Newsletter No: 7 Term 1 Week 7
Week 7…… There is a bulldozer out the front working on the new car park and drop-off zone. Very exciting! The Multicultural Dress Up Day yesterday was awesome, thank you to our wonderful families for embracing the day and helping raise money for the Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. To date we have raised $303.35. Fantastic! Have you had a chance to check out our Garden lately? It is thriving at the moment with the help of the Green Thumbs Gardening Club members in particular the Grade One children. Be sure to check out the full report that will be featured in next weeks newsletter.

Dear Parents,
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
I hope you all enjoyed the Long Weekend .The end of
term is almost upon us. We finish with two four day
weeks concluding next Thursday 24th March. The
children finish at 2.25pm. School will resume
on Monday 11th April at 8.50am.
CROSSING THE ROAD IN RUSSELL STREET
It has come to my attention that some families
are crossing Russell Street near Nina Street. We
encourage all families to please use the crossing. If
you live on the Eastern side of Russell Street please
walk down and meet the children at the crossing
where the supervisor will take them across the road
safely. The number of children crossing the road
using the Crossing Supervisor is important for us to
secure her services. The City Council conducts
random checks on numbers and we need to have
consistency showing the need for the Crossing
supervisor. We worked hard to secure a crossing for
St John's so please ensure you use it with your
children and ensure safety for all.
GRADE 5/6 CAMP
Our Grade 5/6 children are heading away on Camp to
Roses Gap next week for three days. This is
an opportunity to enjoy each other's company away
from school and really get to know each other. Some
of the activities to enjoy are archery, abseiling
and canoeing. The staff attending are Kristie
Prendergast, Stacey Atkins, Damien Webster, Sharon
Easley and Lachie Barling. I'm sure they will have a
wonderful time. We wish them well.
HOLY WEEK PRESENTATION
Next Thursday 23rd March children from Grades 3/4
will present a short role play about Holy Week. This
will occur in the Stadium from 1.45pm. The Easter
Raffle will be drawn by the P & F after this and then
the children may leave with their parents.
PARTICIPATION LEVY
When you participate in activities or provide food
donations at the school it is your responsibility to fill
out the Participation Levy folder located on the bench
outside the office. Just a reminder that families need
to accrue 40 points and single parent families 25
points per year. Alternately you can opt to pay the
levy which is $200 (Accounts will be sent out in
Term 4). If you have any questions regarding the levy
or want to organise an activity for yourself for a
suitable time, please contact me.
WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECK
It is a government regulation that parents,
grandparents etc that assist in the classroom or
attend excursions have a Working with Children
Check. If you have one, please check the expiry
date and make sure it is current. It has come to our
attention that many of our parents WWCC have
expired. When completing your application
please ensure you enter our school under the
organisation section that you will be volunteering
at so we receive a copy of your WWCC number.
WELCOME TO THE 2016 SCHOOL YEAR
Unfortunately we have had to cancel the
Welcome to the 2016 school year BBQ/Picnic
that was scheduled for tomorrow night due to a
lack of numbers. The P & F will look into
running another social evening later on in the
year.
SAC MEETING
Our next School Advisory Council meeting
will be the Annual General Meeting and it is
scheduled for next Tuesday 22nd March in the
Meeting Room at 8.00pm.
That's all from me this week,
Regards,
Kathy Dalton

Multicultural Dress Up Day
Thank you for the support of the Multicultural
Dress Up Day yesterday. Please remember the
Project compassion appeal and the St Vincent de
Paul Lenten appeal.
RE News cont
Holy Week
The crowds have been talking about Jesus and as the
Passover nears he heads to Jerusalem with his
apostles. The people give him a rock star like
welcome by waving palms and throwing cloaks on
the ground before him; a traditional welcome
gesture usually only reserved for Royalty. It’s
no king on a huge white stallion with an army
behind him, but a 30 odd year old guy with some
mates wandering in with him riding on a borrowed
donkey. The symbolism in the Gospel accounts is
very powerful showing Jesus as our King and
Saviour but not of this kingdom. His kingdom is a
simple, just and all inclusive one. One where God
welcomes all. This Sunday, is the beginning of
Holy Week which starts with Palm Sunday. It will
be a good time to remember about The Last Supper,
(Thursday), the arrest of Jesus, The Stations of the
Cross when Jesus was crucified (Good Friday) and
the Resurrection on Easter Sunday.
St Vincent de Paul Lenten Appeal St Vincent de Paul provides another way to be
involved in Lent. Each week in the lead up to Lent,
families are asked to contribute the following
goods to be distributed to families in need in
Warrnambool. Thank you to the families who have
dropped in goods over the last few weeks. This week
is the final week to contribute. Items can be dropped
off at the office and we will take them to Mass on
Sunday.
This week - 14th March - Tinned Soup
Mass times for St Pius this weekend are
as follows:
Saturday: 6:00pm
Sunday: 10:00am
All Welcome!
Dear Jasmine,
I'm looking for some ideas to help my 5 year old
improve their friendship skills.
From Terry
Dear Terry, The bullying no way! website has some great resources and practical ideas on how to teach children social and emotional skills. They have also developed a free app designed for children from 3 to 8 years of age. The Allen Adventure app is a fun interactive story about Allen, a young visitor from another planet, who is new to school and learning how to get on with his Earthling classmates. Children can select narration or read the story themselves, touch the screen to make things happen in the story, and choose actions and scenarios for the characters. More information can be found : http://www.takeastandtogether.gov.au/under8/index.html Jasmine Families please note, next week I will be working Wednesday 23rd March instead of Thursday 24th March. Kind regards, Jasmine.
Dear Jasmine
Happy Birthday
This week we say “Happy Birthday” to
Bailey Kermeen, Lukas Phillips,
Kai Moloney Smith, Mason Osborne,
Mrs Easley and Mrs Freeman!
Bike Education
Last Friday the Juniors brought along their
bikes/scooters and helmets to school and
they were given some lessons in bike
education and safety. Nicole Wood from
Healthy Moves took the children for a
practical session and we thank her very much
for her help. Many thanks also to our Junior
parents who assisted as well as the Aides.
The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves
and it is great to see them excited about
something that is good for their health.
Below are a few snaps of the children in
action.
Sports
Last Thursday Fergus Kelson, Tom McCosker, Dan
Thornton and Curran O'Donnell represented
St John's at the Zone Swimming Sports held at
Warrnambool's AquaZone. All four competed in a
range of events and it was very pleasing that they
all gave their best efforts. Congratulations to the
boys for your amazing efforts. Well done to Fergus
who is going onto the next stage happening this
Friday in Ballarat. All at St John's wish you the
very best in your events. A big thank you to Mr
Barling and Natalie Fisk for assisting on the day.
The Student Leaders went out to Deakin Universi-
ty and joined together with lots of the other school
leaders, from Years 5 and 6, all the way up to year
12. We talked about being a good leader
and how you can demonstrate it in your own
community. A highlight was an inspirational talk
from Sarah Wall, a great netballer and founder of
the girl’s netball organisation “Jeanieboy.”
We now, as leaders at St John’s, have to come up
with a project that has to do with wellbeing and
health to help our community in any sort of way.
In July we have to make a two minute video to
report back to the congress. If you have any ideas
we’d love to hear from you. Just email Mr
Webster at
Stay tuned and we will inform how you can get
involved.
