Greetings Brother Knights,Easter is always a time for me to reflect.

There is a sense of great loss and sadness and solemnity, then a period of mourning and reflection that leads into joy with the risen Christ. The joy leads into the new beginning of the year for me, spring is on the way, the weather is getting warmer and things are turning green, giving new life. It is a wonderful time of the year. Thank you! Marshall Heaton

Grand Knight

Hello Brother Knights and FamiliesWelcome to Spring, Baseball and Fry Hut

Season. Our Council is coming up with some great ideas for fraternity and social events amongst our members and wives. On Friday, May 6th, we are having a Free Trivia Night for all couples in our council. All we ask you is to bring something small for a pot luck for the social time. Great Prizes will be won, valued in the $100’s! (more info in the bulletin). We have some amazing couples and families we don’t see any more or too often. Come out and have some fun with us!(If you have a great family event in mind, let me know)

May 28th will be a Fun Golf Day with no Experience Nec-essary, more to follow.

I would like to welcome a new transfer into our council, Ray Rice. Ray and his wife Doris helped us with our Wild Game dinner before even transferring into our council.

Thanks to Ken Bachmeier, Randy Allsop, Ray and Doris in helping get our hall ready for our time of fellowship before March’s meeting. I did something special that month by inviting all those who were involved with the wild game, wives, family and friends to attend as we had snacks and pizza and refreshments at the bar. If it’s been a while that you’ve been to a meeting, come around 5:00 dress casual; bring about $2 donation for the meal at 5:30, time of fel-lowship until the meeting starts at 7. Bring your Member-ship Card and $1 for the Good of the Order. If the guys stay focused in reading their reports, the meeting usually lasts an hour and ¼.

Nominations are in April with elections to follow at the May meeting. Please consider becoming an executive and help guide our council over the next fiscal year.

By the time you read this, the 2016 Euchre Challenge within our district will be over. Come to the meeting to find out who’s council takes home the trophy.

Dan Tymec is doing a great job in organizing the State Lottery ticket sales. We had weekends of sales at Zehrs and Freshco with another weekend coming up at Zehrs on the 22-24th of April The tickets are still $5each.

It was motioned and passed that our council will pur-chase flowers in the passing of a Brother Knights Wife or Widow. That goes along with executives agreeing to acti-vate the phone tree in such case.

The Notice of Motion on the Final Amendment to our New K of C 8233 Excellence Award was passed with much debate. Thank you to the Committee who worked so hard in completing this. Chaplain’s Good News

Dear Brother Knights and families:

Christ has died!Christ is risen!

Christ will come again!

Easter Blessings!

Father Rick Janisse

Brothers,I pray that you were especially blessed

with the presence of God over this Easter season! The Squires have had an especially busy month (specifically the first weekend) and are excited as we approach April. The boys ran another Quarter Auction Concession in Harrow on the Friday and kept on top of the sold-out-crowd of mostly ladies. The group present had a great time and made some much-needed cash for the circle. Special thanks to GK Ted and Tom as well as counselor in training Brad for the hard work and sup-port! On the Saturday, the boys had some good times at the Wild Game Dinner and especially loved the op-portunity to taste the wild meat. For some boys, they would never get this opportunity to eat wild game. All responses were very positive! Again, thanks to Tom for being present. The boys did a great job and deserve our praise. One Squire made a suggestion for next year related to recycling. He was not thrilled with how many recyclable items were being thrown away and hopes next year we can set up some recycling bins as we col-lect items from the tables. Maybe a little more work, but definitely worth a try! We had a Squire’s Mass that Sunday and even though it was our third event in 3 days, we had a pretty solid representation. Thanks to every-one for coming out! And our 4th event in 4 days was on the Monday. We held our March Squire’s business meeting! 4 events in 4 days. Wow! We didn’t stop there… the boys held an investiture followed by an executive meeting and gym night this past Monday before Easter. We invested 5 excited NEW Squires who put our circle at about 17 active members and 38 over-all. The boys were promised a pizza party at the end of the year if they doubled their active-mem-bership size and are well on the way to getting this! Please be sure to give congratulations to the boys when you see them. We have about 5-10 more boys who have expressed interest but were unable to attend the last investiture… timing is everything! Fraternally, Exciting times to be a Constable John Atkinson Squire! If you know of a boy who would enjoy coming out and developing his leadership skills, please let CS Caleb or DCS Dominik know or contact me, Greg Coulter, CC

Squire Report

Happy Easter!

I hope everyone is looking at this time of year as a time to renew and re-invent themselves, much like Spring renews the land around us.

My report will be short today. Please take an opportunity to think about the new New Member Mentorship Program our council is trying to start up. It will be a great way to keep our new members knowledgeable on things that are going on around us. Being a new member is a daunting task. It’s hard to get lost in all the meetings and emails and events etc. etc. Brothers, if you are asked to be a mentor please give it some serious thought. You may just be molding an active member.

Please take this opportunity to pray for all members of our council and their families this month. All those who are sick and in distress. All those who are tired and lonely. As always if you know of any Brother or family member needing our sup-port please let us know.

Thanks very much.

