St. Catherine Labouré (Zoe) was born 1806 in
Fain-Les-Moutiers France, 9th of 11 children. She
entered the Sisters of Charity in 1830 and took the name
Catherine. In November 1830 Mary appeared to her and
asked for a medal to be made (Miraculous Medal). Mary
had rays coming from gems on her
fingers. Those without rays symbolized graces we forget to
ask for. For the next 46 years Catherine led a hidden life,
and cared for old men. She died on 12/31, 1876. She was
canonized in 1947. Her body is incorrupt to this day.

T oday as a Church, we conclude our liturgical year and celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. The
Gospel we proclaim shows the great mystery of our
faith: In the moment of his crucifixion, Jesus is
shown to be King and Savior of all.
Luke's Gospel has been loaded with surprises: the
poor are rich, sinners find salvation, the Kingdom of
God is found in our midst. Here we see the greatest
surprise of all. We are confronted with the crucified
Jesus, whom faith tells us is King and Savior of all.
The irony is that the inscription placed on the cross,
perhaps in mockery, contains the profoundest of
truth. As the leaders jeer, the thief crucified by his
side recognizes Jesus as Messiah and King, and
finds salvation.
Jesus is King, but not the kind of king we might
have imagined or expected. His kingship was hidden
from many of his contemporaries, but those who had
the eyes of faith were able to see. As modern disci-
ples of Jesus, we, too, struggle at times to recognize
Jesus as King. Today's Gospel invites us to make
our own judgment. With eyes of faith, we, too, rec-
ognize that Jesus, the crucified One, is indeed King
A dvent is a time of preparation for the coming of Christ at Christmas. Traditionally, it has been celebrated with prayer
and fasting, which is why it is known as the "little Lent." Ad-
vent is also the start of the liturgical year in the Roman Catho-
lic Church. When does Advent start?
How Is the Date When Advent Starts Determined? As the Catholic Encyclopedia notes, "Advent is a period be-
ginning with the Sunday nearest to the feast of St. Andrew the
Apostle (30 November) and embracing four Sundays." That
means that the First Sunday of Advent can fall as early as No-
vember 27 or as late as December 3.

THANKSGIVING DAY, A DEEPLY
CATHOLIC HOLIDAY
For most Americans, Thanksgiving Day is a special day, where
we celebrate family unity. In fact, families get together on
Thanksgiving more often than on any other holiday, including
Christmas, and according to retailers’ statistics, this is the day
when the most food is consumed in the country.
But besides the traditional family get-together and the big
meal, there is also the religious meaning of this holiday, that is
present since its origins. According to tradition, the pilgrims
celebrated the first meal of thanksgiving in 1621, together with
a group of natives to give thanks to God for the abundance of
the harvests in the new world.
With time, this celebration became a national event, finally
sanctioned by President George Washington himself. Today,
we Catholics, celebrate Thanksgiving not only as a national
holiday, but also as an authentically Catholic holiday.
In fact the Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that
“Believing in God, the only One, and loving him with all our
being has enormous consequences for our whole life,” (CCC
222); and then it adds that this involves, “living in thanksgiv-
ing: if God is the only One, everything we are and have comes
from him: ‘What have you that you did not receive?’ ‘What
shall I render to the Lord for all his bounty to me?’”(CCC 224).
Catholics should not only celebrate Thanksgiving with a deep
sense of prayer, gratitude and joy, but the celebration this day
should lead us to remember that our lives as Catholics are a
constant act of thanksgiving, through our daily activities, all of
which should give glory to God, especially through the celebra-
tion of the Eucharist, which, as the Catechism says, “The
Eucharist is a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Father, a blessing
by which the church expresses her gratitude to God for all his
benefits, for all that he has accomplished through creation, re-
demption and sanctification. Eucharist means first of all
‘thanksgiving.’” (CCC 1360)
Next weekend we begin the special season of Advent. Through
it, we prepare to receive the supreme gift from God: his own
Son, who became one of us to reconcile humanity.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas:
Muchos relatos de los evangelios nos muestran que la
vida de Jesús se caracterizó por ser un continuo en-
cuentro con las personas, fue especialmente cercano a
los enfermos, a los que consoló y curó de sus enfer-
medades y dolencias. También los encarcelados
fueron objeto de su cercanía; a los privados de liber-
tad, Jesús les brindó la nueva y verdadera libertad
que nace del encuentro personal con él y que da un
sentido nuevo a la vida.
Por lo tanto, siguiendo el ejemplo Jesús, no podía
faltar entre las obras de misericordia el visitar a los
enfermos y a los encarcelados. Como cristianos esta-
mos llamados a convertirnos en instrumentos de la
misericordia de Dios, siendo cercanos y sin juzgar a
nadie, para que nadie se sienta abandonado a su su-
erte ni tampoco acusado, sino que todos, sin exclu-
sión, se sientan amados por Dios mediante gestos que
expresen solidaridad y respeto. Estos gestos, cuando
son hechos en nombre de Dios, se convierten en au-
ténticos signos elocuentes y eficaces de su miseri-
cordia.
Saludo cordialmente a los peregrinos de lengua
española, en particular a los grupos provenientes de
España y Latinoamérica. Los animo a que sean vali-
entes y abran el corazón a Dios y a los hermanos, de
modo que sean instrumentos de la misericordia y ter-
nura de Dios, que restituye la alegría y la dignidad a
quienes la han perdido. Muchas gracias.

