LENT... In just three days we will be in the Lenten season. We begin each Lent with Ash Wednesday as a re-minder that we are dust and to dust we shall return. It is good for everyone to consider this truth because we will all have to face death sooner or later. So many are attached to the things that will deteriorate by decay or rust. Money, power, entertainment, and simply doing nothing occupy the time of people in the world…… God wants all of us to be with Him in this life because He loves us. It is the best thing for us. He wants us to abandon sin which makes us unhappy slaves. We cannot serve two masters. We must love God with our whole heart, mind, strength, and soul. To do so in-volves saying “no” to all sinful temptations and even to some legitimate desires. This is not easy be-cause there is a barrage of temptations from the world all around us. Moreover, the devil comes into the scene and tempts us, as well as our past sins. That is why it is important to go to sacramen-tal Confession frequently and to make reparation for forgiven past sins by prayers and charitable deeds…… The reason why it is good sometimes to deny ourselves good things is that it helps us to focus more upon God. Everyone sees the wisdom in this to some extent. People see diet and exer-cise as valuable for a healthy life here. Mortification or self-denial is good for a healthy spiritual life here and in the next world, Heaven. St. Francis de Sales said that self-denial “...strengthens our spirit as it mortifies our flesh and sensuality. It raises our souls to God. It gets rid of concupiscence by giving us the strength to overcome and mortify our passions, and it disposes our heart that it may seek for nothing except to please God in everything.” (from his Sermon on Fasting)…… During Lent, we have the opportunity to draw up a plan of mortification for each day. Wymowny gest posypania głowy popiołem w Środę Popielcową może byd niczym naciśnięcie hamulca w samochodzie. Wszystko przemija... "Pamiętaj człowieku, że prochem jesteś i w proch się obrócisz"…. Popielcowa refleksja może jednak zostad zmarnowana, jeśli nie pójdą za nią konkretne postanowienia i działania. Posypanie głowy popiołem to tylko pierwszy krok syna marnotrawnego na długiej i uciążliwej drodze do domu Ojca. To wstąpienie na drogę pokuty. A pokuta to nie tylko zewnetrzne czyny, ale przede wszystkim przemiana serca…. A zatem wejście na drogę pokuty to wejście na drogę jednoczesnego umierania i rodzenia do nowego życia… Ks. Reflections from Fr. Emil… SYMBOLS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

FIRE. While water signifies birth and the fruitfulness of life given in the Holy Spirit fire symbolizes the

transforming energy of the Holy Spirit's actions. The prayer of the prophet Elijah, who arose like fire and

whose word burned like a torch, brought down fire from heaven on the sacrifice on Mount Carmel. This event

was a figure of the fire of the Holy Spirit, who transforms what he touches. John the Baptist, who goes before

the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, proclaims Christ as the one who will baptize you with the Holy

Spirit and with fire. Jesus will say of the Holy Spirit; "I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it

were already kindled". Lk 12, 49 In the form of tongues as of fire, the Holy Spirit rests on the disciples on the

morning of Pentecost and fills them with himself. The spiritual tradition has retained this symbolism of fire as

one of the most expressive images of the Holy Spirit's actions.

SYMBOLE DUCHA ŚWIĘTEGO

Ogień. Podczas gdy woda oznacza narodzenie i płodność życia udzielanego w Duchu Świętym, ogień

symbolizuje przekształcającą energię dzieł Ducha Świętego. Prorok Eliasz, który powstał jak ogień, a słowo

jego płonęło jak pochodnia., swoją modlitwą sprowadza ogień z nieba na ofiarę na górze Karmel; jest on

figurą ognia Ducha Świętego, który przekształca wszystko, czego dotknie. Jan Chrzciciel, który pójdzie przed

Panem w duchu i mocy Eliasza, zapowiada Chrystusa jako Tego, który chrzci... będzie Duchem Świętym i

ogniem, tym Duchem, o którym Jezus powie:"Przyszedłem rzucić ogień na ziemię, i jakże bardzo pragnę,

żeby on już zapłonął". Lk 12. 49. W postaci języków jakby ogień, Duch Święty spoczywa na uczniach w

poranek Pięćdziesiątnicy i napełnia ich sobą. Tradycja duchowa zachowa tę symbolikę ognia jako jedną z

najlepiej wyrażających działanie Ducha Świętego.

