St John's Church, Hurst Green Circular Routes

St John's Church – Built in 1835 on the edge of the village, the church plays an important role in the life of the local and surrounding community. The church is an active supporter of a wide range of life changing initiatives, helping both local and far afield causes. Activities include supporting the International Charity WaterAid – a charity aiming to secure clean water for everyone regardless of location or status and Fairtrade – St. John’s Hurst Green is a Fairtrade Church and an active participant within the village of Hurst Green, partnering with St. Joseph’s School and Stonyhurst College to secure Fairtrade status for the village.

The church has, for several years, secured recognition and awards for its work and activities concerned with environmental issues. The church holds a range of events throughout the year to raise awareness and introduce others to the importance and benefits of good environmental management and care. The church has been awarded the title Eco Congregation three times (it is awarded every 3 years) for its support of environmental affairs.

Hurst Green is a small village but boasts three pubs, the Bayley Arms, Eagle & Child and The Shireburn Arms. The 18th century Hurst Green economy was helped by four bobbin mills, all powered by the rapid waters of Dean Brook, which Route A follows. Look out for evidence today with remains of the mill race and sluice!

Stonyhurst College in Hurst Green is also worth a visit - a world famous Roman Catholic boys boarding college and splendid St Peter's Church. The magnificent buildings are set in extensive parkland with two huge ponds that were excavated in 1696. Route B skirts the edge of Stonyhurst and also takes in part of the Tolkien Trail – a 5.5 mile circular starting from Hurst Green. This walk explores the richly beautiful surrounding that inspired him.

The college houses a wonderful museum collection including a 7th century Gospel of St. John. Cromwell stayed here in 1648. In 1811 the building became the first public building to be lit by gas. Conan Doyle creator of Sherlock Holmes is among many famous ex scholars of the college. The college was the setting for the novel "The Hound of the Baskervilles".
