Dear Parents,
Welcome Back To Term 2
The term planner was sent home this week with the dates and events that
will be occurring at St. John’s this term. From time to time there are
changes to the planner and these are highlighted in the fortnightly news-
letter and on our website.
Launch of ipads
Without doubt last Wednesday nights launch of the ipad program will go
down as the best attended meeting in the history of St. John’s! It was
almost on a par with the Collingwood/Essendon ANZAC day crowd at
the MCG!
There was a real buzz around the school last Tuesday and Wednesday in
the lead up to the ipad collection meeting. The whole process went ex-
tremely well and is a credit to our e-learning team lead by Sarah Ander-
son with the support of Lesley Wood. Countless hours of preparation
went into setting up the ipads and having them ready for Wednesdays
launch.
Considering over 150 ipads were distributed to families there have been
relatively few problems. A number of families are still waiting on
’Apps’ and a comprehensive letter was sent home on Wednesday ex-
plaining the process to be followed for these to be accessed.
Staff are available before school to assist families that may be experienc-
ing ‘teething’ problems.
The ‘push out’ of apps will continue between 6-8pm each night to ensure
that all children have the 15 approved apps on their ipads with the plan
for formal lessons using these apps to start next Monday.
St John’s community can be rightfully proud that we are one of the first
schools in the Frankston area to launch the ownership of ipads for every
student in grades 3-5.
We will continue to inform parents of how the ipads are being used as a
resource/tool for learning in the newsletter, via class ‘blogs’ and on the
school web site.

Mother’s Day Mass and Morning Tea
Please note that the date advertised on last terms newsletter had changed to Friday, 9th May.
We invite our mums/grandmas to join us for Mass at 9am in the Parish Church followed by morning tea in the
hall. Our choir and junior school will entertain our mothers and they are guaranteed of a delicious morning
tea. Please return the acceptance sent home last week to assist with catering.
Peanut Policy
As most parents would be aware St. John’s discourages students from bringing food containing nuts to school.
We have many children who are allergic to nuts and in some cases this can be life threatening. Please be
aware when sending food to school for birthdays that the food doesn’t contain traces of nuts. Mixed boxes of
chocolates (i.e. Celebration packs) contain Snickers which have nuts as the main ingredient. Please check the
labels of any chocolate products that you send in to celebrate birthdays.
Bike Ed
Next week the grade 4’s start their bike ed program. This year the program will run for 5 weeks (Mon - Wed).
We are again appreciative of the generosity of Vic Roads and the Mornington Peninsula Shire for providing
the bike ed trailer free of charge. A letter explaining the program was sent home last Monday so please check
the bags and send back the permission slips. The children's bikes must be road worthy (i.e. Working bell,
effective brakes, tyres pumped up to correct pressure and chain lubricated). The children also require a safety
helmet.
Winter Uniforms
The official changeover date for winter uniforms is next Monday, 5th of May. The uniform shop is open
Thursday mornings at 9am.
A Very Special Concert
We are delighted to welcome back renowned singer and writer Andrew Chinn. Andrew will work with the
children next Thursday and then will present a concert at 6.30pm involving the children for their parents and
families. This will be a very special event and we would like all families to be present. The concert will be
for approximately 1 hour and will be held in the Church.
Winter Sport for Grades 5 & 6
Interschool sport for grades 5/6 starts on Friday, 9th May. Our first game is against Karingal Primary and the
games will be played at St. John’s except football which is played at Frankston East Primary. Sport will com-
mence at 11.30am. Come along and support St. John’s Jaguars.
Have a good week and enjoy your children.

PRINCIPAL
A Family
A Family is the most important unit in the world.
It is the core round which nations are built.
It is the foundations of any great society.
A family is love round the table.
A family is walking to church together.
A family is friendship laughing under the same roof.
A family is singing in the kitchen.
A family is children playing in the yard.
A family is light on the front porch on a dark night.
A family is a dog and a cat, grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins.
A family is cheering together when a victory is won.
A family is beginning gain when a cause is lost.
A family is a place where all members are free to be themselves.
A family is held together with the glue of love and cement of mutual respect.
A family is shelter from the storm, a friendly port when the waves of life become
too wild.
No person is ever alone who is a member of a family.
A family is a colony of heaven- right here on earth.

First Reconciliation
Our First Reconciliation celebration was a
very reverent and special time for our school
community. Some of our students have some
thoughts to share about receiving the Sacra-
ment.
‘At Reconciliation everyone had to talk to
Father. We sat down in the Church and Fa-
ther Alistair talked to us. When I confessed
to Father I felt nervous. I had to say a Hail
Mary. I got a present afterwards from my
Mum and Dad.’ Luke
‘On my Reconciliation, I was a bit nervous.
At first I went and confessed to Father and it
was not so bad. Father told me to say two
Hail Marys.’ Declan
‘Reconciliation was fun. I went to confess
my sins to Father. He told me to say a Hail
Mary.’ Darcy
‘When we did Reconciliation,
I told Father my sins and I put
my sheep on a wall. After the
liturgy, we had supper and a
big dessert.’
Catherine

to register. Students must use their username and password provided at the end of last term and go to http://www.education.vic.gov.au/prc/
If your child has misplaced their details, please see Lisa Kniese for this in-formation. The Challenge finishes in September, so there is still plenty of
time to read and achieve success. Happy reading!
Congratulations to those who returned their registrations promptly and were entered in the raffle for the Toys R Us voucher and gift packs:
3rd Farai Gambiza 2nd Blake Ames
1st Sarah Lewis Our next prize is for the class with the most students registered. They
will be receiving a special class lunch! This will be drawn on Friday 16th May.
Just a reminder, that all junior classes now have their literacy rosters out-side the classroom. Please consider whether you could possibly assist.
All adults working in our classrooms must have a current “Working with Children Card” that the office has sighted and photocopied. Please make
sure that you nominate as a volunteer at St John’s when applying for the card. Please feel free to see me if you need this process explained.

3/4 Art Centre Excursion
I had a great time when we went
to see the 13 storey treehouse.
I loved the part when the gorilla
eye was looking through the
window. I haven’t read the book
yet so it was an awesome
experience to see this right in
front of my eyes. I had great fun
seeing it.
Toby Lewis
I have never read the book
but now I’ve seen the play I
do want to read the book. I
laughed so much when the
flying cats were coming out
of the machine.
Annabelle Walker
The play was really funny! I liked the actor. My favourite part was when the big gorilla eye was staring at Andy and Terry! Gerard Comey
Library news:
The middle school attended the Frankston Arts Centre on Monday this week to watch a performance
based on the book ‘The 13-Storey Treehouse’ by Andy Griffiths & Terry Denton. The children were be-
mused by the storyline and a little overwhelmed by a giant gorilla that appeared from nowhere. The ac-
tors took the children on a wonderful imaginative journey...including the existence of mermaids (and a
merman), sea monkeys, sea monsters, monkeys, flying cats (or was that a canary?) and much more.
The children enjoyed themselves immensely and should be commended on their beautiful behaviour
(even when the actors asked them to be monkeys!).
It is hoped that the imagination theme explored by this play will remind the children of ‘...the places you
can go..’(Dr.Seuss) when you pick up a book.
I enjoyed the 13 story tree house because the boys did not
know there was a play on (but they were pretending).
My favourite part was when Val had to be the mermaid that turned into the sea monster and
the kittens owner. Thank you Mrs. Peters for organising the excursion.
During lunchtime this Thursday 1st May, Mrs Kniese
and myself will be available in the library to assist
children login to the Victoria Premiers Reading
Challenge. If you need any information about this
challenge please see the website below.
