ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS PARISH THE NATIVITY OF
ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST SUNDAY, JUNE 24, 2012
God bless Fr. Darrio with strength, wisdom and grace to lead the people of St. Cyprian Parish.
Join us as we say thank you and farewell today at the 10:45am Mass and reception.
Dear Parishioners, This weekend we say ‘thank you’ and ‘good-bye’ to Fr. Darrio Boscutti after three years of priestly ministry here at St. John of the Cross. As you know by now, he leaves us to take up the responsibility of being pastor for St. Cyprian’s Parish in River Grove. Fr. Darrio has endeared himself to many by his low-key personality, his enthusiasm for Work Tours and scouting, his willingness to do whatever the school or YC program asked of him and his presence to the hospitalized. He had a significant presence to the teenagers at Kairos retreats and the Crossroads program. Most of you got to know him through his homilies at Sunday Mass. Whether you took him up on his offer to show you his colonoscopy pictures, or hummed along with the Black Hawks theme as he hoisted his version of the Stanley Cup (found in the basement among Fr. Ken’s stage props), or any number of other ‘classic’ Darrio jokes or stories, he gradually revealed himself to be a happy priest, a nice guy and someone easy to be around. His new assignment will bring with it some challenges. He will be the only priest in a parish with a lot of funerals, more weddings than the three of us split between us here and some significant financial challenges. The upside for him, of course, is that he is now less than 10 minutes from his parents home. While I thought he would be with us a lot longer, he feels strongly that the time is right for him to accept the role and responsibility of being pastor. We priests will miss him as an eager co-worker, but the parishioners will miss him simply because he is a very nice guy. Please keep him in your prayers and he will most certainly keep you in his heart. On another note, on Monday of this past week Fr. Filbert received a disturbing phone call from his father. His mother had unexpectedly collapsed and was unconscious at a local clinic. He hurriedly made arrangements and left for Tanzania Tuesday afternoon. He had been planning on spending his vacation in Tanzania for the month of July, so now he will be gone for six weeks. Please keep his mother, father, sister and Fil in your prayers. When we get further updates we will be sure to let you know. This brings up another complication. Two years ago I made a commitment to give a retreat for deacon candidates the last week of June in Boise, Idaho. As it now turns out, Fr. Darrio will be moving to his new parish and will have his last Mass here on Wednesday morning. So from Wednesday until next Monday evening there will be no SJC priest here. We have been assured that both St. Francis Xavier and St. Cletus will be available to help out with funerals, should they occur. Because of the incredible generosity and flexibility of a number of priests, all the Masses have been covered. Moving forward with only two priests may very well cause some decisions to be made about our Mass schedule and other priestly responsibilities. I beg your patience during this transition time. No decisions have been made about anything but there have been some discussions about a number of things, including meetings and other administrative responsibilities. Together we will figure a way forward. Pray for Fr. Filbert and his mother. Pray for Fr. Darrio and his new parish. And pray for our parish. With trust in God and some re-prioritizing, we will be the best community of faith we can be. Peace, Fr. David

O God, who raised up St. John the Baptist to make ready a nation fit for Christ the Lord, give your people the grace of spiritual joys and direct the hearts of all the faithful into the way of salvation and peace. Amen. (Opening Prayer)
Reflections
Living the Gospel Luke 1:57-66, 80 Everything about John pointed to the unexpected. He was conceived in the womb of an elderly woman. He was not named after his father. He spent his life in the desert rather than in the temple following in the footsteps of his priest-father. His “manifestation to Israel” was not about himself, but pointed to Another, the Messiah whom we celebrate and adore as our divine Savior. As God’s chosen ones, everything about us also points to the unexpected: the hand of God is upon us and through us the presence of the Savior is announced for God calls us to be a light to the nations. Yet for God none of this is the unexpected. What is not unexpected is the connection between John and Jesus and saving events. The hand of God was with John in order to point to the Messiah; John’s whole being was directed to his relationship with Christ. God’s saving plan is heralded by John, but accomplished in Christ. More than celebrating the birth of a key player for announcing Jesus’ mission, this solemnity celebrates the unexpected wonders of God’s whole plan of salvation that is happening now. John was beheaded because he boldly announced the dawn of salvation. But John’s announcement could not really be silenced and Christ’s light could not be extinguished. God’s plan would be fulfilled in Christ who brings us salvation. John testifies to Jesus as Messiah and Savior. So must we. We don’t have to look far for what in the world or in our own lives needs the light of Christ. The challenge of this solemnity is to have the courage to announce the presence of Christ, not simply in words but also in deeds. John called for repentance; we ourselves must repent of any sinfulness in our own lives. John witnessed to Christ; we must encounter Christ in our lives and prayer, and then witness to his abiding presence within and among us.
Closing Prayer May we be, like John, witnesses of Jesus’ saving presence among us. May we faithfully listen to the many ways God’s presence is announced to us. Reflection · The unexpected in my life has been . . . I know the unexpected comes from God because . . . · When I understand myself to be part of God’s whole plan of salvation, my life is like . . .

