GOSPEL MEDITATION

4th Sunday of Lent

“Do you believe in the Son of Man?” Jesus wants to motivate each one of us to see the truth. After developing a relationship with Jesus, the blind man “sees” as someone very special. The Pharisees, due to the blindness caused by their ignorance, prejudice, and need for self-preservation, still remain blind. Presuppositions, prejudices, assump-tions, and our needs can easily blind us to truth. We see what we want or need to see and not what is really there. In addition, our stubbornness continues to convince us that we are right and that our vision is perfect. Only God can complete the picture.

Look around at our world. So much of what is happening today is due to the reluc-tance of folks to allow themselves to be stretched and brought to see what is really there. Many react to what life presents to them more with the lenses of ignorance than lenses of clarity. The Gospel carries great transformative value. With it, God corrects our vision and replaces our limited sight with the fullness of his sight. God opens our eyes so that we can see that it is not about preserving what we have created but of living in the immensity and wonder of God’s kingdom.

Through a simple, loving relationship with God, we can break through the tethers of prejudice, eradicate fear, dispel the darkness of hatred and sin, discover freedom, live in peace, work for justice, be effective stewards of creation, assist the migrant and the immigrant, and safeguard our economic systems and policies so that they truly serve all of God’s children. What we see is often an artificial lie. Our truth is much bigger than what our limited sight believes it to be. Allow God to work in and through you. Do not be afraid. Be open and be humble enough to know that you need help. Many human beings are living with severe cataracts that produce sight that is at best blurred. Are you one of them?

FAQS FOR THE FAITHFUL

We are aware of the latest recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to cancel in-person events of 50 or more people for the next eight weeks to try to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The Archdiocese of Detroit con-tinues to monitor the situation and consult with healthcare experts. We will have more information for you soon on what impact this may have on Catholic Schools, the tem-porary suspension of public Masses, and other events in the Archdiocese.

Weddings and Funerals Effective today, all weddings and funerals should be limited to 50 or fewer attendees in order to most effectively maintain the “social distancing” called for by government officials and healthcare experts

Food Pantries and Blood Drives Parish food pantries may remain in operation. Please ensure that you continue to fol-low all necessary guidelines from government agencies to ensure the safety of parish staff, volunteers and those making use of the food pantry. Parishes are permitted to continue holding blood drives as a way to support the com-munity in the midst of this pandemic. Please be in contact with the Red Cross to en-sure that all proper safety and health precautions are met. The Red Cross has infor-mation about their precautions during this time.

Blessing and Distribution of Palms on Palm Sunday As a means of remaining connected with parishioners during this time, parishes are encouraged to bless palms on Palm Sunday and make them available to parishioners that day and throughout Holy Week. As Palm Sunday approaches, please contact your parish for more information about their plans for the distribution of blessed Palms.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Our Father, We seek you in so many ways and places in our life. We seek you for guidance and for comfort. But you have told us that when there is hunger, it is up to us to feed the hungry. We ask you to help us see you in oth-er Christians and humbly ask you for strength in the search for what we have in com-mon. Bless our efforts to look at all the ways we are united in faith, and grant us courage to change our hearts and minds to realize your will. We ask all this through Christ our Lord and brother, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER FOR PROTECTION IN TIME OF PANDEMIC

Archbishop William E. Lori noted in his video message for this novena: Our response to the pandemic draws on our respect as Catholics for both faith and reason. Reason dictates that we should take the health precautions recommended by medical professionals and by science. “At the same time,” the archbishop tells us, “our faith makes clear that God is our all-powerful creator and that God is more powerful than any natural force, illness or economic setback.”

Please pray a Novena of Protection. Just start today and pray this for then next nine days. O Mary, you always brighten our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the Cross, took part in Jesus’ pain while remaining steadfast in faith. O loving Mother, you know what we need, and we are confident you will provide for us as at Cana in Galilee. Intercede for us with your Son Jesus, the Divine Physician, for those who have fallen ill, for those who are vulnerable, and for those who have died. Intercede also for those charged with protecting the health and safety of others and for those who are tending to the sick and seeking a cure. Help us, O Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who took upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows, so as to lead us, through the Cross, to the glory of the Resurrection. Amen.

