    Notes From The Pastor’s Desk

    WWW.SJBDE.ORGJUNE 18, 2017 FATHERS DAY

The Holy Eucharist is our spiritual Food and Drink. Instituted on Holy Thursday, it is the precious gift given to us by Jesus to experience God’s abiding presence among us. This feast of Corpus Christi gives us an occasion to learn more about the importance and value of the “Real Presence” so that we may appreciate the Sacrament better and receive maximum benefit from receiving Him.

We believe in the “Real Presence” of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist because Jesus identifies Himself as “the Living Bread that came down from Heaven,” after He miraculously fed the 5000. Our Lord commanded His disciples to “eat His Body and drink His blood” in repeated memory of Him. Jesus is truly present because “Nothing is impossible for God.” We explain the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist by “transubstantiation” which means that the substance of the offered bread and wine is changed by Consecration to the substance of the glorified Body and Blood by the Risen Lord.

This feast should affirm our faith in the true presence of Jesus in the Eucharist and allow us to display a profound respect for Christ’s abiding presence among us in the Church. Are we attentive to the prayers of consecration at Mass? Do we receive the Eucharist in a state of grace and respectfully? Do we display Christian witness to the world after we receive His Body and Blood? Being nourished by this heavenly Food and Drink, we cannot help but be truly changed by Him.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, we honor those men who parent us and who selflessly support and guide us, regardless of their own aspirations, hopes and hardships. Knowing that these men protect us, their children, is a great source of security. And to a higher level, are those fathers who inspire us in faith. Saint Joseph, guardian of Jesus, models the attributes of a good father. Amid many worries of material life and soul, he was full of deep peace and true joy through his intimacy with God’s Son entrusted to him. May St. Joseph hear the prayers of our fathers and those who imitate them. And for those men who left this world, may they have the reward of the honorable servants of God. Happy Father’s Day!

The 2017 Diocesan Annual Appeal is progressing very well throughout the diocese. Our parish of Saint John the Beloved has $164,000 presently pledged toward our

$179,000 goal. If you have not made a pledge thus far, please consider making one. Blue envelopes are available at the entrances of the church. Any

contribution is greatly appreciated and will help our parish make our target. Thank You!

A Journey to the Heart of the Faith…

    JUNE 19, 2017 - 8AM - 8PM

100 Years of OUR LADY OF FATIMA

Pope Francis blessed 6 statues of Our Lady under the direction of Fr. Bing and the Alliance of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. These statues will travel to all parts of the world. A plenary indulgence to be granted to those who participate. Our Lady will be at St. John the Beloved on June 19th beginning with 8 AM Mass with all day visitation, adoration at 6 - 7 PM with Benediction and Rosary to follow. All are welcome. Our Lady is calling you.

Today’s Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ reminds us that the essence of our Catholic faith is that in the Eucharist we receive the body and blood of Jesus to nourish us on our journey of life. Did Jesus really mean that the bread and wine of the Eucharist literally become his body and blood? Or did he mean that symbolically? Jesus answers this question today when he says not once, not twice, but four times that the bread and wine of the Eucharist truly become his body and blood. Since the days of Christ this teaching has been a challenge to accept because our senses tell us they are still bread and wine yet our faith assures us they have become his body and blood. What challenges you about the Catholic faith? What are you curious to know more about? This is where RCIA comes in. To explore these challenges we invite you to participate in the upcoming journey to a deeper understanding of the Catholic

faith. For more information contact Deacon Tom Bailey at 302-559-6458, or the parish office. Or you can visit the RCIA page on the parish website, www.sjbde.org.

The 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal was conducted in all diocesan parishes the weekend of April 29 and 30. St. John the Beloved is truly blessed with many generous people, who, despite many economic challenges, have supported this year’s campaign with their pledges and gifts. To date, $164,007 has been received representing 91.62% of our parish’s $179,000 goal. If you have given to this year’s campaign, please know that your participation is gratefully appreciated. If you have not yet done so, please consider supporting this important effort with a pledge or one-time contribution. Annual Appeal pledge cards are available (location). The diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal provides financial support that enables more than thirty ministries throughout our diocese to bring a glimpse of God into the lives of many. The Appeal is an effective way for the diocese to advance the mission of Christ: to feed and house the poor; to minister to the sick and discouraged; to educate our young; and encourage strong, healthy families. If you would like more information about the Annual Catholic Appeal, go to www.cdow.org and click on Giving - Annual Catholic Appeal. May God bless you for your goodness!

Support St. John the Beloved without leaving your home - and it doesn't cost you any additional money. We are now a participant in the Amazon Smile program. You can designate St. John's as the Charity you support, and every time you purchase something on Amazon a percentage of your order will be donated to St. John's from Amazon. Just go to smile.amazon.com and click the link on the charity you are supporting and search for: St. John the Beloved Roman Catholic Church; Location: Wilmington, DE

    VOCATIONS GENERAL INTERCESSIONS

For an increase in vocations to the priesthood in our Diocese, that we never be

deprived of the Eucharist, we pray to the Lord!

    INSPIRE

    FATHERS DAY

We celebrate the true presence of the Body and Blood of Christ this week. How often do we overlook or take for granted this glorious truth? Recognizing and embracing this truth, one cannot help but be drawn to participate in this glorious mystery. Each time you receive Holy Eucharist you are professing the true presence of Christ. As you partake in this mystery one should strive to

embrace this in both their mind and heart. Another means in which one can contemplate this truth is through Adoration. When was the last time you spent time in the presence of Christ? Opening yourself up to this devotion is a wonderful way to affirm your faith, contemplate the mystery of Christ’s presence, and witness to the fact that God truly dwells amongst us.

The Church lives through the nourishment of the Eucharist; “the celebration of the Eucharist . . . absolutely requires the presence of an ordained priest as its president” (Saint Pope John Paul II, Ecclesia de Eucharistia, #29). Are you one of those men God is calling to serve the Church as a priest? If you think that might be the case, please call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113 or [email protected]). Be sure to visit our website: www.cdow.org/vocations!
