The Mystery of the Kingdom of God
The Church observes “Ordinary Time,” not because it has nothing better to do while awaiting the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter, but because it needs time to reflect on and be transformed by the great mysteries which define it, animate it and are the basis of its mission in and to the world. Two weeks ago, for example, we celebrated the mystery of the Most Holy Trinity, the reality of one God as a relationship of three divine persons united by an incomprehensible and overwhelming love, a relationship into which we are invited through baptism. Last week, we meditated on the great mystery of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, the outpouring of divine love into the world for our salvation, the love that nurtures and sustains us along the sometimes challenging and scary, but ultimately joyful, journey of faith. Today, we ponder the mystery of the Kingdom of God, a mystery that the late Bishop Ken Untener of Saginaw, Michigan, once wrote is not only beyond our efforts, it is even beyond our vision.
What is the Kingdom of God? Ezekiel reminds us that first and foremost this kingdom is a divine work that cannot be thwarted by sin. The great prophet was writing to an Israel whose rejection of the divine covenant God had made with it had had devastating consequences. Israel had lost its land, temple, and freedom. It was in exile in Babylon, cut off from all that it had known, loved, and taken for granted. Yet, even in Israel’s most desperate hour, brought about by its sins against God’s love, God does not forget his promise to be with his people and to establish through them, through the line of David, a Messiah, a new King whose reign of justice, mercy, faithfulness, and love will last forever. In poetic terms, Ezekiel prophesies that God will take from the crest of the cedar … a tender shoot and plant it on … the mountain heights of Israel…. This shoot shall become a majestic cedar in which birds of every kind shall find a home. God’s Kingdom will be open to every people and nation. It will bring new life and hope, comfort, and healing, to those who are burdened by sin, tormented by guilt, ignored by the indifferent, and oppressed by suffering.
Mark relates the fulfilment of Ezekiel’s prophesy in the person of Jesus Christ, the Word-of-God-Made-Flesh and the descendant of David. It is Jesus who establishes the long-awaited Kingdom of God. In the parables of the sower and the mustard seed, Jesus describes the Kingdom as something beyond human effort and vision. It is a divine work, not a human achievement. Like the farmer who sows the seed, we can cooperate with God’s work, with the establishment of his Kingdom, but we do not bring about its growth or hasten its arrival, which is known only to God. Like the mustard seed, it takes root in imperceptible and mysterious ways in those whose hearts are open to God’s Word and Spirit. The Kingdom of God begins not with cataclysmic earthquakes, violent winds, or mighty armies, but with the smallest of seeds planted in the human heart. Like the mustard seed, however, the Kingdom of God, once planted in fertile soil, grows into a mighty tree – reminiscent of the cedar in Ezekiel – which will provide shelter for all who seek it. The Kingdom of God is not the exclusive resort for a fortunate few, but the salvific home for all who embrace it.
What is our role in this Kingdom? The growth and ultimate fruition of the Kingdom is God’s work. Our role, as 2 Corinthians tells us, is to persevere in planting the seeds of faith and to grow in virtue and holiness by cooperating with God’s grace. Paul exhorts us to be courageous. We need courage in these times, when we see so much happening in our lives and in our world that can tempt us to despair and give up, that can subtly induce us to turn inward and abandon the mission that Jesus the King gave us to build up his Kingdom. Whenever we experience these temptations, we must remember Paul’s words: we walk by faith, not by sight.
Our mission is to proclaim the Kingdom of God, to sow the seeds of faith, to believe in Jesus, to know
that the mystery of the Kingdom of God, which is beyond our efforts and vision, but is nevertheless real and growing in ways that we cannot see or understand. The reality of the Kingdom of God gives us hope, a hope backed in full by the promise of Love itself, the Triune God, who gives us Himself, Body and Blood, as the pledge of that hope. For this reason, we join with the psalmist who joyfully proclaims: Lord, it is good to give thanks to you!
Blessings, Fr. Chris

DID YOU KNOW?
Avoiding sexting and building healthy relationships. When teens start dating, they often feel pressure to keep up with their peers and to explore new romantic feelings. But these feelings, combined with teenage hor-mones and decision-making capabilities, can lead to some poor choices, including sexting. Sending nude im-ages is dangerous and puts the sender and the receiver at risk. Photos can be shared instantly on cell phones and social media, and once out there, the images never go away. Talk to your teen about the consequences of sexting and the importance of building healthy relationships where partners respect boundaries and don’t ask for explicit images.