Under thy protection we seek refuge, O Holy Mother of God. In our needs, despise not our petitions, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen. Adapted from the prayer of Pope Francis 11036 3/20

For Lay Faithful and Parishes

At the discretion of pastors, churches may be open for private prayer so that you can approach Our Lord who is fully present in the Tabernacle. Whenever the church remains open, it is the responsibility of the pastor (or the one whom he designates) to ensure that no more than 100 people are present at one time.

Please use these prayer resources to pray for the sick, for an end to the coronavirus and, if you are unable to attend Mass, for information on Acts of Spiritual Commun-ion.

Individuals also may watch Mass from home online or on TV through services offered by EWTN, Fox 2, and the Catholic Television Network of Detroit (CTND) in English and Spanish. To find the Mass times and details, please click here.

‘My peace I give to you’: Gaining peace of heart in a time of high anxiety: Father Charles Fox offers spiritual and practical advice for Catholics during the COIVD-19 crisis.

All Faith Formation (adult and children) is to be suspended during this time as well. Parishes can make arrangements for the continuing education of children or the rest of the faithful through digital resources as best they are able.

Communal celebrations of the Sacrament of Reconciliation should be suspended during this time; individual confessions may be heard at the discretion of the priest and with the proper care taken to prevent the spread of this virus.

Please know that Archdiocese of Detroit has been, and will continue to, monitor news concerning the corona-virus. We are preparing for any potential impact on our parishes, schools and other ministries, and will follow any recommendations from local, state and federal offi-cials. We will continue to update this page with new in-formation and resources as they become available.

Characteristics of an Everyday Stewardship for Lent – Gracious

Vacations can be great times for refueling the body and renewing bonds within a family and between friends. No matter how good the vacation was, it is almost always good to get home when it is over. Sleeping in our own bed, taking a shower in our own bathroom, and resting on our own couch are some of the aspects of home we can miss while on the road. That’s why encountering truly gracious and hospitable people while we are away is so important. These people are not family, but they sure can provide for us a glimpse of home. They can be waiters at a restaurant, desk hosts at a hotel, or even Uber drivers. They enrich our lives if for only a moment, yet that moment can make all the difference.

When disciples of Jesus Christ act in a gracious manner to all those they meet, they pro-vide a glimpse of home. This home is not in a house in a particular location, but it is a home prepared for all of us for eternity. No matter how comfortable we may be in our earthly homes, it truly pales in comparison to eternity with God. In that heavenly home, there is no darkness, only light. There are no tears, only joy. There is no hate, only love.

We are ambassadors for heaven by how we offer ourselves to others. Our stewardship of hospitality allows others to see a glimpse of what God promises to us. Unless we truly step up and act in a gracious manner, will those we encounter ever know the Truth? I hate it when I am on the road and fail to meet people full of joy and welcome. At least I can look forward to coming home. What do those along the way look forward to in the next life that you can’t show them a glimpse of in this one? — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi

The Mysteries of the Rosary Have you ever wanted to explore the life of Jesus and Mary in a deeper way? Each decade highlights a sacred episode: Joyful Mysteries: Through the Annunciation (1) and Visitation (2), we get a glimpse at Mary’s joyful yes to God. She gives birth to Jesus in the Nativity (3). Mary and Jo-seph present their son at the temple (4) and bring him there again when he is a teenager (5). Luminous Mysteries: Jesus is baptized in the Jordan River (1) before Mary gives him a nudge to his first miracle at Cana (2). Jesus proclaims the Gospel (3), is transfigured on Mount Tabor (4), and institutes the Eucharist (5). The light is shining! Sorrowful Mysteries: Jesus prays in agony in Gethsemane (1), knowing his hour of suffering has come. After his betrayal and arrest, Jesus is scourged (2) and crowned with thorns (3). He carries his cross (4), and Mary stands at the foot of the cross as he is crucified (5). Glorious Mysteries: Christ is risen in glory (1)! After appearing to those he loves, he ascends into heaven (2). Jesus’ followers receive the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (3). Mary, unaffected by original sin, is assumed body and soul into heaven (4), where she is crowned queen, humble mother of Christ the King (5). LPI

Our Census Representative was in and

wanted our church and community to

know that there are still many people that

are needed to get the census done. This

census every 10 years plays a vital part in

helping our community with our share of

funding. Over $675 billon dollars in feder-

al funding is distributed to states and com-

munities each year for schools, health care

facilities, roads, transportation, recreation

centers, social services and more. More

importantly, this census decides how

many representatives should be elected

from each state. Additional information

can be found on the table leading into the

church. – Thank you.
