MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

In Baptism we are reborn as children of God, made members of His Church, and heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. With this in mind, we welcome these children of God who were baptized the weekend of October 4, 2015: Oliver Aquirre son of José & Bessy; Justin Alexis Cruz son of Ezequiel & Sonia; Isaias Andres Perez son of Gralino & Tita; Kevin Daniel Sorto son of Yessenia; Valentina Ramos daughter of José & Doris; Richard Aaron Luis Webber son of Richard & Anna;

The flowers on the altar this weekend were donated by the Michael Logan family.

Peace and good! As we continue to reflect upon Pope Francis’ visit to America, we are reminded to be less critical of one another and to be more welcoming to one another. During the Papal Mass in Philadelphia, Pope Francis said: "Our common house can no longer tolerate sterile divisions." Pope Francis departed on a positive note and expressed a spirit of "gratitude and hope." He asked that God bless America. As our pastor, spiritual and moral leader, Pope Francis challenged us to meditate and act upon the following points:

• We have divided ourselves needlessly in the name of political ideology;

• We see too much through the eyes of our politics and not through the eyes of our faith;

• We have obligations to one another, imposed by Christ. We need to divide and judge less and love one another more;

• We have specific obligations to care for the environment, the poor and disenfranchised;

• We have a duty to minister to those in prison as well as the victims of crime; and

• Religious freedom, human life, and the institution of marriage must be protected.

Pope Francis’ message was delivered in a direct and articulate manner throughout his homilies and speeches. As the Pope has asked us: Let us pray for him. Let us also pray that the nation reflects and acts upon his message. In the peace of Francis of Assisi,

The Parish staff wishes to thank the following parish ministries: We thank our parishioners who joined the Friars and Secular Franciscans for the Blessing of the Animals, Transitus, and Solemnity of Francis of Assisi this past weekend. We also thank the parish staff who planned and prepared for the feast day celebration. A special thanks to the facilities staff and music ministers. Saint Francis Assisi – Pray for us! We thank our parishioners for their support of the Parish Facility Fund Collection. Your contributions assist us in maintaining and caring for our parish buildings and grounds. Know that we are grateful for your prayers and support. We thank the parents of our youth of the parish who attended the meeting on the Sacrament of Confirmation this past Monday. Be assured of our prayers and support as you journey with your child as they prepare to celebrate this life giving sacrament. We also thank the staff of the Parish Religious Education program and Saint Joseph School for their planning and participation in the meeting.

LADIES’ TREAT YOURSELF! Women’s Weekend Retreat, October 16 – 18, 2015

TIME’S RUNNING OUT! DON’T MISS OUT

“Come Away and Rest Awhile”. Each year, women of the parish go on retreat at Loyola On The Potomac, a Jesuit Retreat House in Faulkner, Maryland. This year’s retreat is entitled “The Way”. The retreat is conducted in an atmosphere of prayerful

silence and is based on the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola. It is open to any woman who desires to grow in her relationship with God through prayer. The retreat includes time for prayer, worship, and personal reflection. For registration options and other retreat information, please take a brochure from the retreat folder at the religious goods stand in the back of the church. You can also go online to register at

http://www.loyolaonthepotomac.com/about/calendar/ If additional information is needed, you many call the retreat house (301-392-0800) or Kathleen Schabacker (703-437-0072).

ST. JOSEPH’S OUTREACH EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TEAM

Do you want to feel the peace Our Lord promised?

Any parishioner who is sick or homebound can call (703) 880-4343, leave your name and your phone number, and we will contact you to arrange for a Eucharistic Minister to visit you and deliver the Eucharist. If you are an Eucharistic Minister and can join other Eucharistic Ministers in taking communion to the homebound, Reston Hospital, Kendrick Court Retirement Home, Arbor Terrace Senior Apartments, Sunrise Assisted Living, and Harbor House Senior Apartments, please call the Outreach Hotline at (703) 880-4343. Leave your name and phone number, and we will contact you about joining this ministry.

Peace and good! After much prayer, discussion, and discernment, we share the following information with you regarding our sacramental life at the parish. Effective November 1, 2015, the following two Masses will be removed from the Parish Mass Schedule:

Saturday morning Mass at 6:30 am; and Saturday evening Mass at 7:30 pm.

This decision was made after considering many different factors. Such factors included the parish currently having two full-time priests ministering with and to 3,654 families; the appointment of a third full-time priest not being appointed until the summer 2016; celebrating 11 Masses on the weekends (excluding Weddings and Masses of Christian Burial); Mass attendance at the Masses; etc. Know that we appreciate the presence and ministry of Father Pat here at the parish on the weekends. We also fully support and pray for him as he pursues his doctorate in liturgy as a full-time student. We have also been blessed with the presence and ministry of Father Chris when he was living in Washington, DC. We thank you for your understanding regarding this decision. May we continue to grow as a community of faith embracing the Gospel. In the peace of Francis of Assisi,

Father Tom Father Alberto Father Pat

THE YOUTH MINISTRY CORNER “Revolving Our Lives Around Christ”

Diocesan Youth Rally at Marymount University Oct. 18th : Every year the Office of Youth Ministry spon-sors RALLY as their largest outreach event that celebrates the Catholic faith and love of the Lord. St. Joseph’s youth ministry is planning to attend once again with the other hundreds of high school students. Rally has over eight hours of music, inspirational speakers, inflatables, food, and Sunday Mass with Bishop Loverde. RALLY is de-signed to be open to any high school aged youth wanting to attend; if you are a 9th-12th grader and want to partici-pate, please contact Mr. David Bristow at 703.880.4309/ [email protected].

NO CLASSES – COLUMBUS DAY There will not be any Religious Education classes on October (Sun.) 11th, (Mon.) 12th, and (Tue.) 13th in observance of Columbus Day. However, as communicated earlier through the green RE student folders we will have classes Saturday, October 10th (contrary to the calendar) but will not have classes on October 24th due to the HHS Home Coming Parade. ROSARY WITH THE DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION On October (Sat.) 17th, (Sun.) 18th, (Mon.) 19th, and (Tue.)

20th all Religious Education classes (K-12) will come together to pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary in Parish Hall C. This special event is a part of Catechism classes not only to expose our parish’s youth to a well-loved Marian devotion, but also to better familiarize them with the Gospel mysteries and basic prayers.

RCIA SPONSORS NEEDED

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process by which adults come into the Church. After meeting weekly for instruction (Wednesday 7-9 p.m.) and being introduced into the Catholic way of faith, life, and worship, the unbaptized will receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) during the Easter Vigil.

Every adult needs a sponsor. As a representative of the faith community, the sponsor is a companion on the journey to full membership. Sponsors attend the weekly sessions and participate in the liturgical rites. Sponsors offer advice and encouragement and grow together with their catechumen or candidate as they share the various experiences of the meeting: learning, sharing and growing in prayer.

Won’t you share your faith with someone who wishes to join the Church but has no one to journey with him? If interested you may contact Mr. Reyes Ruiz by phone at (703) 880-4332 or email him at [email protected].