Dear Brother Knights,

Happy Easter! With praise and gratitude to Almighty God, the Diocese of London, and St. Pe-ter’s Seminary, announces the ordination of sem-inarian, Deacon David Johnston to the priest-hood. Deacon David is from Sacred Heart Parish, Port Lambton, Ontario. The Sacrament of Holy Orders will be celebrated by His Excellency Ronald Peter Fabbro, Bishop of London, on Saturday, April 23rd, 2016 at 11:00am at St. Peter’s Cathedral Basilica, 196 Dufferin Ave., London, On-tario. All are welcome to attend. We assure Deacon David of our support and prayers, as he prepares for ordination.

Thanks to the generosity and service of brother Knights from St. Michael’s Council 12820 in London, on Saturday morning, April 23rd from 8:30am - 10 am we are inviting parish priests along with any interested young men, ages 14 and up, to join us for a pre-ordination breakfast and vocation talk. During the Ordination Day Breakfast, these young men and their parish priests gather for breakfast with Bishop Fabbro and the seminarians. There will be a brief presentation by the Vocations Director, and the Bishop will explain the Rite of Ordination that he will cel-ebrate, helping those invited understand what an ordina-tion is. An ordination is a truly beautiful liturgy, one of the richest and most profound experiences we might witness. This is a great opportunity to invite senior altar servers, youth group leaders, and other young men in the parish to experience the priesthood in a very joyful atmosphere, and plant some seeds for future priestly vocations. To help facilitate transportation, the breakfast is open to parish priests, youth ministers and parents’ of discerners. Following the breakfast these young men then get prime seating at the Cathedral to be up-close to the action at the Ordination Mass.

We will gather for the breakfast at St. Michael’s Parish, 511 Cheapside St., Lon-don at 8:30am. The breakfast is provid-ed by the Knights of Columbus. Please contact me at

v o c a t i o n s @ d o l . c a by Monday, April 18th to reserve the amount of spaces that you require.

With my prayers,

The Knights of Columbus of Ontario State, Strongly Opposes the Parliamentary Committee’s Assisted Death/Euthanasia Recommendations

Dear Brother Knights,

We must join the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) in opposition to the recommendations of the Report of the Special Joint Committee on Physician-Assisted Dying, titled “Medical Assistance in Dying: A Patient-Centred Approach.” Let us instead use the more accurate terms “assisted suicide” and “euthanasia” since there is nothing medicinal whatsoever in the process of killing a patient or intervening so that a patient may commit suicide more easily.

The Joint Committee recommends the practically unfettered and immediate implementation of death on demand for Canadians. We must not be fooled into believing that there could ever be such a thing as “safeguards” as, based on the experience of other jurisdictions, “safeguards”, even as minimally expressed by the Joint Committee, are illusory.

We ought to fear for the elderly, the disabled, and the those with mental health afflictions, that they will be the subject of increased pressure to take their own lives, rather than gain access to treatment, or palliative care. In every other jurisdiction, the scope of assisted suicide and euthanasia widens, and instances of egregious circumstances of premature death prevail.

Of particular concern is recommendation #11:

That the Government of Canada work with the provinces and territories to ensure that all publicly funded health care institutions provide medical assistance in dying.

Catholic health institutions cannot and will not participate in the intrinsically evil act of assisted suicide/euthanasia. Is such a proposal intended to bring about the demise of the Catholic health system? We as Knights, the strong right arm of the Church, must never allow this.

Canada is entering fully into the culture of death.

We Knights must be strong in rejecting this report and we must cry out to all Canadians, and indeed all Catholics to wake up and join us in this fight, spiritually through prayer, and politically by using our collective voice. Let us announce that we will not accept this.

Fraternally,

Christian Elia, Pro-Life Director, Ontario State [email protected] (416) 500-0755

Pastoral Statement for the Catholics of Canada on the report issued by the Special Joint Committee of the Government of Canada,

entitled Medical Assistance in Dying: A Patient-Centred Approach Dear brothers and sisters, The Special Joint Committee of the Government of Canada on “Physician-Assisted Dying” this past February 25 released its report, Medical Assistance in Dying: A Patient-Centred Approach. The report, in part, recommends: - That assisted suicide be available to those with psychiatric conditions (Recommendation 3) - That psychological suffering be among the criteria making an individual eligible for

assisted suicide (Recommendation 4) - That within approximately three years assisted suicide be available for adolescents and

possibly also children who can be considered “mature minors” (Recommendation 6) - That all health-care practitioners be obliged at the minimum to provide an “effective

referral” for clients seeking assisted suicide (Recommendation 10) - That all publicly funded health-care institutions in Canada provide assisted suicide

(Recommendation 11)

In addition, the report fails to show how palliative care and home care can provide true options for those tempted by suicide, nor does it call for a national plan to prevent suicides. Suicide rates are five to seven times higher for First Nations youth in Canada than for non-Aboriginal youth, while suicide rates among Inuit youth are among the highest in the world, at 11 times the national Canadian average. The teaching of the Catholic Church and the stance of the Catholic Bishops of Canada are clear. Suicide is not part of health care. Killing the mentally and physically ill, whether young or aged, is contrary to caring for and loving one’s brother and sister. The dignity of the human person and the flourishing of the human community demand: 1) protection and respect for each human life from conception to natural death, and 2) freedom of conscience and religion for each person as well as each institution. Social wellbeing, personal security and the common good – together with religious faith – involve safeguarding, not endangering, the lives of those suffer. The above recommendations and the thrust of the report completely fail to be “patient-centred” or to assist and support the dying and the vulnerable. To borrow from the words of Pope Francis, the report’s recommendations are the approach of a “throw-away” society. They do not reveal the face of God’s mercy.
