All over Australia during the week of 17— 24 August, books, and Australian authors and illustrators, were celebrated. At Mater Dei our Book Week Parade was a delightful experience for our students, thanks to all the parents and carers who assisted their children with the costumes and dress-ups! The theme for this year’s Book Week, was Find Your Treasure! The students thoroughly enjoyed reading or listening to all the long and short listed books. Thank you to the staff who got into the spirit of Book Week by dressing up in their fabulous costumes! There are many wonderful opportunities at Mater Dei for students to find treasure in books. Following a beautiful Mass celebrated by Father Joe Nguyen from St Paul’s Parish, students and staff continued festivities in the playground. There was a jumping castle and petting zoo, as well as colourful face painting courtesy of Mount Carmel, for our infants students to enjoy; and cupcake decorating, tug-o-war and a Side Show Alley, organised and run by Magdalene Catholic School for our primary and secondary students. We are extremely grateful to Nick from Sydney Thunder for running a cricket activity; and to Scott Martyn from Campbelltown Golf Club and Tanya Smith from Jack Newton Junior Golf for running some fantastic golf drills. As always, we appreciate the attendance and participation of our fellow Good Samaritan Schools. A disco for students and visitors, with music played by DJ Gee Gee and DJ Daniels, was the perfect way to end the day.The St Benedict Feast day, which brings together our local and extended family and friends, was a true demonstration of the virtues of hospitality and community.

The extended Mater Dei community came together to celebrate the Feast of St Benedict on Wednesday 1 August, a stunning, sunny winter’s day. We were blessed with the presence of many guests, including Principals, staff and students from many local CEO and fellow Good Samaritan schools, and, of course, the families and carers of our students. The St Benedictine Awards were presented to members of our Mater Dei community who consistently demonstrate Benedictine Values. Year 12 student Stefan Males was awarded the Student Hospitality Award for his spirit of welcome, responsibility and reliability. He is a cheerful young man, respected by staff and students alike. The Community Award was presented to the Scarce family of Camden Hire for the ongoing, meaningful, generous support they provide to Mater Dei in so many different ways.
