Principal’s Message The purpose of this handbook is to acquaint students, parents, and community members with the general

policies, guidelines, and expectations that we incorporate into our daily school life. It is our belief that

effective two waycommunication is necessary to ensure that our students are getting the best educational

experience possible. It is also important that you are informed about your student’s progress and are

confident that your child is receiving the necessary skills/tools to become a productive member of our

society.

The new academic year will bring with it many new challenges as we work through another year of

renovations but we are really looking forward to the finished product in the Fall of 2017. We thank you in

advance for your support as we work through another year of construction.

Parental Involvement

Students benefit greatly when parents take an active role in their education. By showing interest in your

child's education, you pass on an important message. You are saying that school is valuable, interesting

and worth talking about at home. Students will usually enjoy learning and school life more; improve their

skills and attitudes and do better in school; develop confidence in themselves, and be better prepared for

the future when this parental involvement is present. The following are some of the things you can do to

get involved in your child's education:

1) Get to know your child's teachers, the school staff, subject matter and school policies. Read the school

handbook with your child. Attend school activities (Open Houses, Hot Dog Sales, Concerts, Sports

Events, S.C.C. meetings, etc.). We are always looking for volunteers in the school.

2) Talk about school each day. Ask about subjects, friends, sports and activities, homework and projects.

Encourage your child to share school experiences. Be positive; praise your child's efforts.

3) Make your home a learning place. Provide a time and place for homework and studying. Set clear rules

about homework and study times. Be a guide: offer assistance and encouragement, but do not do their

work for them.

*These are just a few general ideas on parental involvement in education. If you are interested in more

information or information on specific topics related to helping your child in school, feel free to call the

school and talk to your child's teacher or the principal.

Parent – School Communication Process

We believe that the parent – school communication process is extremely valuable. We would therefore

ask that you respect the following communication guidelines if you have a question, concern, or

suggestion.

1. Your Child - If you have a concern regarding your child, please direct it to the classroom teacher

through email or telephone. Most concerns can be dealt with at this level. If not, then contact the school

Principal. If you are still not satisfied, you may contact the Superintendent.

2. The School - If you have a concern of a general nature about the school, please contact the Principal. If

you require further discussion, you may contact the Superintendent.

3. School or Board Policies and Programs - Please use the following protocol: Principal, Superintendent,

Director of Education.

Visitors to School

School buildings and school grounds are not public property, but are the exclusive property of the

Horizon School Division. However, at St. Brieux School, the staff and students welcome all stakeholders

to visit our facility. Parents, alumni and all other visitors to the school are asked to report to the Main

Office upon entering the school and are encouraged to arrange to visit at times that are the least disruptive

to the learning of the students. Visitors will be expected to observe and comply with the St. Brieux School

Code of Conduct at all times.

School attendance

All of the educational research identifies the importance of attending school on a regular basis. If you

know that your child(ren) won't be in school, please phone or email the school to let us know about the

absence. These absences are then recorded as "excused". In K-6, we take attendance once in the morning

and again once in the afternoon where in grades 7-12, attendance is taken hourly. Attendance is also

monitored very closely in grades 7-12 and failure to communicate with the school results in an

"unexcused absence" being reported, which results in further follow up from the school as well as

potential removal from grade 10-12 courses if their attendance interferes with their ability to demonstrate

their learning of the curriculum outcomes.

If your child will be absent from school, please contact the main office at 306-275-2133 or email

[email protected] (Please note the change in email address).

School Fees - The Principal and School Community Council will establish school fees within the limitations of the

Education Act

- The school division is committed to exploring all reasonable means of containing fees and charges to

parents, to maintain its compliance with the Education Act.

- No student will be denied access to a course of instruction solely for reason of financial inability to pay

the fees levied for such a course nor will they be denied the ability to play on a school team. Every effort

will be made to safeguard the dignity of each family and to ensure the confidentiality of each situation.

- School Fees payable by September 30th: $25 Please make cheques payable to St. Brieux School. If

you require a payment plan, please contact the office as soon as possible.

NEW Procedures & Reminders during Construction and Renovation Parents and guardians dropping off students, please do not use 3rd Ave in front of the fences. The

designated place to drop off students is on 1st Ave to the south of the school. Student parking will also be

anywhere south of 1st Ave. Updates will be sent via email, posted on the school website, and on our

Facebook page. Please remind your child(ren) to stay away from all construction equipment and out of

the fenced area for their own safety and the safety of others.