ADVIENTO
Durante la primera semana de adviento las lecturas bíbli-
cas y la predicación son una invitación con las palabras
del Evangelio: "Velen y estén preparados, que no saben
cuándo llegará el momento". Es importante que, como
familia nos hagamos un propósito que nos permita avan-
zar en el camino hacia la Navidad; ¿qué te parece si nos
proponemos revisar nuestras relaciones familiares? Como
resultado deberemos buscar el perdón de quienes hemos
ofendido y darlo a quienes nos hayan ofendido para
comenzar el Adviento viviendo en un ambiente de
armonía y amor familiar. Desde luego, esto deberá ser
extensivo también a los demás grupos de personas con los
que nos relacionamos diariamente, como la escuela, el
trabajo, los vecinos, etc. Esta semana, en familia al igual
que en cada comunidad parroquial, encenderemos la
primer vela de la Corona de Adviento color morada, como
signo de vigilancia y deseos de conversion.

una procesión solemne a las 2:15 am. desde la
Iglesia al Salón Claridge, tendremos una obra tea-
tral sobre la vida de St. Catheriné Labouré, por

REFLEXIONES SOBRE LAS LECTURAS
DEL PROXIMO DOMINGO
Primera Lectura: Adviento es un tiempo que prepara para el
futuro. Un futuro de gracia salvífica que viene con Jesucristo. El
profeta Isaías visualiza este futuro de paz y gracia mediante
varios símbolos. El símbolo de la mansión de Dios sobre una
montaña (que es la Iglesia), invitando al pueblo a acudir, ofre-
ciéndoles el camino de Cristo. Símbolos de la paz y fraternidad
que Cristo traerá: cambiando las armas por herramientas de paz,
los conflictos en amistad.
Segunda Lectura: La lectura de San Pablo es una advertencia
para hacernos conscientes de la gracia que viene. Usa el bien
conocido símbolo bíblico de las tinieblas y la luz. El nacimiento
de Jesús es el inicio de un permanente día de salvación; la noche
del pecado pronto quedará atrás. Por lo tanto, guiemos nuestras
vidas de acuerdo con esta luz que ya amanece entre nosotros, y
desprendámonos de las obras de una noche y unas tinieblas que
deberían ya pertenecer a nuestro pasado.
Tercera Lectura: El tema del Evangelio de hoy es la vigilancia
cristiana. Jesús usa el relato del diluvio en los tiempos de Noé,
que sorprendió a la gente desprevenida y absorbida en una vida
de pecado, para subrayar la necesidad de vigilar diariamente so-
bre nuestro mode de vivir, y de estar preparados para nuestro
encuentro con Cristo. Como sucede con varios de los Evangelios
de Adviento, este texto tiene un doble significado. Por una parte,
es una llamada a prepararnos para el encuentro con Jesús que
viene en Navidad. Esta venida está llena de gracia y de miseri-
cordia, pero al estar éstas encarnadas en la humanidad de Dios,
necesitamos fe, amor y un corazón pobre a fin de compartir estos
dones de Dios. Por otra parte, es una llamada a prepararnos para
encontrar a Jesús cuando venga a nosotros en el momento de
nuestra muerte. Esta venida es en justicia y misericordia, y su
momento preciso no lo conocemos. (“No pueden conocer el día
en que su Señor venga... Llegará en el momento en que menos lo
esperan”.) Sin embargo, estos dos modos de encontrar a Jesús
están relacionados. Aquel que está bien preparado para la gracia
de Navidad, también estará bien preparado para la gracia de la
muerte. Y no nos engañemos sobre la calidad de nuestra prepar-
ción. Esta significa un cambio de corazón; no tiene que ver con
apariencias externas ni con la “hoimagen”. La diferencia se da en
la orientación profunda de nuestras vidas. Por eso, “dos
mbres estarán en el campo...dos mujeres estarán
moliendo...pero uno será tomado y el otro será aban-
donado”
"Por su perseverancia protegerá tu vida." Debemos
perseverar en el amor de Dios según lo manifestado
por nuestros matrimonios. Asistir a un fin de se-
