Father Don’s Gospel ReflectionThe Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time — Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48

“…There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us. Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward.” John came to Jesus upset that someone was driving out demons in Jesus’ name. Why did this bother John? Did he feel that he could not do what that person was doing? Who gave John the authority to stop him? It is clear from Jesus’ response the person did nothing wrong. Jesus’ answer taught the apostles the proper approach to ministry. Do we sometimes respond like John did in today’s Gospel? Sometimes we might get the attitude that we are the only game in town. There has been more than one joke told about Catholics feeling they are the only ones going to heaven.

When I was in college, a girl I knew was a Mormon. She talked me into going to the service at her church one Sunday morning. She was the song leader, so I sat with her family. I couldn’t tell you the opening song now, but I knew it then and began to sing it without the book. When it was time to break out into study groups, I went to the inquiry group and had a friendly debate over some of the issues brought up. Later the pastor asked if I wanted to consider joining. I told him I was a Catholic studying to be a Franciscan Friar and didn’t think the formation director would approve of it. In retrospect, I learned a lot that day and had a deeper respect for the faith I saw in that community. I was accepted for who I was, not what I was.

Over the years as a priest, I have seen so many wonderful people that do humbling things in the name of Jesus Christ. I have seen powerful ministers shepherd their community and show the true compas-sion and love that they have learned from our Lord and Savior. I have witnessed many a faith com-munity reaching out to serve the needs of their communities. We should not spend time judging which religion is better than the other. John, in the Gospel, showed a little bit of jealousy when he saw the healing being performed. What he should have done at that moment is rejoice that the name of Jesus brought a person to being whole once again. If we understand what Jesus said today, that anyone who is for us can’t be against us, life should be simpler. Even in our own faith we have disagreements. We really should spend more energy in giving honor and glory to God. We should be grateful to Jesus for showing us the way to salvation. I am a Catholic priest because I have been called to serve the Lord in this manner. We all have to decide how we are called to be Christ to one another. Give that drink of water to someone this week. Have a great week!

Slavery by Another Name (Video)Monday, October 5, 7-9 p.m. in the ChapelSlavery by Another Name is a documentary that challenges one of America’s most cherished assumptions: The belief that slavery in this country ended with the Emancipation Proclamation. The film tells how even as chattel slavery came to an end in 1865, thousands of African Ameri-cans were pulled back into mandatory labor with shocking force and brutality. After viewing the 90-minute film, a half-hour discussion will follow. Later, on October 17 from 2–4 p.m., we will meet at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center (5440 Moeller Ave., Norwood, Ohio, 45212), with members of Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church of Bond Hill to discuss the message of the video and its relevance for today’s society. Please let Jerry Barney (777-6433) know if you plan to attend in case there is a cancellation, and also if you would like to carpool to the meeting.

Abortion & ReconciliationMuch of the news coverage about Pope Francis ex-tending to all priests the faculty to absolve the sin of abortion and remove the automatic excommunica-tion that can incur has been misleading and confus-ing. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati wants to make it clear that our priests have already had this faculty for many years. No one who has received absolution for this sin from a priest of the Archdiocese, acting as the instrument of God’s mercy, should doubt the validity of the sacrament. No priest can engage in sacramen-tal ministry without being granted faculties to do so by the local bishop. What is included in those facul-ties is detailed in writing. Priests of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, as permitted by canon law, have long been granted by the Archbishop “the faculty to absolve the sin (of abortion) and to remit the (automatic) penalty” of excommunication. As St. John Paul II assured post-abortive women in his encyclical, The Gospel of Life, “The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgive-ness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion.” The Catholic Church also offers compassionate post-abortion healing through Project Rachel (www.projectrachelcincy.com).

Parish Directories Are In!If you had your picture taken last spring for our parish directory, you can pick up your directory after Mass on the weekend or in the Parish Office during the week. If you did not have your picture taken but would still like a directory, you can purchase one for $10.

Lowering our Costs and Reducing Our Power Usage! As some of you may know, we have been working hard to lower our energy consumption and save the parish money. We have a new boiler system in the main church, we have teamed together with other parishes to purchase gas and electric at a much reduced rate, and recently we have changed out a lot of our lighting. We have an anonymous donor who has given us a large donation over the past year to change the bulbs used in our lighting across campus. We have changed out the lights in the Spirit House and on all of the main floor of Favret Hall. Last week, we rented a 55 foot lift in order to replace all of the high ceiling light bulbs in the Nave and in-stall 12 new energy efficient LED fixtures in the parking lot between Favret Hall and the Center. In addition to our donor, we also have a parishioner, Dave Lankford, the regional sales representative at Batteries Plus Bulbs, who assisted us in coordinating Duke Energy rebates. This cut the cost of the bulbs nearly in half. In the church alone, we switched 262 light bulbs. Let’s think of this in terms of power. 221 of the bulbs went from using 120 watts to 17 watts. 41 of the bulbs went from 150 watts to 13 watts. That is a decrease of 28,380 watts! In total, we have decreased our wattage usage by around 50,000 watts. And, these more efficient bulbs will decrease

our maintenance time and costs over the long run as well because they have to be changed less frequently. We are excited to see the impact on our monthly power bills. Thank you to our donor, to the employees and volun-teers for their hard work and to our parishioners who give of their treasure so that we can keep focused on our mission—being Christ to one another. The more we save on power, the more we can do for our community! Make sure to look up this weekend. Our bright new lights will be shining down on you.

Halloween Family Activity Sunday, October 25, 6-7:30 p.m., Church Parking LotCome join us for a BOO-tiful evening of fun for the family! We will serve grilled hot dogs, chips, treats, and drinks for everyone! This will be a fun, safe, and free family activity. Divorced & SeparatedA support group for divorced and separated adults meets Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in the Hos-pitality Room. We meet weekly to share life experiences during

difficult times. You do not need to walk this path alone. Give yourself a gift of time for sharing and support with others who understand. For more information, call Mary Taylor at [email protected].

Is Grief Weighing You Down? After the loss of a loved one, it’s nor-mal to feel the effects of grief. Grief is not something we get over, rather it’s something we work through. The Companions on a Journey grief support group meets on the second

and fourth Thursdays of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room. Here you can express your grief and learn how to go through the grief process so that you can begin this new chapter of your life in a healthy way. Please contact Ron Meyer 376-1277 or Karen Marvich 265-9375 if you have any questions.

Meal Ministry at St. JohnOur “Meal Ministers” are people who make meals for members of our parish and community who are going through a tough time and could use a few home-made meals. In addition to help-

ing families in need, this ministry also makes meals for Father Don to take home every Thursday. We use a simple online sign-up tool that our Meal Ministers utilize to choose when and for whom they cook. The online site also explains any special food needs and gives delivery instructions. If you are interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Joan at 513-777-6433 ext. 124 or [email protected]. More importantly, if you know of a local friend or family member who could use the assistance of our ministry, please send Joan a note or give her a call. A warm meal delivered to the door is a personal and meaning-ful way to reach out to someone in need. Many of us know someone who may be experiencing a hardship. We can take a meal to them! Just give us the name and we will do all of the work.

Project Rachel RetreatProject Rachel is offering a three day retreat for post-abortive women in Cincinnati on November 20-22. The cost is $125 but scholarships are available and cost should not be a barrier to attend. It's time for a sec-ond chance. Choose to accept God's love and forgive yourself. "The women of Project Rachel supported me lovingly, and started me on the path to healing. God forgave me, but I still had to forgive myself. God does not want you to be broken—He wants you to be the Holy Person He created you to be." -a past retreat par-ticipant.