Criminal Record Check & Vulnerable Sector Check

In order to ensure the safety of our students and staff, all volunteers in contact with our students

(chaperones, drivers, etc.) must go to the RCMP detachment and complete a Criminal Record and

Vulnerable Sector Check. (As a volunteer, there isn’t any cost for this. Please bring a copy of the letter

that was sent home with youngest student in your family or email it to us. If you require another copy, we

have extras at the office.) These checks must be done at your "home detachment" which would be the

Melfort RCMP detachment. This Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check, is in effect for three (3)

years. Once you have your Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check, it is your responsibility to

ensure that the Principal gets a copy, as they have to record it on a special form. We are unable to have

any exceptions to this expectation.

St. Brieux School has been designated as a scent-free building. If an individual comes into the building

with a strong scent, they may be asked to change clothing, go home and shower and return with fresh

clothing or leave the building as there are students within the school that are very sensitive to perfume

scents, etc.

Students require 24 credits to obtain a Saskatchewan graduation diploma. It is the philosophy of St.

Brieux School to encourage students to take as many subjects as possible to leave all possibilities open to

them at the end of their secondary education. Students in grades 10-12 must be registered in at least eight

credits per school year.

Dropping Classes - If a student is taking less than eight credits, they must pick up another credit through Distance

Education.

- Classes need to be dropped within the first two weeks of class.

- The student must consult with Mr. Casavant or Mr. Loehr (Career Guidance Counsellor) about Grade 12

Graduation requirements before a drop will be considered.

- Parents/Guardians will also be required to sign a drop form prior to the drop being considered “official”.

- The student must have all pre-requisites to graduate before he/she can drop a class.

SPARES Students who are on spares are to be in the classroom that they have left or out of the building.

- failure to be in one of the two assigned areas could see this privilege removed and the student assigned

to a classroom on a full time basis.

Note: If you are leaving the building you must sign out at the front office

Graduation The school plans a Graduation Ceremony each year to honour the Grade 12 students who have met the

requirements for graduation. The school organizes the ceremonies with input from the graduating class

and their parents. To be eligible to participate in Graduation, students must be in a position to complete 24

credits, including all compulsory secondary classes as outlined by the Ministry of Education, by the end

of the school year and be in good standing with the school. Students who have 40% or less in any of the

required 24 credits as of June 1st each year will not be eligible to participate in the graduation

ceremonies.

Distance Education Courses Available Courses are available through the Horizon School Division. Please see Mrs. Gray for more information

or registration, or visit the website at http://distanceed.horizonsd.ca/Courses Attendance and Late Policy The Education Act specifies that the school must be notified of reasons for student absences from school.

Absences are classified as excused (parent phones and advises the school of the reason for the absence) or

unexcused (no contact from the parent). The secretary will call the parents/guardians if the student does

not show up for the first class of the day

K- 6 Attendance

Attendance is taken once in the morning at 9 am and again at 12:55pm

Grade 7-12 Attendance Attendance is taken for every class. The classroom teacher enters the attendance at the beginning of each

class. If a student arrives late, they are marked late on the attendance.

5 unexcused absences or lates per class – teacher contacts home

7+ unexcused absences or lates per class – Privileges removed

10 unexcused absences in 10/20/30 level courses may result in discontinuation of the course.

Leaving The School Grounds Students in Kindergarten through Grade 9 may leave the grounds if:

- The student is a town student going home at noon hour

- The student is escorted by their parent(s)/guardian(s) and have notified a staff member.

- The student has written permission from their parent(s)/guardian(s) and have notified their homeroom

teacher.

Access to School Building

- The middle east (middle years) and north (elementary) doors will be opened at 8:30 a.m., however,

supervision of students does not start until 8:40 a.m.

- Once classes have started for the day, all exterior doors will be locked from the outside, except for the

temporary main entrance doors.

- In case of an emergency, students are still able to exit any of the doors in the building.

- All visitors to the school, including parents/guardians, are to report to the office; therefore, the

temporary main entrance doors will remain unlocked throughout the day until 4:00 p.m.

- Parents need to pick up all students at the office as we need to account for all students.

- Parents in the elementary are encouraged not to be knocking on the north door or sitting in the hallway

as this is a disruption to the students

-Students need to vacate the building 15 minutes after school unless arranged supervision by a

teacher or using the public library.

Student Vehicles Driving private vehicles to school is a privilege reserved for those students with a valid driver’s license. If

a student is driving to school without a valid driver’s license, we are legally required to notify the RCMP.