Meditation Fr. Richard Rohr Jesus says, “If you eat this bread you will live forever” (John 6:51). You're indestructible, as it were. You see, if I live by the momentary identity that others give me, that’s what dies when I die, and I’m left with nothing. Your relative identity is what passes away. When Jesus says He's giving Himself to you as the “bread of life” and “If you eat this bread you will live forever,” he's saying, “Find yourself in Me, and this will not pass or change or die. Eat this food as your primary nutrition, and you are indestructible.” You learn to live in what Thomas Merton would call the True Self—who you are, and always have been, in God. Who you are in God is who you forever are. In fact, that's all you are, and it is more than enough. Everything else is passing away. Reputations, titles, and roles do not determine our identity. As Paul puts it, “I live no longer; not I, but God lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). When I hand out the bread I love to say to the assembly, “You become what you eat. Come and eat who you are!”
Adapted from Eucharist as Touchstone (CD, MP3)
Prayer: Eucharisteo. I give thanks. Conversation for the Ride Home Adults: In what area of my life do I most need to continue to grow into my identity as a faithful follower of Christ? Children: What can I say and do to show others that I am a child of God at home, at school, and in my neighborhood? Loving Father, True to the example of John the Baptist, may we always behold the Lamb of God, your Son, and love him with all obedience. Amen.

Special Independence Day Mass Wednesday, July 4 at 9am
Wednesday, July 4 is Independence Day. Please consider beginning this important day with the celebration of the Eucharist at 9am. For Catholic Americans, the Eucharist remains at the heart of all that we are and all that we do. Let us gather and give thanks to God for his many blessings to us and to this great land. Let us also remember to pray for those who do not have the great blessing of living in a land with political and religious freedom. Please note: There is no other mass on this day.
Former parish school teacher, Mrs. O’Neil, passed away in Florida several weeks ago. There will be a Memorial Prayer Service in the Mary Chapel on Tuesday, June 26th at 5 p.m. followed by a gathering in the Parish Center.

Father's Day Each year we celebrate "Father's Day", a day on which we're asked to get in touch with the gratitude we should feel towards our own fathers. For some of us this is easy, we had good fathers; but for many it's difficult: How do you feel gratitude if your father was someone who was mostly absent or abusive? Sadly, our world has too many absent and abusive fathers. Because of this, many of us go through life struggling, however unconsciously, with the capacity to find a healthy balance between freedom and discipline in our lives. Instead we are forever vacillating between being too hard on ourselves or too easy on ourselves. Moreover, if we had an absent or abusive father, we tend to go through life always unconsciously seeking something that has been withheld from us, namely, our father's approval. This leaves us inhibited, often angry, and hungering for a father. Father-hunger, the hunger to be affirmed and blessed by our own fathers or by someone who represents him, is today perhaps the deepest hunger in the world, especially among men. Not enough people have been affirmed and blessed by their own fathers or the father figures in their lives. What is a father? Anthropologists tell us that the archetypal father is meant to have these qualities: He is meant to order, carry, feed, and bless his family. What does this entail? First of all, he is meant to be a principle of order rather than disorder. A good father lives in such a way that his family feels safe and secure when he's around. A bad father, through absence, non-reliability, or by being abusive, makes the family feel unsafe. For example, we see how a father can be a principle of disorder in a situation where he is unfaithful, is an alcoholic, or is nursing some other addiction. His behavior then will be unpredictable and his children will be forever guessing as to whether he will come home or not - and what kind of mood he will be in if he does come home. Slowly the unpredictability will wear on his children to the point where they will feel their father as a principle of disorder, of chaos. Conversely, a good father, even if his family considers him boring and unexciting, will make his family feel safe and secure. Next, a good father carries his family rather than asks them to carry him. A good father is an adult, an elder, not a fellow-sibling or a child (in his behavior) forever demanding that the family carry him. A good father does not make his own problems and concerns, his own tiredness and heartaches, the center of family's attention. Rather he relates beyond his own tiredness and heartaches so as to make the focus of attention the heartaches and headaches of his family.
Beyond this, a good father feeds his family rather than feeds off of them. A good father does not demand, however subtly and unconsciously, that his children bring meaning, satisfaction, and glory into his own life. Rather he is more concerned that his children and his family find meaning, satisfaction, and happiness in their own lives. Good parents feed their children; bad parents feed off of them. Finally, a good father affirms and admires his children rather than demand that they affirm and admire him. A good father expresses to his children his pride in them as opposed to being threatened by their talents and achievements. He doesn't demand that his children express their pride in him. Daniel Berrigan, in a mature autobiography written late in his life, shares how he had to struggle with various issues his entire life, particularly with authority, because of the absence of a blessing from his own father. He shares, for example, how he would be afraid to share with his father the good news that he had just published a book because he feared his father's jealousy. After sharing this, he asks his readers: Is it any wonder that he has been leery and suspicious of every authority figure during his entire adult life? The absence of a father's blessing leaves us with a constriction of the heart. Perhaps an image can be helpful here: When a cow gives birth, her calf comes out of her womb severely constricted, rigid, bound-up in a glue-like afterbirth. But nature has taken this into account and given the mother the proper instinct. She immediately turns round and licks that constriction off her calf. A soon as she's finished, the calf stands up, tests its legs, and begins to walk on its own. As humans, we are born into the same condition. We also come into this life constricted, except that for us this isn't so much a physical thing. It's a much deeper and more complex constriction - and our parents are meant to remove it by ordering, carrying, feeding, and blessing us. No father does this perfectly, but if your father did it even half-adequately, express your gratitude and count our blessings! Rev. Ron Rolheiser, OMI Oblate Father Ron Rolheiser, theologian, teacher, and award-winning author, is President of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, TX. He can be contacted through his website www.ronrolheiser.com.

May you recognize in your life the presence, power and life of your soul.
May you realize that you are never alone, that your soul in its brightness and belonging,
connects you intimately with the rhythm of the universe. May you have respect for your individuality and difference.
May you realize that the shape of your soul is unique, that you have a special destiny here, that behind the facades of your life,
there is something beautiful and eternal happening. May you learn to see yourself with the same delight, pride and
expectation with which God sees you in every moment. And may God bless you on this day and always.
Amen. -from Benedictus by John O’Donohue
