May God bless you for your generosity!

“And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.” These words are familiar. They are included in the prayer “The Our Father” because God knows that we all face spiritual warfare in our daily lives.

God does not tempt us, but we allow ourselves to be tempted by listening to the Evil one or our own spirit as St. James says in his letter chapter 1:12-14. In the first letter of Peter chapter 5:8-9 and St. James 4:7, we are invited to turn to God for help.

Many people do not like to talk about the devil or may not be fully aware of his workings in our daily lives. Pope Benedict XVI wrote, “The more one understands the holiness of God, the more one understands the opposite of what is holy, namely, the deceptive masks of the devil” and Pope Francis said, “The presence of the Devil is on the first page of the Bible, and the Bible ends as well with the presence of the Devil, with the victory of God over the Devil.”

I am bringing this up because we are facing spiritual battles and sometimes we may cooperate with the enemy. First, we need to acknowledge that the devil exists. Then, we need to see if our actions lead us or others toward God and the community, or away from God and the Church.

The USCCB is releasing a book by Pope Francis titled “REBUKING THE DEVIL”. I would encourage you to get one and to be informed.

“And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil” can mislead us. In the Greek, what we use as one word means both "do not allow us to enter into temptation" and "do not let us yield to temptation." It is clearer and more precise since it is not God that leads us into temptations. The French Bishops and many French countries have changed the line, “Lead us not into temptation," to the equivalent of "do not let us enter into temptation .”

I would also encourage you to see Pope Francis’s audiences these past weeks on his reflection of the Our Father. On May 15th, in his audience he talked about the last line of the Our Father.

As we celebrate Ascension this Sunday and look to Pentecost, let us ask God to send his Spirit in our hearts that we can hear his word and be attune to what is around us.

Some conservative Catholics and even members of the clergy do not like Pope Francis but he is one that has spoken the most about evil. Read and listen to his teachings on the love and mercy of God.

WINGED FAITH Faith furnishes prayer with wings, without which it cannot

soar into Heaven. --St. John Climacus

Prayer to the Holy Spirit Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. Lord, by the light of the Holy Spirit you have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit help us to relish what is right and always rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. ~Amen.

FOCUS FEATURE

FAITH FORMATION

Religious Education Teachers/Aides:

The goal of Religious Education Teachers and aides is to

share our faith with our youth through curriculum, prayer,

discussion, and Sacraments. You do not need to be an

expert in the faith to teach, only a willingness. All

materials are provided to you to help you in teaching.

Classes are held Wednesday night at 6 PM as listed on the

schedule. Classes run from September through March.

Please consider volunteering and passing our faith on to

our youth. Must attend Protecting God’s Children. Contact Janet Litterio at 708-301-0214.

Children’s Liturgy:

The Children’s Liturgy Leader helps our little ones

understand the readings and the message taught that week

in an age appropriate manner. The Leader waits until the

Celebrant announces it’s time for the children’s Liturgy.

The leader then goes up and receives a blessing with the

children, takes the book, and leads the children to the

meeting room. Training is provided. There is no children’s

liturgy during the summer. Must attend Protecting God’s Children. Contact Janet Litterio at 708-301-0214.

Evangelization and Faith Formation: (EFFC)

The Evangelization and Faith Formation Commission of

Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish, is called to pass on

our faith as part of our Baptismal vocation to be the Light

of Christ to others, and to cultivate the one family of God.

Centered in Eucharist and prayer, we search for God in our

community by sharing our lives, goods and spiritual gifts

with each other and the people of God.

We do this by providing evangelization and faith formation

opportunities for all ages of our community.

Some aspects of the EFFC are:

Advising the pastor in faith formation from the womb to

the tomb.

Motivating the parish community to participate in faith

formation.

Motivating parishioners to be evangelizers.

Assuring that faith formation needs of each age group is

being served.

To promote the dignity of the human person, the

importance of the family, and the common good of our

society to make the values of the Gospel the values of

society.

Our EFFC meets eight months/year. Please contact Judy Keating at 773-580-5654 if you would like

further information.

The Good Samaritans are looking for much needed

volunteers to help with their homebound ministry. We

have been receiving more requests to visit. We have few

ministers that are seeing multiple homebound and some

several times a week. If you are retired, or available any

days during the week or weekend please consider helping

the homebound of our parish. This ministry means so

much to them to be able to receive communion and spend

a few minutes socializing as often times they are lonely. A

few minutes of your time can impact their life immensely.

As our mission statement promotes, we are called to be the

Light of Christ and to celebrate the

sacraments at home with family and

sharing our joy and responding to the

needs of others.

Please call Fran Osajda for more

information at 708-873-1814.

School is out for the SUMMER!!

Remember we have a paper recycling bin in our parking lot if you need to throw away old school papers. You

can also recycle catalogs, magazines, newspapers, junk mail, office papers, fax papers, notebooks, and folders.

We also have a clothing and shoe recycle bin as well! Please do not leave bags

outside of the bin as they get rained on.

Thank You

Parish Pastoral Council

Congratulations to Jennifer Burke and Mary Flanagan. They

are our new members of the parish council and will begin

their three term in the fall.

Many thanks to Parish Council

President Lea Massaro for her time

and talent, and service to the council

and parish.

Are you celebrating your 25th or 50th Wedding Anniversary?

The Diocese of Joliet will hold its Forty-first Annual Wedding Anniversary Mass on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at

the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet. If you are celebrating either your 25th or 50th anniversary this year, please contact the parish office no later than Tuesday, June 4th so that we may submit your name to the Diocese for a formal invitation. Those celebrating over 50 year anniversaries do not receive a formal invitation, but will be able to register to attend at a later date.

Please Help Out

During the summer months, it is difficult to fill all the ministry positions for the weekend as many people go away on vacation or summer homes. Therefore, if you are a minister please check the sign in sheet and board prior to Mass and help out if you can, even if it is not your assigned week. We appreciate all the volunteers it takes to make the Mass a special celebration each week.

A BLESSING BEFORE SUMMER VACATIONS

Take time to claim your strength;

they are gifts of God.

Take time to have fun;

it's God's way of teaching you your strengths.

Take time to grow yourself;

only you can grow you.

Take time to trust yourself;

God trusts you.

Take time to be self-reliant;

it is better than being dependent.

Take time to share with others;

they will bless you, and you will bless them.

Take time to have hope,

you are a child of God.

Let's put ourselves into the hands of the Lord,

and pray that God will bless us and our families

during the wonderful months of summer.

May we all help make our home a place of relaxation,

joy, love, peace and safety.

May we be generous and considerate,

not thinking only about ourselves,

but helping others enjoy the blessings of a summertime.

Lord God, Creator of all things,

guide our steps and strengthen our hearts,

during these months of summer and vacation days.

Grant us refreshment of mind and body.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