Parking is to be on the street. Student use of vehicles over the noon hour and during spares is

discouraged. Riding motorized vehicles (ATV’s, snow machines, etc.) on school grounds is prohibited

for the safety of others.

School Photos Individual student and class photographs are taken each year and the students may purchase them if they

wish. Preschoolers may also have photos taken at this time, but arrangements must be made with the

photographer prior to this date. This year’s date is September 30, 2016. Retakes will be October 27 @

1:00pm.

Newsletters A monthly newsletter will be sent out from the school at the start of every month. The purpose of the

newsletter is to inform the parents and community of various school activities.

Telephone Parents should contact their child(ren) by phone during the breaks if possible. A student may make local

calls with permission from their homeroom teacher.

Library The library is a quiet place in which to work and do research.

There is no food or drink allowed in the library.

All library materials must be signed out before leaving the library.

Students should make every effort to return materials by the due date. If you still need to use the books,

they may be renewed in the usual manner. Students who do not return overdue materials after repeated

notices may have their borrowing privileges revoked.

Nutritious and Healthy Foods Philosophy The school is committed to encouraging all students to eat healthy, nutritious food. The school also

encourages parents to make healthy choices easy for their children and to promote positive, nutritious

habits.

Fire Drills The school believes that fire drills are not only a legal responsibility but also a practical aspect of our

school operation to ensure the safety of staff and children. The school will instruct all students on the

proper evacuation procedures and will practice this 6 times during the school year.

School Lockdowns

In an effort to ensure that our students are safe, we will instruct all students on the proper lockdown

procedures and we will practice this process during the school year.

Lockers The principal has the right and the responsibility to carry out routine administrative searches of lockers

and other school property to ensure the safety of the student(s).

- Lockers in the hallways are available for students in grades 4-12

- Students are responsible for the cleanliness of their locker.

- Students are expected to store all books properly in their lockers.

- A student may request a gym locker and combination lock from the office at any time.

- Students will be charged replacement cost for a lock if it is lost or broken.

Parent and Student Information Regarding Bussing - Ensure arrangements are made for billeting of all rural students in town should buses not run due to

severe weather conditions. These arrangements must be made at the start of the school year, updated as

the need arises, and communicated to the school.

- Advise the driver when the student will not be using the bus service

- Be properly dressed in winter for any emergency; the bus driver has the responsibility to refuse to

transport any student, if the student does not have in their possession, while travelling on the school bus,

proper headgear, gloves, footwear, etc.

- Be on time.

- No moving from seat to seat on a school bus after seating instructions have been given by the driver.

- Refrain from yelling, shouting or whistling, as it distracts the driver's attention to horns or railroad bells.

- Communicate with the Southland dispatcher when you want other children to ride to your house

for birthdays, etc. The number for dispatch is 306-682-5715

Cold Weather Policy

Students are expected to be outside at all recesses and noon hours, weather permitting. Wind-chill

equivalent guidelines are as follows:

* down to -25 °C (students stay outside)

* -26 °C to -30 °C (altered recess)

* -31 °C and colder (indoor recess)

*Listening to CJVR 105.1 FM or CK750 will provide information on buses running and the wind chill

Student Success Room We are implementing a “Student Success Room” for those students who have not completed their daily

work. This will be in Mrs. Grays classroom daily from 12:25-12:55pm. Students are required to bring a

lunch on these days and eat prior to 12:25pm. If students do not attend this Student Success Room, there

will be follow up and further discipline. This room will not be used for those displaying inappropriate

classroom behaviours, rather it is a time for the students to use to complete their assigned work and

experience success in school. Teachers will be supervising and available to help with any questions.

acceptable, and respectful work environment. If students are deemed to be dressed inappropriately, they

may be asked to put on other clothing that they have available to them at school, or may be sent home to

change their clothing.

- Please wear shoes as bare feet are not permitted.

- Appropriate length of shorts and skirts

- Revealing shirts and tank tops (including spaghetti straps) are not acceptable.

- Shirts with questionable or offensive slogans are not acceptable.

confiscation and pickup at the office until the end of the school day.

- Winter parkas and heavy jackets should not be worn during class time.

- Students are asked to wear non-scuff shoes.

- Warm and waterproof clothing should be worn as students in Kindergarten to Grade 6 are expected to go

outside for all recesses and noon hours, except in severely inclement weather.