LOS SIMBOLOS DEL ESPIRITU SANTO

El fuego. Mientras que el agua significaba el nacimiento y la fecundidad de la Vida en el Espiritu Santo, el

fuego simboliza la energia transformadora de los actos del Espiritu Santo. El profeta Elias que surgio como el

fuego y cuya palabra abrasaba como antorcha., con su oracion, atrajo el fuego del cielo sobre el sacrificio del

monte Carmelo, figura del fuego del fuego del Espiritu Santo que transforma lo que toca. Juan Bautista, que

precede al Seńor con el espiritu y el poder de Elias, anuncia a Cristo como el que bautizara en el Espiritu San-

to y el fuego. Espiritu del cual Jesus dira; "He venido a traer fuego sobre la tierra y cuanto desearia que ya es-

tuviese encendidol" Lc 12, 49. En forma de lenguas como el fuego se pose el Espiritu Santo sobre los discipu-

los la mańana de Pentecostes y los lleno de el. La tradicion espiritual conservara este simbolismo del fuego

como uno de los mas expresivos de la accion del Espiritu Santo.

SCHOOL NEWS…. As February ends and spring nears, the 8th graders are busy! A big

“CONGRATS” to our 8th graders for being accepted into their respective high schools!! Their hard work and determination has paid off. This is cause for celebration, but the year is not over yet. The 8th graders began reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel two weeks ago; Night is about a young Jewish boy dur-ing World War II. Elie struggles through Auschwitz and emerges with a new identity and focus in life. Students will learn how to analyze important events and how they shape a person’s life. By the end of the book, these students will be able to put themselves into Elie’s shoes and have a greater appreciation for his struggles. Within Social Studies, students are beginning their studies on World War I. They will be ana-lyzing the beginnings of War and how “The War to end all wars” began. In the months to come, these 8th graders will fine-tune their academic skills to be prepared for their transi-tion to high school.

Miesiąc luty już się zakooczył i zbliża się Wiosna. Klasy ósme są bardzo zajęte. To jest wielkie zadanie dla klas ósmych aby byd przyjętym do odpowiednich Wyższych Szkół. Ciężka ich praca i determinacja zostają odpłacone. To wszystko stanie się w czasie celebracji koocowej, ale teraz Szkoła jeszcze trwa. Od

dwóch tygodni klasy ósme zaczęły czytad książkę pt."Noc" napisaną przez Elie Wiesel. "Noc" jest to książka o żydowskim chłopcu żyjącym w czasie II Wojny Światowej. Elie przeszła przez doświadczenie obozu koncentracyjnego Auschwitz. Uczniowie uczą się jak analizowad ważne wydarzenia w życiu innych. Na koocu tej książki uczniowie wczują się w rolę Elies i docenią innych ludzi. Studjując socjologię, uczniowie dowiadują się o Wojnach Światowych. Analizują oni początek i przyczyny Wojny oraz ich konsekwencje i zakooczenie. W miesiącach, które nadchodzą, uczniowie przygotowują się do przyjęcia do Wyższych Szkół.

Con el fin de Febrero acabandose y la primavera acercandose, el 8º grado está ocupado! Un gran "Felicidades" a nues-tros estudiantes de 8º grado por ser aceptados en sus escuelas secundarias respectivas! Su arduo trabajo y determina-ción ha dado sus frutos. Esto es motivo de celebración, pero el año no ha terminado todavía. El 8º grado comenzó a leer el libro Noche de Elie Wiesel hace dos semanas; Noche es sobre un joven Judío durante la Segunda Guerra Mun-dial. Elie lucha a través de Auschwitz y surge con una nueva identidad y se centran en su vida. Los estudiantes apren-derán cómo analizar los acontecimientos importantes y cómo se forma la vida de una persona. Al final del libro, estos estudiantes serán capaces de ponerse en los zapatos de Elie y tendran una mayor apreciación de sus luchas. En Cien-cias Sociales, los estudiantes comienzaron sus estudios en la Primera Guerra Mundial. Analizaran los inicios de la gue-rra y cómo "La guerra para terminar todas las guerras," comenzó. En los próximos meses, los estudiantes de 8º grado afinaran sus habilidades académicas que se preparan para la transición a la escuela secundaria.
