“Fear no one…And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul…So do not be afraid…” (Matt. 10:26-33)

Hard not to see a theme in the gospel today, wouldn’t you say? Jesus tells his disciples three times to be unafraid, to act boldly and speak plainly. We might be tempted to say: “Oh yeah, but that was a time before guns and constant violence. Today is different--we have terrorism and violence everywhere.”

But the truth is, Jesus lived during a time of Roman occupation and vicious cruelty. Those who worked with Rome, like tax collectors, were politically motivated and very ambitious at the expense of others. People got ahead by being born into wealth or learning how to scheme. Treachery was around every corner.

For that matter, Jerusalem was dangerous well before the time of Jesus. Consider this poor sound of distress: “I hear the whisperings of many: ‘Terror on every side! …All those who were my friends are on the watch for any misstep of mine.” Almost sounds like a Twitter blurb. Well, Jeremiah didn’t have a social media account. His forty-year prophetic voice dates back to 627 B.C. He was from a little village about three miles northeast of Jerusalem. He saw Jerusalem captured, destroyed, and burned. He certainly knew fear but trusted in God.

One way to understand the message of the readings this weekend is to pretend you are blind to the news of destruction. Sort of, that is. Jesus says not to fear those who can kill the body but only those who threaten the soul. How do we know who they are? Can we see them?

Karl Rahner might have been able to. He was a Jesuit Priest and theologian (1904-1984.) Pope John XXIII appointed him to be one of the theological experts at Vatican II. I think Rahner was a bit of a prophet, too, because he said: “The Christian of the future will be a mystic or he will not exist at all.” It was a strange comment at the time. How did he know we would come to a time called the Post-Christian Era?

I’m reading a stack of books that add fuel to that fire—that you almost have to be a mystic to be a devout Christian. The Pew Research Center estimates that one out of every five Americans say “none” when asked about religion, about a third do not even believe in God and 62% never pray. (Meet Generation Z: Understanding and reading the New Post-Christian World, James Emery White, 2017.)

So let me try to say this in view of the gospel. We are afraid of the wrong things. Clearly, it’s hard to not be afraid of some of uncontrolled violence that exists. But like those who saw violence in years past, such as Jeremiah, we must be steadfast in faith and not turn a blind eye to salvation.

Does this mean we have to be mystics? Maybe so. For years, I heard the phrase The Mystical Body of Christ without fully appreciating what that meant. Now I know it means to stay within the Body of Christ through the celebration of the Eucharist. This is our time to be mystics, to stand up for Christ and His Church and not see mass for what we might or might not get out of it. It’s about being in it. And staying in it.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Eucharistic Prayers at the heart of our liturgy have a long history, beginning with the extemporaneous prayers of the early Christians. The presiders gave thanks from their hearts, not from any prearranged text, over the gifts of bread and wine. When the assembly had the sense that enough was said, someone would call out “Amen!” and that was that. For the most part, the plan flowed directly from Jewish meal prayers, which always recalled God’s mighty deeds. Some other markers and signposts were added almost everywhere fairly early, like the presider’s call to attention: “Lift up your hearts!”

Scholars have provided us with translations of many early texts. These have actually helped us craft new liturgical prayers, because until the liturgical reforms of forty years ago, no one could recall any prayer but the Roman Canon, now called Eucharistic Prayer I. For hundreds of years in the West, it was our only Eucharistic Prayer, and it was only in Latin. But the history of our Eucharistic Prayers is amazingly fruitful, and models have come down to us that have yielded new insights and expressions. The old custom of improvising texts according to a master plan has not endured, but we have now rediscovered a plan of standardizing the text while allowing for a great variety. —Rev. FEAR NOT

How do people find hope in the face of suffering and death? That is the question addressed by today’s scriptures. We hear of the suffering of Jeremiah and the psalmist. We hear of the death that “reigned from Adam to Moses” (Romans 5:14). We hear of the fears of the Twelve as Jesus sends them out into the world to preach and heal.

Through all this tribulation one message rings out loud and clear—“Do not be afraid!” The God who saved Jeremiah and the psalmist and Jesus is fully present to save us through the gracious gift of Jesus Christ. We have nothing and no one to fear. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

CHANGES AT CONCORD PARISHES

Two local pastors, Father Michael Cunningham from Queen of All Saints Parish, and Father Richard Mangini from St. Bonaventure, are both retiring at the end of June. They have served their respective parishes for many years and have been a blessing to St. Agnes as well, helping with our Reconciliation Services over the years. Father Richard has also helped with many Masses, weddings and funerals at St. Agnes. You might wish to send them cards, congratulating them on their long-overdue retirements and thanking them for the service they have provided to our local community. Beginning July 1st, the Pastor of Queen of All Saints will be Father Neal Clemens. former Director of Vocations and Diocesan Scout Chaplain at the Chancery. The new Pastor of St. Bonaventure will be Father Mathew Vellankal, former pastor of Holy Spirit in Freemont. We welcome them both to Concord.

SHARE: please bring your food donations to the baskets at church. All nourishing food donations are appreciated. June’s focus is: Powdered Milk and Vegetable oil. July’s focus is: Macaroni and cheese, Rice. Your support makes the difference.
