Traveling through Holy Week - A journey like no other journey.

My dear friends in Christ, during this me of uncertainty and anxiety, I pray that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. Times like these highlight the need for spiritual nourishment and being in community. How can we be in community when we are under a “stay-at-home” order? We simply need to find the me to use our technology to reach out to others. We can use technology to par cipate in virtual mass, or use the many resources that are at our finger trips to pray. Being somewhat physically isolated does not mean we have to be spiritually isolated. In fact, we are in a me when we need to be spiritually connected more than ever. So, even though we will not have the opportunity to gather and join in procession, waving our palms to celebrate Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem, we need to journey along with Him as He celebrates the great feast of Passover and the difficult journey to Calvary. We must not let this virus enable us to forget what the journey through Holy Week means to our life and salva on. We must celebrate the sacrifice that Jesus made so that we might experience the libera on from sin and the new life of grace. Even though we may not be able to be in church to celebrate these special days, let us spend me reflec ng on the Word of GOD. From the waving of palm branches while shou ng “Hosanna!” to the gathering of the mob shou ng “Crucify Him!”, Palm Sunday is the beginning of a difficult journey to the cross. The first reading from Isaiah invites us to trust our Father in heaven, whatever trials we face. However, something else makes this reading appropriate for Holy Week and our current mes. We are reminded that as God’s true servants, we must be open to spiritually mee ng with our God - glad that the Lord ‘wakes us to hear, to listen like disciples’. In the second reading to the Philippians, Paul summarizes the Paschal Mystery we are about to celebrate: that Jesus ‘emp ed himself’, sharing our human condi on, even to ‘accep ng death on a cross’; and then, for our sake was raised and exalted on high so that every tongue can confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and give glory to God. As we listen to the Passion narra ve of Ma hew on Palm Sunday and that of John’s Gospel on Good Friday, we are called to ask ourselves who and where we are in the crowd. Are we the ones calling out for Jesus’ crucifixion? Have we betrayed Jesus, or even denied him like Peter? Or are we like Pilate, washing our hands of responsibility? In placing ourselves in the midst of the passion, we imitate the earliest Chris ans who reenacted the events of Jesus’ final days in a spirit of prayer and remembrance. Indeed this will be a very different Holy Week from all the others that we have celebrated in the past. But perhaps there is a message for each of us in the way we celebrate this week. I invite you to think about why we are not physically coming together under one roof. Yes, it is for our safety, it is also because we love one another and wish to bring about the end of the suffering caused by the virus. Then we need to ask – once this virus has subsided, what happens to that concern and care of each other? Do we forget, and go back to the old ways of life? Like some of our Lenten sacrifices that end a er Easter, will our concerns for each other decline post virus? As we make our individual or family journey with Christ during his final week, let us look to Him not just to admire, but also to learn the values of Jesus so that we, in the very different circumstances of our own lives, may walk in his footsteps. This is a week to pray and then decide what kind of followers of Christ we are and are going to be. If we are to be His disciples, He invites us to walk His way, to share His sufferings, to imitate His a tudes, to “empty” ourselves, to live in service of others – in short, to love others as He loves us. This is not at all a call to a life of pain and misery. Quite the contrary, it is an invita on to a life of deep freedom, peace and happiness. If it were anything else, it would not be worth considering. Blessings for a challenging but spiritually rewarding week ahead. Deacon Sonal 2

UPDATES ON CORONA VIRUS IMPACT

My dear sisters and brothers in Christ,

As our state, county and national leaders continue efforts to stem the spread of the corona virus, our Archbishop, Most Reverend José H. Gomez, has directed parishes as follows:

The public celebration of Mass has been suspended through April 19, 2020, or as otherwise extended.

All churches throughout the Archdiocese are closed to the public effective March 24, 2020, through April 19, 2020, or until further notice. We encourage you to view the Mass via livestream, which can be done by going to facebook.com/lacatholics. Links to additional Masses can be found at lacatholics.org/mass-for-the-homebound or www.st-augustine-church.org.

Other ways of observing Sunday: read the Gospels, pray with your families, join yourself to the sacrifice of the Mass by making an act of spiritual communion.

Church offices are closed to the public until further notice.

All Lenten penance services are cancelled, and all regularly sched-uled confession times are suspended. Priests may offer the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation only in danger of death or extremely extraordi-nary circumstances. No confessions are to be offered by telephone, electronic means, or by “drive-up.” The faithful have a duty to confess serious sins once a year (Code of Canon Law 989), but not in any particular season.

Unless there is an emergency, the celebration of the Sacrament of Baptism is postponed, including baptism at the Easter Vigil.

The celebration of the Sacrament of Matrimony is postponed through April 19, 2020, or until further notice.

Funerals may take place only in the form of The Rite of Committal with Final Commendation (also known as the grave service). If desired by the family, a memorial Mass may be scheduled appropriately at a later date.

All Confirmations from now until Easter have been postponed. Rescheduling will be handled at a later time.

HOLY WEEK: The Archbishop will celebrate the Chrism Mass (April 6, 2020) and the liturgies of the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday) at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. Instead of attending, priests and faithful are encouraged to view the Cathedral’s livestream of the Masses at face-book.com/lacatholics. There will be no public celebration of the Triduum Masses in the parishes.

We continue to pray for a speedy resolution of the difficulties caused by the corona virus and for the health and safety of all.

Blessings,

Fr. Chris

Bendiciones, P. Chris