Harassment, Bullying and Cyber-Bullying

The school believes in the importance of providing students with a safe and secure environment.

Therefore, acts or threats of violence, intimidation, bullying, cyber-bullying or harassment on or by any

person will not be tolerated.

Definitions: Bullying or Harassment means the attempted, threatened, or actual conduct of a person that causes or is

likely to cause injury, and includes any threatening statement or behaviour that gives a person reasonable

cause to believe that he or she is at risk of injury within the school, on school property, at any school-

related activity or event and travelling to and from school. This includes any verbal or physical action

taken which threatens or results in the inflicting of physical, emotional or psychological distress or bodily

harm on a person. Also included is any behaviour that has intent or effect to alarm, annoy or belittle a

person.

Sexual harassment is any unwelcome behaviour which is sexual in nature. It can include but is not

limited to the following:

- unwanted physical contact

- unwelcome remarks or compromising invitations

- verbal abuse

- display of suggestive pictures

- leering, whistling, innuendoes, jokes or other behaviours or gestures of a sexual nature

- demands for sexual favours

Cyber-bullyingis the use of information and communication technology to bully, embarrass, threaten or

harass another. It also includes the use of information and communication technology to engage in

conduct or behaviour that is derogatory, defamatory, degrading, illegal, and/or abusive. Cyber-bullying

involves the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and

hostile behaviour by an individual or group, which is intended to harm others.

Zero tolerance means there will always be consequences for all acts of violence, intimidation, bullying,

cyber-bullying or harassment. It does not mean zero tolerance of the student who commits an act wherein

one incident automatically means expulsion. It means that judgment and common sense will be applied to

each situation and that there will be a logical consequence.

Procedures 1. Staff at all levels are expected to respond firmly, decisively, and without delay to behaviour which

causes or threatens to cause harm to others or is viewed as an act or threat of violence, intimidation,

bullying, cyber-bullying or harassment.

2. All staff members are responsible for all students and all students are responsible to all staff members

with regard to the maintenance of a safe and caring environment.

3. It is important to note that the safety and security violations most commonly revolve around students

acting against other students but can also include students acting against their teachers.

5. School expectations concerning student conduct with respect to violence, intimidation, bullying, cyber-

bullying or harassment, and the possible consequences of serious or repeated misconduct, are to be

communicated to students, parents and staff.

6. The onus is on the victim or witness to report incidents of violence, intimidation, bullying, cyber-

bullying or harassment as soon as is reasonably possible to any staff member they trust.

Student Evaluation- Guiding Principles

Communication with Students and Parents - Course Outlines and Assessment Plans

During the first week of classes, teachers will provide students and parents with age appropriate course

outlines and a description of assessment practices, including how formative assessment will be used for

descriptive feedback (coaching) and how summative assessment (evaluating) will be utilized throughout

the grading period.

Teachers will clearly indicate their intended learning outcomes at the start of each lesson to ensure their

students understand the focus of the lesson and that all learning experiences will support that outcome.

Re-demonstration

Re-demonstration of curricular outcomes at St. Brieux School is permitted when the following conditions

are applicable:

- A poor result on a summative assessment despite evidence of high achievement in prior formative and

summative assessments in the same focus area.

- If the teacher believes a poor result is due to circumstances beyond the student’s control (i.e. health,

family emergency, etc).

In situations where one or both of the above conditions exist, and the student has always maintained an

attitude that contributes to learning, a re-demonstration will be permitted. The specific requirements of

that re-demonstration will be at the discretion of the classroom teacher (i.e. tutorial and practice

requirements, parent signature, etc.).

Plagiarism Is taking someone else’s word, thoughts, or ideas and representing them as your own. Some examples of

plagiarism include:

- Using all or part of another’s speech, paper, or ideas without giving credit to the source

- Copying a passage word for word and not using quotation marks

- Students will be required to redo the assignment and may have additional consequences

Progress Reports to Parents &Reporting Periods - The Horizon School Division expects the implementation of three-way conferences among parents,

students and teachers and encourages the schools and the School Community Councils to implement such

conferences.

- Teachers will involve their K-6 students in student led conferencing to engage the learner in the

reporting process and to ensure that a high level of accountability and future planning takes place. The

purpose of such conferences is to look at examples of student learning, highlight strengths, discuss areas

requiring improvement, and set goals during the reporting period

- Teachers are expected to communicate throughout the year with parents and/or caregivers in other

formats to report student progress as well (parent nights, interviews and letters).
