in the Lord. Let our actions reflect the trust and peace that can only be found in him. Stay close to Jesus and the Blessed Mother in prayer, asking that those who are suffering from the disease or from any related anxiety may find healing and peace. One way to get through these trying times is to reach out to others. A phone call, email, a note, or even a distanced visit could make a difference. Touch base with your family, friends, neighbors, and fellow parishioners to stay connected.

FORMING CONSCIENCES FOR FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP In their statement on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. Catholic bishops lift up various issues of different moral weight and urgency. Some issues they mention include: addressing abortion, euthanasia, racism, the use of the death penalty and imprudent resort to war; protecting the fundamental understanding of marriage as the life-long and faithful union of one man and one woman; achieving comprehensive immigration reform; caring for our common home; helping families and children overcome poverty; providing healthcare while respecting human life, human dignity and religious freedom; and establishing and complying with moral limits on the use of military force. IMPOSSIBLE Start by doing what is necessary, then do what is possible; suddenly you are doing the impossible. —St. Francis of Assisi MANTUA FREE CLOTHING GIVEAWAY NEEDS HELP The Free Clothing Giveaway at the old Mantua Center School has been going strong for six years. During the COVID outbreak, it had to close down. The last giveaway was on August 8. Unfortunately, the current space is not working out as organizers would like. They are trying to find a new venue as they feel Portage County has a great need for this ministry. Not a lot of space is needed—just one or two rooms to sort, leave the clothes, and use for the giveaway. In the past, this event was held four times a year. Funds to rent a whole building are not available, but the hope is to find somewhere close to Mantua to hold these in the future. If you know of any place that could be used for this event, please contact Lynn Kelley (330-990-8912). Thank you in advance for any help. God Bless. —St. Joseph Cares HE HUMBLED HIMSELF AND BECAME OBEDIENT If the Lord invites you to follow Him in humble obedience as a priest or in the consecrated life, how will you respond?
