Congratulations! - Congratulations to Visitation Catholic School’s Leggemoz LEGO Robotics team
for an outstanding First LEGO League season. At their Qualifying Tournament in December,
Leggemoz won the Project Award for their innovative idea to make electricity from the rain water
flowing through your gutters (“Gutter Power”). At the Intel Oregon State Championship Tournament
this weekend, Leggemoz scored a school record 340 points in the Robot Game. They were also the
only team in the 2-day state competition to have their robot successfully perform the elevator balanc-
ing challenge, and they did it twice. Great job team Leggemoz
Phase II Campaign: Cultivating Arts and Athletics for Community
As announced last weekend, January 25-26, we have a private donor that has offered a $100,000
matching fund. Every dollar that you donate is matched dollar for dollar. Let's take advantage of this
generous offer to double our fundraising efforts. Currently $484,435 has already been pledged and
donated to create more opportunities for arts and athletics in our community. If you would like to
donate, please visit www.vcsknights.org.
Please join me in imploring the help and seeking the intercession of our Blessed
Mother and pray the Memorare:
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone
who fled to your protection, implored your help,
or sought your intercession was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence, I fly to you,
O Virgin of virgins, my Mother;
to you I come; before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions,
But in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen
Praised by Jesus Christ!
Brothers and Sisters,
After John the Baptist baptized Jesus on the banks of the Jordan River, Jesus began his public life of
service. Like Jesus, we are also called through our baptismal promise and to show forth the love of
God in our lives through “accompaniment” which teaches us to remove our sandals before sacred
ground of the other (c.f. Ex 3:5). Therefore, I ask you to recall your own baptism and help us share
God’s love.
As you know, we continue to face challenges in both the United States and abroad. However, our
faith in Jesus Christ and our local Catholic Church is more important now than ever. Your commit-
ment to faith remains a beacon of hope.
The Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal (ACA) focuses on our renewal of our dedication to Christ and His
Church. The ACA exclusively supports Catholic ministries in western Oregon. These ministries in-
clude Priest Support and Retirement, Pastoral Ministries, Campus Ministries, and much more.
Please prayerfully consider supporting the ministries of the local Catholic Church here in western
Oregon. Together, we will share God’s love with the world.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Alexander K. Sample
Archbishop of Portland in Oregon

Nurse’s corner
Influenza can differ from the common cold by these factions:
While the cold comes on slowly, the flu is more abrupt with fever, cough, runny nose, and muscle
aches. Although you can have more than one type of virus in your body at the same time, the most
important fact is that the flu virus will hold on much longer and may lead to a weakened immune
system and open the gate to a more serious inflammatory response or sepsis. The body’s own
immune system may begin to work against itself to cause heart and kidney destruction that may be
permanent. The purpose of this article is not to scare you but to give you tools that you may use to
prevent serious permanent damage. Of course, the flu shot every year, hand washing, avoidance of
contact are extremely important, but what more can you do if you find yourself ill with flu-like
symptoms? DO NOT GO IT ALONE! In our community there are many free resources to call on:
All doctors offices have advice nurses on hand. Call and explain your symptoms and you will be
directed carefully. If you do not have a doctor, call the nearest emergency room or walk-in clinic
and ask to speak to an advice nurse. Have these numbers and a plan on hand ahead of time. Follow
the instructions given as medical professionals are aware of the most frequent virus going around
at the time. Finally, remember....if you are below 2 years of age or above 65 years your immune
system is weaker and may make you sicker quicker!
