From the Office of
Liturgy and Music
Our Catholic Tradition has distin-
guished between the major holy
orders of bishop, priest and deacon,
and the four minor orders, of acolyte
(including subdeacon), exorcist, lec-
tor and porter in descending
sequence. Today, a man who
receives what were previously called
minor orders is not yet a cleric, since
today one becomes a cleric only
upon ordination to the diaconate. In
speaking of the hierarchical structure
of the Church, the Second Vatican
Council mentioned only the major
orders not minor orders. Pope Paul VI's
motu proprio of 15 August 1972
replaced the term "minor orders" with
that of "ministries.” The ministry of
“porter” meaning “door-keeper” or
“receptionist” evolved from Classical
Roman slaves whose duty it was to
guard the entrance of the house. In
Europe, particularly during the early
years of the Roman persecution, por-
ters were employed as guardians of
the church buildings and of their con-
tents. Our new parish “secretary”
Melanie Saliwanchik has chosen to
adopt the title of porter after being
inspired to do so from attending the
beatification Mass of Fr. Solanus
Casey, a Capuchin friar who exer-
cised this ministry for St. Bonaventure
Convent in Detroit.
