REFLECTION: by Greg Sunter The first part of today’s gospel deals with the disciples’ jealousy at someone else ‘cashing in’ on Jesus’ name and authority. It is a continuation of their limited understanding about the message and ministry of Jesus. They still cling to an idea that Jesus is going to rise up in power against the forces of Rome and, in the aftermath, they are going to be sitting pretty as associates of this powerful figure. The disciples have been blinded by their dreams of glory and forgotten that the real story is that people are being cured and having demons cast out. Rather than celebrating the healing that is occurring in Jesus’ name, the disciples are jealous that it’s someone else who is getting the credit. Jesus assures them, and us, that any good work being undertaken genuinely in his name is to be welcomed. It is a reminder to us that sometimes we look down on the work of others because ‘they’re not one of us’, or ‘they’re not doing it our way’. The second portion of the gospel is one of the really challenging teachings of Jesus. Drawing on the image of the community as being a whole body, the teaching suggests that it is better to remove the part of the body/community that is causing sinfulness than have the whole body/community perish. It is a concept we are familiar with in modern medicine: sometimes it is necessary to remove diseased tissue to prevent the spread of disease. We are reminded that if we surround ourselves with negative people and negative influences, we too will become negative. If we sepa-rate ourselves from negative influences and surround ourselves with positive ones then the positive aspects of our lives will flourish.

PRAY FOR THE SICK Please keep the following people in your prayers:

Frank Humphris, Tom Lyons, Myrtle Nimmo, Winifred Trinidad, Peter Colleran, Kathleen Howell, Sr Carla, Beryl Kerman and all others who are not included in this list.

CHURCH WORKERS—SAFEGUARDING TRAINING

The Safeguarding Program has been included as a key element of the Archbishop’s Archdiocesan plan. The program’s framework includes 12 standards for creating a child safe church. Training and support for those who work with children and vulnerable adults has been identified as a vital component of the program. As a volunteer/church worker within the Archdiocese, it is paramount that you are familiar with the Safeguarding program and how it impacts on your role. The following information session on the Safeguarding program will be held on 11 October @ 5.30-7pm in St Benedict’s School Library. RSVP: 1 week prior Contact: E: [email protected] We encourage all our volunteers to attend this training session

Prayer—26th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Presence I remind myself that, as I sit here now, God is gazing on me with love and holding me in being. I pause for a moment and think of this.

Freedom Lord, too often I think I am the one in control of my life. Help me to see that I am powerless over so much. I ask for the grace to be able to hand over my life to you And experience the joy of that freedom.

Consciousness My soul longs for your presence, Lord. When I turn my thoughts to you, I find peace and contentment.

The Word of God
